  1. Yeah, the white snap on ones are the only type that seems suitable, and they're like hens teeth!
  2. We are NOT going to save the planet like that!!
  3. The valve has gone in one of my cheapo compression testers. Standard fitting, but obviously the regular schrader valve cores tend to have springs that are too strong for chainsaw purposes... Anybody know where I can get one?
  4. To look from a slightly different angle, I have found that saw repair/resale is the second most lucrative hobby/earner combination I've encountered. The best by a long chalk used to be guitar/amp/drum repair/resale, but there are fewer opportunities these days. Time was I'd be making £300-£500 a week for maybe 4 hours work in my spare time. Not these days though. Too much competition and ever dwindling supplies. Saw repair is fun, and it seems pretty easy to pick something up for £75, fix for £30 parts and a few hours labour and sell for £150-£200. If viewed as primarily a hobby (which it is to me), I reckon it provides pretty good returns. As a hobby though. YMMV.
  5. Not wanting to sabotage the other current PPE-related thread, should I be wearing head protection while cross-cutting on a saw-horse? I don't use any at the moment (just ballistic trousers/gaiters/gloves and eye/ear protection), and I'm not sure that I can see where the saw would contact my head...
  6. Oleo-Mac 956 is Efco 156, and Oleo 962 is Efco 162, so... I buy parts from diyspareparts ( Efco 152 Spare Parts ). Pretty much the only option online. They used to be terrible for Efco parts, but they recently changed their supplier to an Irish one (maybe same as above?) and the service is currently excellent. Hope that's of some help.
  7. My 254xp was probably my favourite, but it needed a new pot, and they cannot be had (save Chinese tat) for less than £bazillion so it went. Sniffle.
  8. Really? In that case, I suggest everybody buys one! I paid about £40 for mine, but it's probably cost me £bazillion in parts to get it running!! :laugh1 If anybody requires any assistance regarding the servicing of this saw, at this point I know it about as well it's legal to know a saw...
  9. It's a nice saw, no doubt, but I think it's probably a little old-skool to rival your beloved Dolmar in terms of being a Stihl/Husky alternative for pro users. New cost seems to be £500-£550, which is pretty rich for something very, very similar to a 254XP... That said, I love it. Mine is now 50% Oleo Mac, which I can confirm for future reference is abolutely 100% identical, save the plastic covers which need to be all Oleo or all Efco. Can't combine.
  10. It's not the most likely cause, but I think most people take them out and leave them out, so checking to see if it's at fault is simple enough!
  11. Obviously something for the Australian market...

Also! UK support is terrible compared to Stihl/Husq unless you're near a decent dealer. There is literally only one online source for spares, albeit quite a good one. Also also! Spares are rather more expensive than Stihl/Husq.

I have a Efco 156/Oleo 956 which is the current 50-something cc pro saw offering. Pro: build is ace, saw is very much like a Husky 254xp. Great for firewood. Anti: old school and heavier than equivalent modern saws. I love it (project saw) but I don't use it professionally.
  14. Awesome, thanks Spud!
  15. Also, those cheapo brake bleeders on Ebay, does anybody know if they tend to pump as well as suck (fnar fnar)?
  16. Air leak. My obsession with getting my Oleo/Efco hybrid running continues! The saw races at idle which means an air leak, right? Could there be anything else? Cylinder gasket is new. Cylinder and piston are mint, rings are new. Hoses and boots all look sound. I know the answer is a pressure/vacuum test, but I don't have access to the gear. In all likelihood, will it be the crank seals? Or is the crank case gesket just as likely?
  17. I can't imagine that the profit (even at B&Q prices) would make it worth their while covering the health and safety aspects of storage and transport. Let alone staff training. Shame, since IMO Aspen probably has the most to offer amateur/infrequent users. A better bet would be Morrisons or equivalent who already sell fuel.
  18. Tip request! Say you took the cylinder off a saw, and then realised that you you needed to remove the clutch (!!! only an idiot would do such a thing! Certainly not me!! ), is there a safe way of getting the clutch off without reinstalling the cylinder? Putting a spanner on the flywheel is a no-no I gather...
  19. For bonsai!
  20. Rich, search lsengineers (.co.uk) for "warning pictograms", and you'll find what you're after I reckon. *edit* Warning Pictogram Qs for Stihl MS241C, MS270 - 1125 967 3419 | Only £1.10 | Stihl MS270 Chainsaw Spares Here?
  21. Stihl 026 or 260 with 15 or 16 inch bar for my money. Everybody will say 346xp, but that's overkill probably...
  22. 1/2 an Efco 156 (£20) + 1/2 an Oleo Mac 956 (£30) + 2 hours = pretty ace so far! Anybody needing random 156/956 parts, I have plenty left!

Stiga saws are just yellow consumer-level Stihls aren't they?
  24. I hope you are an experienced user, because that saw is designed with the seasoned professional in mind...
  25. There are a couple of plates that allow access to the main spring, but the latching parts can only be checked when removed. You can't uncover the mechanism and use it. That would be too easy!
