This is a good call , tank pulling a vacuum maybe ? Another possibility is low compression . Runs till it gets warm , clearances open up , compression drops of to the extent it wont combust ......

I think what Tom meant was the original cast bearings were greased adequately there fore it was not down to lack of grease . I could be wrong though ......

You say they ( the owner/customer ) want it to look like a natural wood but that is never going to happen if its a soft wood matrix . It will never look like a broad leaf random natural wood . Just a thought .

I have heard a few BRM V16 engines and I don't think I have ever heard one running on all 16 !

As he stated he left a large hinge ad a small gob . . I would have mad a bigger gob , bored the hinge and left holding wood at the back and cut down to leave a dogs tooth kicker . Easy to say from my key board but ......
