  1. The brotch maker here would leave his wood six weeks before riving.
  2. Alec was it really true that the archers right arm was far bigger than the left due to the pulling effort? If so then the forces were truly large and the men super human.
  3. Started piece work felling in 1994. The average day rate was 60 quid self employed in Norfolk. Now hardly any cutters all done by big harvester including hardwood for firewood. Most cutters now tree surgeons!
  4. Good info. It would seem they used what ever they had! My sources state alder, aspen and poplar as were quick growing in the coppice and were only used once! Deal and ash seem to be prefered today.
  5. How many of us depend on logs for the winter or is it just a by product? My main job now is to fell and season as much wood as poss for the coming winter. Whats the point if i haven't got a market. Should logs just be a side-line?
  6. Couldn't have said it better Steve. Sold more but expected far more! The customer isn't loyal will go for the cheapest price then creaps back. Lots of people doing logs taking more custom. Lets not forget we are in a double-dip which we all knew was on the cards and money is tight as well as a mild winter. I now sell my logs green with a 20% discount till august same as every year, I sold 16 cube in april! Where is everybody?
  7. Yes sorry Rob its us. Confusion the first sign of .....?!?
  8. There are two different ones in the in situ photos, took us a day in the end to get them up and bolted! The first one came back down about five times! Not enough paint on the bolts to mark the holes! Be quick with the end bracket please Rob had a large sleeper order come in today!
  9. Just a few pics (now i've learn't the art) of green oak beams cut with the small log mill for clients house. 16' by 14 by 10 with 6 inch cut out to cover RSJ. The cuts outs took some work with the adze! Pictures don't do justice but look great in situ. Just heavy to get up there took five of us and a few bolts!
  10. How do you attach pictures?
  11. Don't rip the boards at all. Nail up vertically then using another whole board to cover gap. To allow air flow nail (if needed) small dia baton horizontally before fixing covering board. We call it 'Norfolk Board' without the baton. My stables are made from 30 inch oaks through and through cut and look great. You use the whole tree with no waste.
  12. The money could dry up long before then. Have draks not pulled their biomass plant? and has the tariff not already been reduced for solar? What has have happened to the poplar and willow beds that were planted in the 90's? Most have gone from round here A: cos the funding was removed B: cos the price of wheat has risen. I can show you five small woods nearby that have been grubbed out this winter and now have wheat on them. I thought those days were over? European funding for these projects may not last we must wait to see if it rains in Spain!
  13. We are still struggling to shift conifer. There has been a fall in sawlog prices again here. we can't predict the future biomass you never know?
  14. I totally agree, species need to be dual use such as ash in case the market fails at some point in the future. Why do we always have to re-write the book and forget about the failings of the past?
  15. I'm paying 20.00 per m3 for hardwood standing which equates to 20.00 per tonne. Ash and syc 20.00 per m3 which is 3/4 tonne to m3 so around 15.00 per tonne. I buy all my timber by stack measure as i move the wood myself there is always an allowance for air usually 50-60% depending on size and straightness of wood. I can only presume the 20.00 m3 quoted is the whole stack without the air taken off. Back to the original thread 40.00 per m3 would be right if you were buying beech with 50% taken off for air. Lets also remember that different parts of the country have different cord prices as can be seen by earlier threads. Someone posted a good thread last year on converting metres to tonnes which would be worth a re-look. Lets also remember that forestry is at times an unusual science. It takes years to know whats going on and at times difficult to keep track cos its usually all in someones head and won't conform to the book!! Agriculture you can look it up but timber prices well?
  16. I wasn't talking about you and you still don't know know what the fault is? No one can really help because they haven't seen the vehicle.
  17. You guys crack me up!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think he should go to a garage? We ain't seen the truck so we are pissing in the wind. Mine used to just cut out dead as i went along the fault was in the ignition barrel simply repaired with a tractor ignition from JSF.
  18. Mine did similar. It turned out to be a faulty ignition switch.
  19. As i said in my earlier post the td5 has a flat angle diff so has the ujs in line. the 300/200 has an angled diff so has staggered ujs. i don't think the td5 will fit the 300?
  20. Mine go before six months usually on any 110 i've had but do tow every day. I was told that whatever you try the grease will not get to all four parts of the yoke so some will wear quicker than others. Just remember that the older defenders with raised diffs must have the ujs replaced as made not in line as will be out of balance. The td5 has flat angle diff so the ujs are in line.
  21. sorry should have been wood 50-60%. Air 50-40%.
