1. Hi Always worth checking Crucial for memory updates uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/ N
  2. Hi Direct wired connection generally provides best transmission but thats just locally, I suspect your old router did not support 802.11n the n providing wireless connection speeds up to 600Mbits/s over the 5GHz band, If you change your router its handy to get a 'dual band' one that supports 802.11 bg as not all devices work on 5GHz yet. BTW POE wireless extenders are extremely 'noisy' devices, but then you may not be able to access with a cable. Theres a little program called iStumbler you can use to check your wireless signal strength. N
  3. Hi TT is not bad at all, I connected a client once at over 5.8Km from the exchange (BT declined to connect) I used a DG834 which I tweaked a bit but he said connection was better than office 2Km from exchange. N
  4. Hi all, Not bad for rural France N
  5. Hi Dean, Cut the credit terms of the bad payers & those who consistently fail to pay on time, move to pro-forma account demanding payment in advance. A well worded polite letter advising of late payment & outlining intentions usually helps N
  6. Hi, Very difficult if you have to work outside, drink loads of water & work steadily, Here our shutters help a lot as its often well over 35, shut down in the morning keeps the heat out, right now 19.40 & a smidge under 37 degrees but inside nice & cool. N
  7. Hi Jon, Already over 25 at 09.00 & probably over 37 today, heres a pic taken this morning. Did I hear heatwave in UK as it goes over 30? wheres my coat! N
  8. Hi Jon Well into thirties here maybe 34 degrees, cools off to about 18-20 at night, increasing tomorrow: 35-36 maybe. Thankfully we dont often get the humidity here. N
  9. Hi sounds like you're having fun then, just for info theres quite a few Frenchies cheering for Germany as well GOAL! Allez les Allemandes! N
  10. Hi all, Difficult one, the Argies seem to counter well on the break, but Germany more structured, but may end up with 10 men. I think it may be Germany but who knows? N
  11. Hi Ive owned a few diesels but not a new one, I would: 1. take it steady during warm up period, but this is common sense to allow everything to expand to operating temperatures and avoid wear from cold oil. I do this with any engine new or old. 2. avoid driving too hard for a few thousand miles to allow everything to bed in 3. initially, avoid long runs at high revs & try and vary the revs if you do a long journey 4. do the first oil change ahead of schedule if possible. Pay attention to cam-belt change intervals as its a big bill if they break! Dont forget to allow your turbo to run down if you have been travelling at high speed if you turn off the engine it may still be spinning and get starved of oil (applies to old or new ) Its easy for a dealer to say drive it like you stole it because they dont pay the bills. I have 220K on Land Rover & our other diesel our son drives has 195K miles, my other diesels all went well into 150K & more. Just my thoughts N
  12. Hi, I rather like Pommeau, we make Pineau from Eau de Vie, white wine and Mirabelles leave in the bon bon for a month then bottle although our neighbour has a chestnut barrel for maturing which makes for a nice flavour. N
  13. Hi I remember it well, spent a fair bit of time fixing the church roof as a number of slates were removed N

Hi Doobin

Hi,

I've noticed that a clutter free desktop helps, I read a few years ago about it but cant recall exactly why. It also assists re-start time but TBH I dont often reboot my MacBook, I just shut the lid as it starts near instantly from sleep.

Some things that may impact performance:

Too many programs start on start-up

large number of e-mails in mailbox, some people hoard them all!

large number of browser add ons if you use Firefox

lots of smart playlists in iTunes

HDD nearly full,

To improve speed:

flushing caches with Onyx - about once a year Download OnyX for Mac - Maintenance and optimization tool. MacUpdate.com

More memory I got 16Gb from Crucial, my MBP dosnt officially support it but it goes like a train.

Fit larger capacity HDD or SSD if affordable = M550 or Samsung 840Pro good ones

I have de-fragged my Macs but, TBH its marginal, I suspect improvement is proportional to the amount of data on the disk

  15. Hi So very sorry to hear this, sincere condolences. But in this moment of pain, Arbtalkers by your side. N
  16. Hi The Powerbook G4 was a very good laptop & the rather slimline OS of the day made it fly. However your MBP should be quite a bit quicker, avoid folders on the desktop as it has to index all the files just use shortcuts/aliases instead & perhaps download Onyx & do some cache clearing. If you havnt already maxed the ram then I'd consider an SSD Crucial M550 is quite a good one. N
  17. Hi Same here, too many living in 'expat enclaves', although we're fairly well integrated now. Agreed, always good to see what the French are buying, or look for medal winning ones - there are a few web sites that discuss vintage years & a good vintage will be better & also improve after a few years. You're certainly doing something right if they give you good wine, well done! N
  18. Hi, Yes, I do consider ourselves very fortunate, were south of the Loire & about 2 hrs from Bordeaux. The cheap everyday drinkable vin de table is about 1.50 a litre, but now & again we try & find something really good & of exceptional value as our local caves are very good. Perhaps this thread may convince a few that France is still worth a visit & despite what some people think, the French particularly Vendeans are very friendly. & should any Arbtalkers holiday in the Vendee, you'll be welcome for a visit a nos cave for a glass or two. N
  19. Not sure, I think you have to search via t'internet but regret prices may be a little more in UK N
  20. Hi, I have for many years followed the Medoc, Loire, Burgundy & Southern Rhone. The great wines are expensive, however next to every grande Chateau in France, lies a clutch of smaller domains making wine that punches well above its weight or a chap who has a few lines of the same vines, a pressoir & makes it in his shed. Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol for example, so we try & discover a bargain, 'nearly as good as' or re-discover old friends, which I will post here. Last week it was Lirac from the southern Rhone, Lirac is a village & appellation just 15Km from Chateauneuf de Pape & for 9 euros we had a bottle of beautifully elegant Rhone half the price of the Chateauneuf - so bought two more bottles. Vacqueyras & Gigondas are similar. This weeks bottle was Sancerre from the Loire, its Domaine Auchere from Jean Jaques Auchere, absolutely beautiful and a bit less then Pouilly Fumé. His brother makes an almost identical wine from the same vines but cant call it Sancerre as its outside the appellation region - thats probably next weeks. Enjoy N
  21. Hi, You seem to mis-understand. Apple is not vulnerable & never will be, to x86 viruses of which there are about 250,000. All computers are vulnerable to attack, to defend adequately takes knowledge of the OS & possible attack vectors. As Sophos AV is offered free to Mac users, it seems silly not to deploy it. For me Apple is much cheaper through life, even though I was getting MS software very cheap via my business, to me it was a cost when you have to stop working & 'upgrade' your computer to discover software you relied on no longer worked. Its just like a saw that keeps going wrong & spare parts wont fit. MS became a leg iron & Linux or Mac offered a much clearer way forward. Clearly you have your opinion, thats fine - enjoy your PC, but I dare say my 2006 Mac Pro will still be running long after yours are landfill. N
  22. Hi Eggs, They should have clipped their wings or built a taller fence N
  23. Hi, Been Mac based since about 2006, as an IT professional with about 30 years experience I would run a mile from Microsoft (anything) because its got over complex & seems full of vulnerabilities. Theres a lot more to security than 'dont visit any dodgy web sites' & even the best anti virus can sometimes fail to provide protection. Its rather good that Sophos provide its AV free to Mac users, this may include iPad. Computer security comes in layers, so consider limiting scripts in your web browser & monitoring outgoing traffic as well. The software to read & write to Excel & word format is either free via Open Office or the very reasonable Numbers & Pages works well. You may find that through life, Mac is actually cheaper - I could have easily gone through three PC laptops in the time Ive owned mine. N

Hi, If you cant shoot the fox... Dig a trench for the wire & fold it outwards so if the fox trys to dig under, it will hit the buried wire. If you cant do total enclosure have the wire hanging out a bit at the top of the post & a bit loose it makes it harder to climb. Thankfully dont get very many foxes, only seen two alive all my time here, but we keep them shut in at night. N
  25. Hi Thanks for posting, Im surprised the council didnt check quals or inform Network Rail, considering the severity of the incident it could have been a lot worse. N
