  1. Yes definatley, This is the first thing I always suggest, whether its because the tree is in poor health/struggling or perfect health.
  2. What made you think it was phytopthera? I thought Phytopthera would kill the needles from the tips in (Ramorum anyway) and maybe black staining or bleeding would be present on the bark? Are Cedars prone to Phytopthera? What do you think the chances of this Cedar surviving are? Obviously its not possible to remove infected material as the whole tree is affected. ta matt
  3. Thanks mate, exactly what I was looking for! Now at least i've got something to go back to the owner with. thankyou matt
  4. What are your thoughts on this? Ive been working in this garden where there is this cedar which was a very good specimen until about a month ago. When it has started turning brown and loosing its needles very quickly. There has been no changes/work to the ground or anything around the tree at all, I have just put it down to the terrible weather we have been having of late. So the million dollar question is what has done it? the drought in the spring or the rain in the summer? The ground is not water logged or even that wet, but it cant need water can it? its been raining for 3 months? not sure what course of action to suggest, any ideas? apart from the obvious mulching/aireation around the base. There is not some diesese that could be doing this is there? thanks in advance
  5. Its probably a better idea to remove the house.
  6. My definition of a Pollard is a stem 10-15ft tall which is proffesionally managed/cut over a cycle of years. My definition of Topping is a tree hacked off two thirds of the way up with rip cuts, usually done by a brick layer. Not sure if this is right but just what i always thought.
  7. As someone who is against topping/harsh reductions I think sometimes where Poplars and such are involved its not too bad of a practice especially if it means the trees are retained as apposed to removal. An example being, I had a job where there was a large Poplar which kept snapping large limbs in the wind and a few people wanted to remove it, we ended up convincing them to reduce it back to the frame work and see how it went on. It didnt look great to start with but its grown back better than ever, ive been waiting for it to start shedding the regrowth and need doing again, but as of yet its been fine, that isnt to say that it wont need further maintenace some time. Some trees can cope with harsh reductions more than others and grow back well, I think Poplars are one of them. As for the barber chairing it can happen with any tree, so long as you know what you are doing you should be fine. Regards M
  8. Ok great, I have a good selection of hammers of different sizes and weights so it should fit just fine. cheers gents
  9. I dont suppose if anyone knows if the Ryobi expand it engine unit will run the stihl trimmer head?? I know someone who is selling one cheap and If it fits the stihl trimmer head I may just get it as a back up. anyone?
  10. Spud what do you think about this cylinder? I know its hard to judge from a photo, I can feel light scores and thats after ive give it a rub with fine wet and dry and had some caustic on it, are the dark marks worn thru the plating or deposits on top do u rekon? bin it or should i do a bit more?
  11. [ Hit the nail on the head Unless you have managed to badly damage a nose on a brand new bar, its not worth changing them just buy a new bar.
  12. cheers spud, youre the man!
  13. Whilst we are on about changing pistons!! When you have removed the piston head and you hold the con rod there is very slight play from side to side does this mean the big end bearing has to be changed because its allowing the piston to move diagnally in the cylinder or is there a tolerance?
  14. Sometimes male bravado really goes wrong!! It never stops us though!!
  15. nice one spud found em straight away!! just got to measure the cylinder now and make sure i get the right piston size.
  16. Cheers for the advice guys, ill have a read trough some of your threads!! Where do you get the meteor pistons from? any recomendations? or should I just see whats on fleabay. thanks again matt
  17. Sorry to butt in! I also have a vertex vent, overall i'm very happy with it although it is getting a bit mingin inside (straps and liner) Does anyone know if you can buy new insides/liners?
  18. I have an old 028av saw that has had some piston problems (probably poor fuel was the cause, not me!), the piston is totally knackered and its caused some very light scoring to the cylinder. To buy a new piston and cylinder is very expensive and not worth it, but I have seen some copied pistons on ebay for around 20 quid and was wondering if its worth giving the cylinder a bit of an hone up and having a go at fixing it? If it doesnt work its only £20, do you think it might work or am i wasting my time? I know any scoring to a cylinder is not good But Might just give it a go as an experiment what do you think?
  19. Reading the question again!! I think youre right it sounds like they want a method statement showing guidance on how to make sure the tree is not damaged/destroyed during works in acordance with BS5837.
  20. Is it not an Arboricultural Constraints plan you mean? Surveying the trees to see if the proposed plans interfere with them?
