  1. Why store as rings rather than split when green?
  2. Free trade. A global market for goods so there bought from the cheapest supplier. If you tried to limit this to support a national industry with, say import tariffs restrictions etc it would be called a trade war or protectionism. I still think complete free trade in all resources is abit bonkers though I agree, especially for important strategic resources stuff like oil & gas (energy) maybe even food that gets sold to the highest bidder. This is why i think fracking all over UK won't mean cheaper gas coz they are private companies they will sell to the highest global bidder which might mean china etc not impacting UK prices much. Some resources like gas should be held in reserve imo by the goverment, & only tapped when or if global prices go beserk imo. Recent it was the news UK was only one tanker away of ruining down to empty. Would of beign interesting to see what would of happened if the tanker didn't arrive just in time. UK gas supply pressure eased with arrival of tanker from Qatar | Environment | The Guardian Sorry gone off on a bit of a rant
  3. Home made retort from oil drums: Methode of making charcoal kiln As for charcoal you buy in shops could be any wood as comes from all over the world often causes deforestation of third world countries etc. Somalia is a large charocal exporter for example: Deforestation and Charcoal Export SATG | Somali Agricultural Technical Group
  4. Onlt seen the 45 gallon drum method done, & it produced about half the orginal volume of the drum if the burn was a good one. Fire was made on ground on drum lid then the drum packed solid with split wood was tipped up on top of fire and proped with a few old tiles to make air gap round bottom Drum also had one hand sized hole at bottom (on top when the drum was tipped up). Closed down with mud when smoke stopped being white (could also view charcoal inside by looking down the top hole) Top hole was blocked with slate. To little time/oxygen you get "brown ends" unburnt wood, too long you get not much charcoal left, just ashes A retort (external fire) is more effiecient that a traditional charcoal kiln i think. Also insulating the kiln can increase its efficency Best wood to use is seasoned hardwood espacially alder, but apparently any wood can work including green wood.
  5. All thoose long planks in second & third pics would cost loads to buy at the builders merchant how come they are unwanted offcuts?
  6. Thread i posted about them before, some info etc: http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/chainsaws/45881-active-brand-chainsaws.html
  7. On the italian version of arbtalk they seem to rate active 39.39 evolution over any other brand as the best top handle apart from stihl Google Always going on about it.
  8. Think the Silky GENKI Temagari might be what you need if you want to start lopping massive stuff?
  9. Thoose 4 wheel flat bed trolleys look no good for slopes & mud/rough ground though?! Whats wrong with stein type design two wheeler? Always wanted to someone to design & build a modern version of the chinese wheel barrow out of light weight steel tubing etc with that would hold a builders bag in a framework on top above the central wheel etc....
  10. Has anyone bought/tried this one yet? Fletcher Stewart Looks kind of retro. Review: http://www.trescue.com/uploadfiles/tr43_galletf2.pdf
  11. Looked like a silky saw kid was using... Farmer saying he burned around 20 tonnes a year on log boiler so thats like 40 cubic metres All wood produced they said was 50% for him & 50% for the volunteer wood craft peoples managing his woods seemed a good thing for him
  12. Confusion can happen if you are a time travelling wizard. time travel paradox
  13. Probaby alot less machiavellian than that. More likely his choices are try and get a few quid from doing work for free, or sit @ home and do nothing, as there isn't much proper paying work anywhere around.
  14. Vid of it [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzMI_n8gDjI]Seghetto pneumatico Sbaraglia - YouTube[/ame] Seems it used on olives etc Sbaraglia S.r.l. Compressors producer
  15. How much deck space is needed roughly for an artic load to be off loaded over a hedge & the cord stacked up? A strip say 3m wide & 12m long or something? Am thinking of felling some trees to create the the room for it but like the trees so wanna keep as many as possible...
  16. Saw Pruner Chain Saw Pneumatic system outperforms - ACCESSORIES - CHAINSAWS - Online Shop - DA.MI MAIER S.R.L. "L'agricoltura a domicilio" Interesting idea?
  17. For hedge laying don't you want a light small saw around 40cc or smaller?
  18. Good customer feedback also. What profit margin do you reckon if there even is one after his costs?
  19. Surely recycling is a good thing in a way though as its clearing up the place? Suppose it depends on your viewpoint .... Must of being alot more relaxed enviromental regs then as you wouldn't get away with leaving stuff or dumping @ sea etc now or maybe you still would I dunno?
  20. More heat from them if they were seasoned... I think ash needs well over 6 months to season right 20% is a good place to aim for.
  21. Where is that sold at that price? Can't find it any cheaper than £11.99 for 5 litres OILS And LUBRICANT - Accessories/Lubricants Buy UK Barrel works out cheaper on this site..
  22. If the habitat they are aiming to recreate is the species diversity of a managed woodland rather than just leaving totally alone at least harvest some of the wood otherwise it is just seems crazy doing it imo. There may be people living in fuel poverty probably only miles from were stuff like this going on.... Could the money not be spent better to benefit both the local community as well as the wildlife?
  23. Theese are the best quality & looking ones iv'e seen for sale online but are pricey Log store, wood store and firewood delivery I copied this B1 design & added a tarp on front that can be let down when its very wet. Mine doesn't look so pretty as that one though as from scrap wood decking. Roof sloping up & front is better imo for using full space in store. They use untreated wood so are more eco...
  24. Have a old R150s bough from new husky mower for home use, & its pretty poor quality imo. Deck has coroded all the way through at the back on top so some grass flies out, the orange paint on deck mostly fell off it within a few months if i remember right, handles snapped off had to bodge a mend, self drive has gone. "Mulch plug" thing doesn't work unless grass is very very short. B & S engine not very good. Quite good & picking up wet grass though, & its still going after yrs of abuse
  25. Stoves, wood burning stoves, woodburning stove, multifuel stoves UK, Greymetal Multifuel and Woodburning Stoves Greymetal Multifuel and Woodburning Stoves This one looks good value? But no info on actual manufacturer so maybe abit dodge?
