  1. You're stretching the bounds of tolerability with the "Northern" tag.... Most things can be adjusted or allowed for, but.......
  2. I had a conversation with a trader about this at a banking / investment gig back end of last year. His view was that it's generally considered "fringe" and high risk because of the high potential for scams, the long lead from plant to maturity and the probability of global political / social / economic fluctuations during the gestation period. I recall reading some carbon trading guff from FC or Confor or something similar - and they also warned of potential scams. Do you know Chris Minty Beau? He's got some sort of rainforest salvation gig going on in Belize. Loosely speaking, it's assisting local population to counter illegal logging and finding viable uses for embargoed forest hardwood seized after catching illegal loggers. E.G. There's a guitar maker in one of the workshops at Mt E using the wood. He's based out of Mount Edgecombe so you could possibly combine a nice day out and catch up with him for a brew. It's reasonably local, charitable status and seemingly well intentioned. LinkedIn profile here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris-minty-mbe-20235819/ Or I could pass on his email / phone No. if you fancy?
  3. Any particular use in mind yet??
  4. Would it be worth lifting out big lumps like that rather that tipping??
  5. If it's Dyson, I'm in!! I'm rarely 1/2 fooled Stef!! You'd have to worry if they made 'em solar powered.... You'd have to knock off at sunset!! 😳
  6. Age can be a contributory factor, probably better defined by maturity rather than age though. A balance between the energy, enthusiasm and eagerness of yoof, against the (life) experience, responsibility and wisdom of age. Not suggesting yoof, or age, provide exclusivity of either life skill set above, but assessing the presence, or absence, of these attributes might help with the decision making.....
  7. Where have you seen this Stefan? Perhaps new units might be subject to new regs, can't see it being retro.
  8. Drop "capital gain", that's an ENTIRELY different subject and not what you seem to be asking about. It's "capital allowance" under annual investment allowance. You can write it all down in one hit against the taxable income of the year of purchase, or, write it down in percentages over consecutive years. It's not dodgy at all, it's an allowable deduction. Example: If you earned 100k and bought a van for 20k, your taxable income would be 80k if you wrote it down in the year of purchase.
  9. Start here: https://www.gov.uk/capital-allowances/annual-investment-allowance
  10. Pictures! Show us some pictures....! (for entertainment value Reg, not tale telling!!)
  11. Para 1 - on the contrary, it's not that they "...don't seem particularly strong..." They are inherently flawed, fail to properly support the elements that might be judged as needing support and disproportionately advantage those that least "need" support. It's a truly scandalous gravy train with biscuit wheels dumping staggering amounts of public money into the coffers of big business and the landed gentry yet it retains the passionate support of the (farming) masses because they can't afford to lose the crumbs that are swept aside from the tables of the privileged. An unbelievable example of suppression (with the active and enthusiastic support) of the proletariat by the bourgeoisie - and this is 2017 UK! Para 2 - economically, fairly insignificant. Not so with regards to resilience, moral and social attributes. Para 3 - Just a matter of time, change will come.
  12. I saw that a day or 2 ago on the NFU FB feed. What a quality piece of unsubstantiated propaganda - no stats, no data, no reference, just pure unadulterated propaganda intended to pump up the already grossly inflated opinion (of those within the sector) of the importance / significance of the sector. You'd be better off watching this: Or reading this: https://www.pwc.co.uk/assets/pdf/ukeo/ukeo-sectoral-employment-march-2016.pdf
  13. Great suggestions so far! But..... Summer is just around the corner, get a pair of shorts and invest the savings in booze!
  14. http://www.theecologist.org/campaigning/2988773/is_natural_england_granting_unlawful_badger_cull_licences_to_farmers_with_poor_biosecurity.html The truth will be known. The lies will all unravel.
  15. That's tomorrow's task sorted then... Magnolia sniffing!
  16. Missed a trick there Ti! That's 1000's £s of rustic furniture you're giving away!
  17. I've seen a truly magnificent Magnolia this morning. Private domestic garden as I was driving past. Will get a pic later...
  18. That was too late for me!! 💤 Good question mind, certainly politicians, perhaps not farmers (in reality, who is ever going to say "no, don't give that money to me, give it to someone more needing!", and possibly all of US, the electorate, should be voicing our opinions to the politicians.
  19. See 99 Mull. There would have been another post to follow up what I see as the inequity of this funding system but I got distracted. I did a quick search on the DEFRA webpage linked earlier for 3 local farms. Each received between 15-25k in 2015. Now since I know each of them personally I have some visibility of their general lifestyles and business status which include ownership of sunny climes villas, extensive foreign travel / holidays, extension of farming activity into hotel & tourism and more leisure activities than actual farming. I've no problem with any of that of course, work hard, play hard - fair game! But do any of those deserve 15-25k grant funding more than, say a student starting their life under the burden of considerable debt, an octogenarian having to sell their home to fund later years care, a disabled person losing DLA? If you answer yes to any of the above, it could be possible that we have inadvertently changed sides on the political divide!! I just can't reconcile how those "in the system" can, with a clear social conscience, justify it.....
