  1. No i was at Irstead Road with it, we were trailing that mono-rail idea which would have been quite good just couldn't move enough chip, we were then told to stop the money must have ran out? the BA then came in and burn't the rest. One rule for one etc!
  2. It looks like a volvo sno-cat, i used one once which was owned by the broads authority, is it the same one? home early today covered in hy oil snapped controls off splitter in woods so not too happy!
  3. so if we all plant cherry it will solve our rabbit problem?
  4. It should be ok if split and in the dry. I've had some beech outside which was a bit fiddly to extract so have left it stacked for two years, some has nearly gone over so try and get it indoors.
  5. It should do just as you know keep it in the dry. All they used to do was blaze it then would last in store till it was needed usually tool handles.
  6. I know of more than a few outfits round here who have gone over to the husky as their stihls have blown. One now has two huskys on a chainsaw mill having gone through two stihlsin a couple of years. I suppose its all hearsay really you don't know how people treat their saws?
  7. I'm getting a lot more interest from clients as soon as i mention quarter sawing it seems that what woodworkers really want. What is the smallest size of log you would quarter saw for the extra effort?
  8. Our local council pulls their own council homes down and squeezes four in the same space!
  9. I agree totally so what is the answer? The trouble is we have d-heads round here charging double what i do and getting the work!
  10. The problem is in the eyes of Joe tree work and firewood are non-essential items that any old pleb can do so aren't prepared to pay much for it. Sky Tv comes above the dangerous oak hanging over the highway!
  11. 1 tonne of beech usually produces me 1.5 split cubic M. Summertime felled wood can change that though.
  12. 1 tonne of oak produces me 1 split cube of logs which i'm currently struggling to shift at 65 per cube due to the bad press oak has been recieving this year.
  13. Like a slinky fox they creep back the cheaper yule logs were soggy! I told you so i say you get what you pay for! And now my price has increased! I am the only person in North Norfolk with logs under 20%?
  14. Morticed post and rail. 4 to 6" posts. The ones i bought in the past must have been done on a morticing machine but i don't have access to one. The plan was to drill two holes and join up the gap like on a gate hurdle. It has worked well with my carving bar on the 200. Just need to speed the hole drilling side up as no end to do.
  15. Thanks everyone. This is for green chestnut 4-6" wide. I find the flat bits do heat up a bit so burn the drill out! What size drill would you all recommend and where is the 300 quid auger available?
  16. I require a 2" auger drill bit for power drill ( if not then hand) for drilling green wood posts. Any ideas? the largest i have found is an 1 1/4" which just ain't big enough. Thanks in advance.
  17. You need to get on friendly terms with smaller sawmills, cabinet makers and joiners is that networking! Anyway i have no problems selling the odd oak butt etc you just need to know your local farms to borrow the telehandler to load the lorry. Hedgerow oak recently i've been shifting for 10.00 a cu ft when a nice size. You need to learn to measure timber its worth the effort you then sound as though you know something!
  18. Thats right and also poor felling it's worth removing branches on valuable butts before felling. But that eats into profit.
  19. You can fell the three d's without a licence. You need a licence to fell more than 5 cube m and can sell no more than 2 of it per calender quarter. 2 cube per quarter is quite a small amount to try and make a profit on?
  20. On strains shorter than a 100m i cut the net and add gripples. Then tension each one evenly bit at a time. Saves time on setting up strainers clamps etc. As you strain the vertical wires just bunch up together which still looks ok.
  21. For a well strained fence it needs to be high tensile net with well made box strainers. You will need a set of straining clamps and two sets of clamp strainers to get it to the correct tension. I have some you could borrow but you are a touch too far!

    560xpg

I have a 560 on trial and it really is like nothing else. So much power compared to 357 and feels lighter? This is the second batch and can't fault it.
  23. This year is very strange. Firewood sales this year seems to be on price which really hasn't been an issue before. I can only see the money worries getting worse for the public and volume log production will be too pricey for many. It seems by the threads on here location and weather is key to how busy you are? As stated before my prices are middle of the road, its hit and miss whether i get the confirmed order. Still plenty of green hilux loads flying about but i struggle to see where it is all coming from?
  24. Yes Big J but that class is feeling the pinch like you and i!
