  1. These were a conversion for highleading trees off steep ground in the 50's and 60's, hence the tower over the drivers seat to give height as winching the trees in so as not to get stuck on stumps etc, the winch was situated inthe front of the tractor, the same principal was on the grey fergie too,
  2. If you want to see someone really misersble switch on channel 5 now, Scrooge, i think hes a great bloke, lets just say he's quite price conscious !!!
  3. Another programme that gets up my goat is escape to the country, bringing city folk to the country, to which they are toally unsuited pricing out the locals at the same time.
  4. A lovely spring morning, with the crash of a two ton sitka spruce hitting the deck,, ££££. Good question though.
  5. Yes i know exactly what you mean, the doctor told me to pack the job in, but i like it too much and its all i know, all though in this weather i seriously question it.
  6. Well at the age of forty after 24 years of being a forestry contractor, felling and winching and cutting up, i was a bit of a wreck, worn out, my vertibraes in my spine kept popping out putting pressure on my pelvis which in turn put strain on my hips, to which i didn't want to carry on anymore, after taking time out to let the body 'heal' i felt much better again, gained weight to what i should be weighing for my height, after taking a year out i could just about beat my 15 year old son in a 100 metre sprint and hes a fit lad, Forestry is relentless, working on steep banks day in day out in all weathers is tough, especially in a piece work driven industry,
  7. There is only one specie that will thrive and grow well in the upland bogs of the U K and thats spruce,
  8. you must have too much time on your hands and not enough to do to think up things like this to subsidise what is effect a government obligation. if you to donate to charity, do it and dont tell anyone about it.
  9. Selling timber to sawmills in commercial forestry is usually 90 days after the lorry drops it off for them, plus the timber can be hanging about on roadside for 2 months before the lorry picks it up, so thats 120 days, so for me to see people panicking here after a couple of weeks is a bit of an eye opener to put it mildly. Granted i know i will be paid for sure whereas you are dealing with joe blogs, but still i see people here worrying for the sake of it.
  10. I know what you mean, i've been there myself, puting 2 sets of chains will give you about 30% more traction, if you do get chains dont put them on too tight as this will give you more grip and will help with the mud falling off better than if they were tight, yes bands are better but will sap your power and screw up you transmission and diffs and hubs, 6k for bands is expensive and used are hard to come by, but not impossible
  11. Don't know you are managing to move unless you have got a pretty flat site, especially with all the rain recently. Having good TRS tyres helps but only up to a point.
  12. He used to come to ride off road motorbikes up by us in the moorlands od Mid Wales. In his day what a player, super quick, RIP.
  13. Do you get called out Jon? If so how much do you charge?
  14. Its just that the whole saw is new, its normal, every new chain stretches, dont worry anout it.
  15. You must market and sell the timber first, the buyer will tell you what sizes they require, then you give the sizes to the harvesting contractor for him to cut, tell the buyer that you will pay the haulage sothat you are in charge of what loads go where and when, or you can go down the standing sales route and sell the timber standing to harvesting company', IE £10 per tonne or so, they arange everthing themselves, all you do is show them the areas in question and keep an eye on whats happening, hope this brief outline helps,
  16. To clarify matters, the Eintzartzgruppen or the secret police were responsible for the consentration camp's.,the Waffen SS were at the frontline alongside the regular army the Wehrmacht, half of which were foreign volunteers who fought for Germany against Stalins Communists.
  17. Hitlers Waffen SS divisions would relish taking on Isis. Irrelevant I know but...
  18. the media will be all over this story for weeks to come. what happens to all the other news that they were going to put out? all of a sudden it doesn't exist.
  19. Did you know that 75% of the German Army in the Second World War perished in Russia. Thats approx 5,000,000.
  20. well I'll be sticking with Huskvarna thank ye very much, next one will be number 30 in as many years. it also helps that I have got a lot of spares of old saws should I need them. good local dealer who treats me well etc. can't see myself changingto another make. 90% of the forestry people I know use husky too, the name huskvarna is synonymous with serious timber felling.
  21. Perish the thought old boy. Our John a tyre kicker? Surely not.
  22. What most of you here fail to realise is that most customers have mortgages to pay, kids to feed, council tax to pay etc, and paying for tree work is low on their list of priorities, its a bit like, a caviar producer saying to us why are your eating sandwiches instead of caviar, or getting the most expensive tyres on your car, etc, .. its down to what people want to spend on things at the end of the day ,whether you will do a better job or not doesn't always come into play,
