  1. First impressions --- not good. After initial shock of harsh looking pruning There may have been good reason for the work, you need to know the history, it may have needed reducing because of a weakness or decline? who knows. As others say I would also prefare to keep a tree than fell if possible. This paticular job, could have been done better imo.
  2. Done it mate good luck!
  3. These smocks are great, the pants are not bad for waterproof but dont last long because of poor stitching.
  4. Good luck Verena, hope it all goes well. Do you feel confident? Matt
  5. 'I love trees but not this one' 'These are forest trees' Most annoying are the ones that wait until youve come down the trees and cleaned up and then say.........can you just.... im sure some more classics will follow
  6. Thoroughly demoralised today! Climbing in this constant rain is no fun. Cant wait to put the wet clothes and boots on in the morning My favorite is sliding the prussik knot up the rope and feeling the cold water run down your arm and body ah well i suppose there's worse jobs! keep smiling and carry on
  7. Once i spent two hours carefully dismantaling an awkwark tree over a fence, only to then fell the remaining stem onto it while rushing to get the job done. dont rush

  9. I was really impressed withy the Quadchip 160 track. In the past I have only used greenmech chippers on hire from Aplant and they were the worst i have ever used so that has always put me off since. However with this track chipper on a trailer you get the best of both worlds. We are definatley going to try and get one on demo and im wondering if any of you have got them and if it is viable/easy to use them while they are on the trailer aswell as off it? And how reliable they are, easy to change blades and anvil? They certainly look good but if you put all your eggs in one basket and get rid of your towable and track for one, they would have to be good. British built aswell! - bonus

  14. Too late!!
  15. NPTC's are assessments - an actual certification, Lantra awards are a bit different- they run alot of different training courses on all sorts like 4x4 driving, forklift trucks and agricultural stuff as well as chainsaw training. there are different levels of assessment as well. ill see i Certification Explained found this it may answer your question matt
  16. I want to have a look at these cameras for your climbing helmet and I may even look at some new friction devices/lock jacks. and shiny knives and axes as always
  17. Great!! now after the event your telling me its harmful Not to worry -it went fine, flame grilled, soot covered, burnt crisp, raw in middle washed down with cold beer! Its what barbies are about! At least I saved five quid on charcoal. Just waiting for eyebrows and eyelashes to grow back now!
  18. Insect attack is something I often over look unless its absolutly obvious, its important to keep an open mind
  19. its a good explanation
  20. Cheers guys! I feel excited now it must be my pyromaniac side, going to go and chop some wood
  21. That could explain it! Insects, which moth are you saying Tony? When i see the dense growth on the twigs i look at this as a reaction to stress and the tree trying to get more foiliage out, but i suppose that could be down to repeated pruning or any form of stress, although it doesnt look like normal epicormic growth you get throughout the crown its more in the tips. Is this one of the things that points to being eaten by insects tony?
  22. Im thinking of havin a bbq today and wondered if i could use kindling/small logs instead of charcoal? Has anyone used/ done this? I would let it burned down to hot ashes before i started cooking. Its not going to poison anyone is it? or possibly melt the bbq!
  23. It could be a long list of things that could of killed it. Do you know of any history of work thats been done around it? digging, changes to the soil, damage to the tree, water logging, drought, contamination? From the pictures I would say it has been under stress for some reason and some pathogen has got into it and is killing it quickly.
  24. I'm exactly the same! Take it in your stride, its all experience.
