  1. On this occasion, 3 years ago, we didn't win the job. Back then I had no chipper and no arb wagon. I was playing at being a tree surgeon and this and one other job made me realise that you need to spend money on kit and infrastructure to win the jobs. Of course, having learnt a lot and spent a lot on kit, and with experience, we now win around 80% of our quoted tree work.
  2. It's always good to look back at your old quotes and threads on here with the added benefit of hindsight and experience. Lots has happened since these early days, we now have a green mech chipper and transit arb truck. I feel I have learnt masses, experienced lots (never everything) and now would look at this job with different eyes. I can see if we quoted for this again that it would be no more than 2 days, perhaps with an additional half day to shift the timber. What's to learn here for newbies? Well don't be daunted by conifers, however always be realistic and double what you think will come away from the job. Price it adequately but not to extremes and always take the first one as a learning experience. To many new climbers they will see this as hard work but once you get to know the flow of conifer removals they certainly come easier and easier, and then become bread and butter work!
  3. Quick update The saw is still sitting on a shelf needing a new fuel breather plug as the one supplied by a local dealer turned out to be too small. Looking forward to getting in the workshop and getting the saw back on the circuit for work!
  4. It will pay off eventually. However the best route to market i have found is actually going to talk to the store managers of stores like halfords, b&q etc and finding out who is responsible for the management of the landscape. With industrial estates they are very often built for trust fund investment and there will be one company which manages the estate for the owner, it is that company that you want to find out and contact directly. The best way is if they find you, like this current contract did through our website Best of luck
  5. Its not exactly Folkestone but there is TW Services up near Richborough (towards ramsgate) Waste Services & Management | TW Services, Kent | Online Skip Booking
  6. There's certainly good regular money to be made from grounds maintenance. My company started out doing gardening and then I qualified as a tree surgeon and for a while that took the lead. Recently we have balanced out and now offer grounds maintenance to larger clients such as industrial estates, pub restaurants and to schools and supermarkets. Whilst this is still a developing area for us, we are about to sign on a contact worth £27k a year for a very large multinational company. This for the most part is regular grass and vegetation management but there are 120 trees on sitein the car parks requiring remedial works. There is certainly money in it but be very sure to have a proper agreed specification for the work BEFORE signing contracts for the year.
  7. The Stein Super Plasma fits my 12 yr old very well indeed, he was 10 when he first started wearing it too. Stein Super Plasma PL climbing helmet assembly, MSA Sordin ears / mesh visor | F R Jones and Son
  8. If using blue water pipe its worth remembering that the 20mm fits inside the 25mm snug enough to join them for the application here.
  9. Sod the chipper, the car behind it doesn't look too clever either
  10. I had a heron sit on top of the pergola the other day but since the 1 inch thick polycarbonate covers are on, its pondering was somewhat pointless
  11. "If you can't see the wood for the trees, you can't see the whole situation clearly because you're looking too closely at small details, or because you're too closely involved." For climbing kits I take the examination of kit very seriously, it is my life on the line. I inspect the kit as it comes out the bag and when it goes back in again. Once weekly and again once monthly. However during daily use of the same equipment it is possible to become blinkered and this is when the TE by an independent person is particularly key and useful.
  12. Well I'm late into this thread but can offer a fair bit of advice to anyone needing it as I used to be a koi dealer and import fish direct from the breeders in japan and build very large lush koi ponds This time of the year, in an unheated pond, avoid being too quick to feed the fish until the temps are actually stable and the filter bacteria have compensated for being few in number over the winter period. I'll add some pics here of my own 6000 gallon heated pond which runs two ultra sieves two pods and a double bakki shower. In the pics is a pic of the 4 x 3ft viewing window in which are 10 Chagoi but i have recently sold 8 of the lesser ones back to a koi dealer friend.
  13. Nice job that. I've never used a VSL before but really should give it a go since we have the kit to do it!
  14. Yep i'd agree the rotor speed / engine speed / flywheel rpm would be the performance maker. If the no stress is kicking in then the new engine must be too under powered or its labouring more than it should. It may sound silly but is there any way to adjust the throttle up further on the new engine? My brother highlighted to me that the 23hp briggs engine is the same found on many ride on mowers and they run around 500 - 2000 rpm higher (depending on the model) than the chipper is at the moment! Are the blades nicely sharp and have you tried it with newly sharpened blades to see if that makes any difference??
  15. Nice work that. I agree with above that most clients would want to see more cut off. I have a few who i could get that past but most prefer to see their willows pollarded.
  16. Its been nice and sunny all week, makes a change i tell you! Nothing much changes around here, except the work load keeps heading up which is great Yes Mark i have, if you click through to my youtube there are a couple of videos on there of when we first got it which might be helpful for comparison? I keep meaning to do more of it running and also another one for its maintenance but its finding the time! Will try and get one done soon and try / show differing rpm's within the sensor range for comparison?
  17. I did one at the weekend which was dead tree so ticked that box and it didnt ask for a tree survey just a covering letter of arb knowledge to back up why the tree was triple D. As above go through it and check which boxes you have ticked. It didnt ask for a survey on my one, but i did do sketch plan, 3 pics and a letter.
  18. Cheers fella, been a bit of a slog this week. Now re-pointing the old granite sett pathway, i'd rather be doing tree work but its for a good customer
  19. We're in Sissinghurst mate, so right in that very area small world eh
