  1. Is it an artic you want or a smaller lorry? If it is an artic then P A Laing from the borders travels all over the uk, they move a lot of big forestry machine to the highlands so are passing Glasgow regularly, try and do it on a back load so they are passing close to you instead of them coming to you direct from there base as it works out far cheaper, google PA Laing for their number.

    Tyres

    is twin wheels an option.
  3. national parks are full of ' white settlers ', escaping the rat race, I would probably do the same if I was living in urban Britain, in our local town you won't here a local acsent, might as well be in deepest Berkshire.
  4. It's a horrible feeling hitting stone or metal, I get that sinking feeling followed by expletives, the longer the bar the more time to sharpen, if the chain is hit badly I don't bother sharpen anymore as they are never quite the same as before,
  5. very good. is the music by Capercaille?
  6. Get some cats. They'd love it.
  7. It looks to me as if they want to change the present system for changes sake, thinking up ideas to keep their jobs going.
  8. Try another oil, got to be the oil you are using, put a bit of hydraulic oil in just to get you going for today
  9. What a shocking tale.... tell them because they have gone ahead and repaired the wall without your consent you have no option but to let them deal with your insurance company, See where that gets them.
  10. Thing is though bob no one ever does get together, I know of two friends that were friends with each other until recently are now in competition with each other to obtain work by undercutting each other,
  11. ok i have had a look at the picture again and all i can come up with is that your felling bar is too small for use with the size of the timber that you want to turn, is the spike only penetrating the bark and not the timber underneath,if so that could be your problem,
  12. dont know why you are having problems with what is a quite a simple consept, place the spike about an inch further than where you want the spike to penetrate the log to allow the 'bite' and slowly ease the spike into the log by pulling on the handle, this has never failed in my experience, or is the log not turning because it cant due to being to heavy or stumps stoping the log from moving.
  13. Timberjacks are that bit better built, although the valmets are better on diesel, 10 gallon of diesel a day at most, my old 820 did me well, had the odd problem, but on the whole I liked it, as with all forwarders just watch for play in the centre bearing and extend the crane fully out and rock side to side to look for excessive movement in the crane base, tyres are expensive so have a look for the side walls splitting, bogies either work or they don't so no way of way of knowing what they are like inside, if you do buy, these are old machines now, which require a degree of what I call 'nursing', i.e, not over loading and hammering it, nice and steady is the way to go to avoid ordering expensive parts..good luck.
  14. Well its the driest winter I ever remember, it's only rained proper for two days this autumn-winter, which for Wales is almost unheard of, the rivers are at summer levels and the water is as clear as gin, which is a sigh of dry weather to come, resovoiirs are very low for the time of the year.
  15. at the end of the day cutters are just subbies working for the main harvesting contractors, doing the edge trees that they cant do with the harvester, I have done a lot of this work over the years and I often think to myself why do I do it if they cant be arsed to do it themselves, they are in air conditioned cabs with the radio on and me soaked to the skin wedging a 3 ton rough sitka over that's 800 metre walk from the van over brash stumps and ruts etc, I do it to fill in when my own work is quiet. the worst parts are walking with all the clobber over long distances and eating out in the winter all cold and wet sheltering behind a upturned root plate from the elements, anyone that's done this knows whats its like.
  16. Stephen. its totally unrealistic to suggest than anyone should or will want to work 7 days a week, especially a tough game as forestry, not to mention lone working,.. if you haven't made your money pushing a saw by 4.30 on a Friday there is something wrong with the figures you are working for.
  17. County's can take a bit of handling if you don't know how to manage it at first due to the poor steering lock, but I tell you what after driving a few valmet 8 series my county 754 will climb the side of a house incoparrison with the valmets.
  18. anyhow I'm off to bed. speak again.
  19. yes I know what you mean. do you cut the whole tree into lenghs or just fell and trim? I just fell and trim and cut the first couple of pieces off if they are too big for the head, the harvester comes along after I have finished and cuts the tree to lengh. its a hard old game especially if there is a long walk in with all the clobber!!
  20. doing edge trees that the harvester cant do. I try to fell the trees parallel with the road as opposed to felling them back in the wood against their natural lean. its a lot quicker and easier I find and the brash doesnt cover the cut timber that the harvester cut previously. but you probably know this already. well done.
  21. good stuff, is that up by the rest and be thankful? you can always tell a good feller by the way they step back as the tree begins to fall,as to avoid being hit by falling branches etc. nice straight spruce too.
  22. he'll be doing ok for himself doing the night shift flogging easy lift products as a sideline so I gather. thats where the money is.
  23. He's finding his next candidate now that the Clintons are of no use to him.
  24. it remains to be seen how long before Soros gets Trump in his pocket.
  25. Info wars are reporting that Trump is refusing to take his presidents salary, not one dollar will I accept, Trump says,.....
