  1. just answered my own question, we are both right, the cheaper ones are for the old 0-90degree heads! Not sure which one the OP has,I should have asked first.
  2. Not sure what one you are referring to. I assumed Kombi tool KM-HL 0-135deg. machine part no 4230 740 5000 Just checked on media-cat, what am I getting wrong?
  3. The problem with these machines is that they dont get greased enough and the bearings fail as well as the gears. Usually by this time the con rods have gone as well. I suspect you need a pinion set 4230 640 7305 at £156.87 plus vat. Its a pig to fit, and quite frankly not worth doing, better get a new complete head.
  4. I would have thought that most amateur users would assume that its a Stihl, even without the name on it, that is until they have bought it and it arrives. Many may still not be sure even then as they dont know the saws as we do. The crunch comes for most of these nieve purchasers when they come to use it and it does not start, or bogs down. They then come to us, the dealer trade and we have to break the bad news to them that they have bought a dud. I, for one, wont contemplate a repair on such a machine. For a start, there is no spares backup, and secondly, once we have touched it and got it going properly (possibly) we take on future responsibilty. The next time it broke down they would be in saying "you just mended this and its gone wrong again, I,m not impressed with you" I can live without that hastle, but it is a shame that people are so easily duped.

  6. Its obvious from this thread that no two businesses are the same, and that different business models, suit different people. This is OK. It also comes across that there are are 3 main types of businesses / owners 1) the guys who see an opportunity to improve things and go for it. This is good. 2) those who have a good business, low stress, good earnings, and are quite happy where they are. This is also good. 3) those who bring in the negatives, " I cant get this much" "there is too much competition" etc etc. They want more but dont try hard enough to get it. This is BAD. These guys should listen to 1 and 2, and up their game. They can do it if they try.
  7. I agree that pub gas is much easier and cheaper to obtain. But the welding is nowhere near so good as when using an argon/co2 mix, especially on thin steel.
  8. Knew a chap who said he found God.
  9. Rental of bottles works out real expensive. I have found a company who charge a deposit of £30 on a bottle, a £48 'right of use ' for 3 yrs, and £28 per refill. Its a smallish bottle, about 3ft high, can't remember the litres. Its called 'garage gas' and is an argon/co2 mix I dont do a lot of welding, only smallish jobs 2 or 3 times a week, Ive had this bottle 14 months and its still got plenty left. If you are using gas quickly, you are either doing a hell of a lot of welding, or more commonly have the regulator much to high.
  10. Just like Sam, I have no idea what to say, except that I hope there is some action that can still be taken to avert this terrible thing, both your friend and his family, and for you.
  11. On the side. We used to sit in the car up by Penn Hill mast and talk to welsh breakers as well as Salisbury Plain, Exmoor and Dartmoor.
  12. Me and the seatcover used the old cb a lot in the 80's, till the anklebiters came along. Did a lot of DXing from the homebase with a big Dipole. Handles were Overdrive and Cinderella. ' nostalgia...., best forgotten'

Probably best. Take it back to the people that serviced it in the first instance. They should be keen to get it right, at least, they deserve a chance. I agree with Jamie that it should not have needed a bar at 3hours. Something a bit strange here.
  14. I agree that we should not have a vigilante attidude and would support the old saying that everbody is innocent until proven guilty....but Computers...and young girls. This sounds very suspicious and its a good job he has been reported. If by any chance he has been ' grooming' these girls it may not be too late to save serious damage being done to young lives.
  15. Brilliant, incidentally, Aspen 4 stroke fuel at £17.40 per 5 litres is much cheaper than Coleman fuel and burns exactly the same. Many campers use it. Another, rather weird use. is that these fire-eater, sword swallowing type people use it as its better for their health!

If it really has only done 3hrs in 13 years and has been serviced (properly) then there should be no physical engine problems. The problem is almost certainly due to extended storage with stale fuel in place which could manifest itself in perished fuel lines and or carb diaphragms as well as coating the insides of the carb with a 'varnish' However, if it really has been serviced annually then this should have been attended to at the last service so fuel should be no more than a year old. This is still plenty old enough to cause problems as 30 days is the maximum recommended storage period. I would suggest in the first instance trying fresh fuel, but if this does not sort it, a carb clean and re-kit, folowed by carefull tuning should hopefully put it right.
  17. In the early 80's I found an old unburnt incendiary bomb on a shelf by the welder in a workshop on a farm. Was not sure what to do with it so dropped into local copshop on way home and said casually " I,ve got a bomb" Probably was not the best thing to say in those days of bomb scares, needless to say I was there a little longer than planned!

The main reasons for carbon build up, often with sticking rings, is the use of stale fuel, incorrect ratio of oil mix, or poor quality oil. (or all three) As the other guys say, clean it up and whack on some new rings, or better still, while its down stick in a piston as Spud says. Probably best to forget grand ideas of porting this saw though.
  19. Carbon monoxide levels in Aspen fumes are around 80% of 'pump petrol' and aromatic hydrocarbons are only 10%. Visit the Aspen link to the right of this page and look at 'clean facts' for more detail. I have been supplying customers for about 4 months and the feedback is incredible, the main bonus for commercial users being the tremendous reduction in fumes. If you notice the effects of exhaust gases from pump petrol, this stuff is well worth a try. Most people, once they have tried it will not go back to pump petrol.
  20. Or follow the Swedish folk and use Alkylate Fuel?
  21. So, I think we have established that its not a legal requirement to see a CS39 for me to sell a Top Handle, but, like it or not, it is established as the industry norm so that neither the dealer or manufacturer are exposed to litigation from selling unwittingly to an untrained operator. I have spoken to several fellow dealers today, both large and small who know or think they know, just as I did that an NPTC certificate is required, but none were able to tell me which one, so I am grateful to this forum as I am now wiser. But I am unsure of a couple of things which you CS holders will doubtless be able to clear up for me. firstly, do these certificates expire? So do I have to check dates? What do I look for? Thanks. Secondly, if they dont expire, is there an earlier version of the CS39 and how do I recognise it?
