  1. A kettle and a metal cup for use on the burner while down in the woods this winter coming, brew up :-)
  2. Had one for a couple of years now as a page. Have got numerous jobs through it. I also have a widget on the main website which displays the feed into the front page, this means i can update one thing from my phone it posts it through fb to my website also, keeps it fresh. I also use pinterest, google+, youtube and linkedin too but to a lesser extent.
  3. Base costs + additional travel costs + profit + bs tax = price Base costs - fuel for machines, purchase and running costs of machines over 3 - 5 years, insurance, vehicle costs, wages, business accountancy etc - all broken down to per hour and then up to an 7/8 hour day. (Basically anything that's going to cost you money) Additional travel - outside of X area should have Y amount per mile added to cover your time, wear & tear and fuel Profit - its a dirty word but you are in business, make some money cos that's what its all about, but don't go excessive as someone will always be cheaper. BS tax - if its a shitty job, bad access, lots of effort or the client smells funny then add a bit here. If your doing a job for practically nowt then you won't want to be there doing it, add a little. Work it from the bottom up and dont be greedy, if you win every job then you are too cheap! It really only comes with experience to be on the money, we all mess up occasionally but mostly I get it bang on! Enjoy
  4. This is how i did it, ply, 2x2", screws, bolts, hinges and a couple of gas struts off a fiesta from down the scrapy... Was meant to be temporary but still going strong 6 months on
  5. Ted's on the ball with this one, yes it is very deceiving as they are higher than it looks. But yes Marc I am always mindful of what and where i am doing with the cutter at full extension!!
  6. For the most part we use our tripod ladder and the 1m extension bar. No guide for level personally as we have the eye but don't afraid to use one if it helps you. If its the first year its been cut, or first time for a while, then it will look a bit gnarly but given regular trimming it will come good again. How ever we have 6 hedges a year where we prefer one of these

    Bad dreams

Some times it does take seeing something on telly to put our lives in perspective, be it war, famine etc. I am surprised about the farming forum considering the history of depression in farming. Like many walks of life, i guess many manly farmers feel they can't sit around and discuss their feelings. I found following our break in and issues in my relationship which all landed at the same time, i wasn't in a good place. I came on here and vented which helped hugely. Best of all my good friend came down and we spent a whole evening drinking beer and putting the world to rights. It all put things into perspective, then the next day i was at work and cut me finger open on a pair of secateurs and instead of feeling got at like before, i just swore at my stupidity and stuck a plaster on it. As a tree surgeon, yes you do need to be in a good place mentally, but also its a great way to loose yourself in work when there are problems at home or in your life. Mind you I have said the same about mowing in the past, requires little thought and gives you exercise lol. Give yourself a day off some time and do something you have always wanted to do, it will give you a target to look forward to and an experience with memories afterwards. Something i go by a lot is: Work to live, not live to work.
  8. Can you not just get the chaps in the factory to fold something up for it instead?

    Bad dreams

Fears could be causing anxiety, anxiety adding to stress, stress can lead to depression My honest advice would be to go and see your GP and explain your situation. You've done extremely well to kick the booze, a very deserved well done to you. Never feel you can't come on here and talk about things, it will always help to clarify things into perspective. Do you have any hobbies to help you relax away from work etc?
  10. Very nice indeed. My other halfs father has a thing for Green Man things, I'd be interested in hearing how much one like this would cost. Pm me if you like.
  11. Is it possible it just needs a retune since its run in from your dad using it? Our 171 (small saw for by the chipper) was the same after a month or so!

    Bad dreams

I feel for you, bad dreams can affect your mornings and days so easily. Firstly, I don't suffer them very regularly but I do suffer from dreaming about waking up late pretty much every Sunday night into Monday morning. Its probably caused by being at my girlfriends house and knowing i need to get up and travel 50 miles home before the working week. My girlfriend suffers the same reoccurring nightmare of her late husband dying in front of her, unfortunately this one was real and it happened and its doubtful she will ever stop having them. Its worst / more frequent around anniversaries or birthdays etc and with Christmas around the corner... As per above, the brain is a funny ole thing, and one we don't fully understand.
  13. Yeah I've found the images have to be very good and almost concentrate on just its photographic quality rather than the subject? I know what you mean Steve, I'm not sure its particularly great for business directly given we sell a service and not a product, but it certainly has boosted our google ranking a little bit more. Think I should make more of my Google+ account which I hardly post on and feel i should?
  14. Guessing that's a no then
  15. As part of our greater social media marketing I have a profile on Pinterest. Up till recently it was a personal profile but now they have up graded it to a business for free. This last week I have had averagely 15 repins a day. http://www.pinterest.com/kentgardening/ Anyone else on there and if so how are you finding it and whats your profile name?
  16. He arranged finance for the truck too
  17. Mind you, define a palm tree? Is it a Cordyline or a Washingtonia? This wiki may help too: Arecaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  18. Great looking thing for your Zombie apocalypse survival plan...
  19. Clue is in the name At the end of the day its a single stemmed woody plant, surely that's a tree in anyone's book?
  20. I would be contacting a local Arb Consultant for a report into the possible issues resulting from its removal, plus a strategy for staged removal if heave is a possibility. Get it all in writing. With regards to accessing the property i am with the previous reply of walking around the land with the land owner and ask if there are any targets they are concerned about (a shrub might be from great aunt Rosie's garden and if you destroy it they may kick up stink) I have been in the same situation with a tree between neighbours, you just need to distance yourself from the argument between them and get the neighbour onboard with the fact you are there to do a JOB and cure the issue not anything else. The neighbour ended up offering us his back driveway for an LZ and processing area for the job. Offer the neighbour some logs or wood chip - simple things go a long way. Be very specific with your quotation wording, cover yourself in the quote carefully
  21. +1 for Ian bridges - mobile - 07966 114191
  22. Cheers Tom Here's a few pictures of the machine in action too. James
  23. I've had similar issues in the past and cured it with a good calm chat and teaching the person to sharpen a saw properly. Since then he is superb If they still don't get it, give them a silky.
  24. Paul gets my vote Looks an easy straight forward job but it can be daunting to someone who hasn't dismantled something this big before.
  25. I know what you mean but I guess it depends on your climbing ability and the job spec. Do keep in mind that most of this video footage over the roadside bit was purely for the video
