  1. Happy new year! Crank seals have always caused high reving when I've encountered them, whereas this one won't rev up properly at all. I'll re-check the carb, but I'm pretty sure it's ok... I reset the air gap because the coil was a little distant, but maybe it's just a dodgy coil. Wouldn't that refuse to start completely? Stupid, boring 026/260s!
  2. I'm stuck! Compression not awesome, but 155-160, so not terrible. Carb cleaned and kit-ed. Fuel line and filter perfect. Piston/rings and cylinder are fine. Fuel is fine. Starts first pull, but won't rev up properly and won't run long enough to even begin to look at the carb (set 1 turn/1 turn). If left idling it runs down and stops. Can be kept running by feathering the throttle, but doesn't rev up properly at all. Once it's stopped, it doesn't want to start again. Sometimes will fire a couple of times. I'm stuck! And ideas?
  3. Good information, thanks! I'll get one for mine then.
  4. Well that's embarrassing! I've just realised the old '026' bar is actually from a Makita! Doh! What remains of the paint looked Stihl grey, but is actually Makita...grey. That explains it. *getting my coat*
  5. Well! That's weird! Perhaps aliens or ghosts or something. I did fix a really early 026 without an automatic/on/off oiler a while ago, maybe that had smaller mounts? Hmmm. The only Stihls (and thus Stihl bars) I've had in my workshop in the last year or so are 026/260 and an 046. Funny.
  6. Hello! Just fixing up a 260, and have various old bars from 026s around, but they don't fit! Is this normal? The bar mount is the same as an 046 (although the old 20" bar from an 046 isn't quite the ticket for a 260!).
  7. Any update on the quality/fit? I'm fixing an ms260 with a bust handle at the moment and wonder about the aftermarket ones...
  8. Yes. Short battery leads. Start car. DO NOT EVEN LOOK AT THE CAR! TURN AWAY FROM THE CAR! Depress throttle WITHOUT TOUCHING THE CAR! YOU TOUCHED THE CAR! START AGAIN!!! STUPID HUMAN!!! etc. F*ck this weekend. 2001 V40 with the Mitsubishi engine.
  9. Yet another MS260 with carb problems. And my Volvo which lost it's ECU memory after I disconnected the battery which I had completely forgotten about (must have lost my own ECU settings!). Stupid Swedish engineering; if only Stihl made estate cars!
  10. Everybody always overlooks Efco! I've fixed and used quite a few, and they're built really well and spares simple to source. The pro models (156/162) are pricey, but the farmer's saws (152/147) are good value.
  11. Ebay will ALWAYS side with the buyer. The process is almost entirely automated. 'No returns' is entirely worthless and only relates to people buying stuff and then wanting to change the size/colour/whatever, not faulty goods/badly described goods/ IMO this is absolutely on the money since there are thousands of complete tools on ebay who describe an item as having a fault (saw not idling for example), but fail to mention that the fuel tank has a gaping hole in it (for example). Don't waste your time trying to argue your case with Ebay; it isn't possible to win.
  12. Hello! Does a 036 piston/cylinder fit an 034 with no other changes? ie; is it a simple, straight swap?
  13. There are two 026 drum/sprocket versions, one for the oldest (non-adjustable) vesion and one for the adjustable version (most of them). Not that is it? From what I can remember (too cold to go to the garage yet!), the non-adjustable version is narrower/less deep, depending on your point of view!
  14. Every day is a school day!
  15. How can the same cylinder fit 350 and 346? Isn't the 350 clamshell? I would have thought you'd need some sort of conversion kit... The meteor piston is definitely worth having; they seem universally considered the finest aftermarket pistons around. Cylinders are a lottery and I doubt that a £70 is guaranteed to be better than a £35 one. That said, I've used a few and they've all been fine which is more than can be said for NON-METEOR aftermarket pistons.
  16. Doh, forgot about acresnet! 11,500. Nothing to see, move along!
  17. Hello! Just bought a super-tidy little 100 Super for peanuts, I can't help myself with these things they're just too cute! I thought I had a manual from the last one, but only IPL annoyingly. Anybody know factory carb settings and/or max rpm? I have a vague feeling 11.5k, but I'm not at all sure...
  18. Probably just one of those affectations people develop specifically so people ask about it... "...well, back when I was felling trees in the early 1940s using a customised Harley to drive a chain made out of Indian's teeth, we had to use rattlesnakes for starter ropes..." etc etc
  19. I think it tends to be aftermarket exhausts that run straight into the inside, genuine seem to have stopped/discrete holes that can be left unblocked.
  20. Awesome, thanks!
  21. Anybody (Spud in particular!) know what a safe thickness is for a home-cooked 346xp (NE) cylinder gasket for maximum squish?
  22. Thanks so much for the stickers Gardenkit!
  23. Take a torx 27 and a 4mm allen key so there's no excuse for not taking the exhaust off and seeing what the piston looks like! Compression test if possible. Roll the saw over/around while idling to check crank seals (shouldn't suddenly increase/decrease). Sorry if these are too obvious! Check if cylinders are aftermarket...
  24. Yeah, I was thinking this too.
  25. What's the best option for fixing bits of ripped/broken grip (you know, the grey/black plastic covering stuff) on front handles? Do nothing? Gaffa tape? Tear the entire thing off and go for the shiny/slippy look? Hose-pipe?
