It does work but be very careful what you tie the rope to. I know of one were it went wrong and it broke bones and another where the lad turned the chopper resulting in rolling the chipper.

I've got a couple of big bits of ash about 2.5-3ft diameter. It's been felled about a year. Now the question is am I ok to mill it now or do I leave it till about October?

Get a ripping chain. Won't be perfectly smoothe but a lot better don't see saw the mill and keep the chain sharp.
