  1. A lot of the problem is that where most of the big softwood forests are in the UK are in remote regions, where there is little else work going on, farm workers pay is about £10 hour so if a cutter is on say £ 15 -18 hour that is deemed to be on big money, so the cutter excepts the the rates given above as what alternative has he got. Thus ensures a vicious circle.
  2. Running the saw is only a part of it, what about national insurance, vehicle costs, accountant, etc...more like £40 day.
  3. Thats a bit much jon 1k a day i'd say, dont forget haulagerates have fell back due to lower diesel rates.
  4. Its up to the haulier to arrange his own back load to wherever the load is destined to go.they usually work off about £700 day.
  5. Hi chap...i suspect the haulage would kill the profit on the job for you. £65 pound an hour or thereabouts jon. See if the haulier can arrange a back load to get the cost down.
  6. Yes a mistake has been made by the contractors, but seriously should this be even making the news, typical of people today after compesation,. whats happened to good old shrugging the shoulders and the like.....and trespassing. ..give me break.
  7. Very funny.... thats my sort of humour. Reminds me of George Orwell's 1984.
  8. I thought you would never ask. where and when is it Mark?
  9. Yeah leah let him pay geoff, apparently he has got loads of dosh... so much he doesn't know what to do with it...cigar anyone!!!
  10. No i haven't geoff, it was cancelled and no date set yet for the op. But my shoulder is better but not right, shoulder only hurts on certain angles like reaching behind my back etc, but it is better than it was, i am on two minds whether to have the op or not hoping it will right itself but perhaps thats wishfull thinking. Good to hear your recovery is golng well.
  11. Thats excellent Geoff..how long has it taken to get back to work after the op?
  12. Not only do you know your stuff Spud, but you explain things so clearly.
  13. If you can get a new casing for £45, i'd go with that and think no more about it.
  14. Mrhhh, nasty,......in this situation if the warranty is void i'd be looking to get a second hand casing, shouldn't cost that much... or build up the casing with liquid metal etc, if it can be done, .. dont give up on the saw just because a hole has appeared. . Good luck.
  15. You surely have an idea who has done it. There isn't that many timber contractors in the west county, or is there... sorry to hear..
  16. Fair play to Hammond, took a bit of doing that.
  17. Huskvarna 266, used to be a popular in the 80's. 66cc.
  18. Top gear this evening are in my neck of the woods, driving a Land rover defender straight up the front of the Claerwen resovoir, i remember Landrover filming the Defender climbing up the front of the Clywedog resovoir for a TV advert back in 80'S ... Should be good.
  19. Well there isnt much cost on this particular job with me on the saw, and four of them dragging brash using the excuse that they have like to do that sort of thing, but the truth is that they will drag the brash to keep the cost down.
  20. If i quoted £600 for doing that work i would be just laughed at, the farmer who owns the trees would do the job themselves by getting the Merlo telescopic handler with his mate standing in bucket hacking away at the trees with others clearing up the the fallen sticks on the road. I am gobsmacked at the some of the rates being quoted on Arbtalk...i have a 5-6 ton big spruce to fell and clear to do soon, to which i quoated £275 for, the looks on their faces implied i am a rip off merchant. People here in wales wether local or incomers dont like to part with their money and to help bring down the cost will get their whole family etc to help drag the brash and clear up. ..funny old world.. cheers.
  21. Took the words out of my mouth.
  22. Interesting Spud, thats about 8% average per annum, can i asked you what promted the surge in the last two years, are you in individual shares or funds, cheers.
  23. Haven't you lot realised yet that all this arguing gets you know where.
  24. some kind of funnel is in order then !!!
