1. I run an m7 with various lengths of bar, 18", 20", 25", and 36" depending on whatever Im cutting, most of the logosol work is large slab so the different bars, the m7/m8 carrier will make a big difference but you must pay close attention to the wear in the plastic guides, alittle wear will result in rather a lot of movement at the end of a long bar ( i have been know to cheat and hold the end of the bar up with a stick just as the cut starts, once in the timber, no problems) the one thing I will say though, no matter how good your hand sharpening is, get an electric bench machine ( a cheapy from lidl works just fine after a few tweeks) as the equality of cutters makes the biggest difference to cutting
2. 54gka, the nut on the bottom of the lifting beams doesnt square them up, it only adjusts the position relative to the measurement, your only angle adjustment is in the top rail, you do this by the use of your twisting aticks and eye, a bit of wood exactly 2" thick is then used to set up the lifting beams to the bar, it takes me between 15 to 30 minutes every ttime I move my mill to a new site ( after a near complete strip so it fits in my van) also your ground needs to be near level as you can get, or the feet shimmed to suit
3. why a 25" bar on a farmers mill, unless you plan on doing some big stuff, may I sugest you move down to a 20" bar. give rob at chainsawbars.co.uk a mail and get a gb bars solid milling bar (logosol bars are now oregon, and are terrible). it takes a bit of time to set the top rail and lifting bars exactly parallel and the bar level to them, but intial time spent is worth it
4. yes, your dolmar will fit, the cradle has slots and holes to accomadate options, have fun using it, everything doesnt have to be stihl or husky and yes, the board finish can be superb, its all down to the sharpening, and getting every tooth identical
5. the ones that run the forrest school training courses for the teachers and those in education have a tie in with those selling the overpriced logs.....they are what they recomend for the schools to buy......an easy con , inexperienced and gullable freshly exposed to a group of individualls out to make a quick buck
6. to get a realistic idea about power requirments, logk at logosols electric saw. they start at 5kw, and 3phase at that you would be better looking at a bandsaw setup
7. 1st question to ask.......what are the flow requirements and working pressure of the hiab.....then start from there
8. update to my question, here is a pdf detailing the differences........... mill differences.pdf
9. does anyone know what the differences between the early, 2015-2016 mills to the 2017 mill, apart from the galvanised rails, as ive been informed the new trailer wont fit the early mills
10. hi james, get a solid gb bar for milling, solves all your droop problems, and if you are getting a lot of large dia stuff, turn the mill upside down, ........mount the mill to the log.....details on the logosol us site, there is a logosol handbook about it
11. whats all this battery crap got to do with the budget ??????
12. there you go then , LR weight 3050kg, acording to the wise nerds that work things out the recomended max wieght for towing...80%......2440 kg, why then does LR shove another 1000kg onto this figure
13. and how much nox do you think an unleaded petrol engine emits......one of the reasons no 4 gas test........ the biggest problem with diesel is smart arses trying to blame them for every air polution problem, by screwing about with what they're allowed to emit as exhaust the "experts" have managed to take a design that was hard working, very long lifed, produced very little noxious emissions(if kept properly maintained and tuned) now with egr, ad blue, and dpf and cats, they are efectivly killing the engines, and with the new generation of bio fuels, none of these are needed because the base material isnt a hydrocarbon so a little h2o and some co2 and minor particulates are all that comes out. and as for the move to electric, your just moving the problem to the end of a wire..
14. another way to look at the farse that is LR tow limits.......most jap 4x4 pickups wiegh a lot motre than a LR, but are limited to 2, 2.5, or 3 ton, but why can an underwieght LR pull 3.5........paperwork, the big companies actually do think about safety, LR think about sales, especially after loosing there us market over safety issues and on the agri side, there are actually some strict rules in place concerning what, and who, can tow what, its just that you never hear much about any prosecutions cos they just arent major news
15. why are tractors allowed such heavy trailers......easy, they are restricted to 25mph, and must have sutible brakes to cope with the load. and as for pulling 3.5t loads with a land rover.....wouldnt do it , ever, the military downrate them for a reason. the only reason they have the magic 3.5t towing is so they can sell more of them (harks back to the LR stonefield fiasco of the past, and how many MP's had money invested in LR at the time)
16. everyone seems to be jumping on the "lets blame dirty diesels" bandwagon, have you all forgotten about the developments in bio-diesel production, and the fact that the newer stuff has no hydrocarbon emmisions at all, and is very close to total combustion, certain european car builders are realising figures that will blow the doubters out of the water............and why after all this time has no-ne ever questioned why the great rush to introduce the 4 gas test into MOT's for petrol engines was quickly dropped after the introduction of unleaded fuel....could it be the fact that the proposed levels could never be met with the technology as it was
17. I run an 18" lo pro bar when Im milling 10"-12" larch for cabins, its fast..........very fast , and on the logosol balance doesnt matter
18. tefc motor, std nvr starter switch, if the motors getting slow on starting, the capacitor is on its way out, your next fault will be not starting at all and the motor vibrating as it slowly burns out, the start capacitor causes a small "phase shift" between the windings and creates a rotating magnetic field, which is what causes the motor to spin........this happens naturally in 3 phase, but needs capacitor assistance in single phase
19. you can carry anything you like in your first aid kit.......the secrets in te description...your and treat yourself to an EFAW+F course
20. depends a lot on what your going to use the crane for.......purely timber work, a farmi 4.8m will fit well, for mixed use, a hiab, or atlas will go in behind the cab, but your reach will not be the same as a timber crane without a few extensions, and depending on how you choose to power it (onboard mog pump or external pto pump) will affect your lift, most hiab type cranes seem to run around the 300 bar, whearas timber ones, around the 180-200 bar, the mog runs at 200 bar, I know on mine this affects my total lift, the crane is down approx 30% on power running off the mog system(an atlas crane) and this has led tome getting a farmi on a tpl setup, with a seperate pump (fits front or rear with a little jiggery pokery ) and the extra reach is so handy
21. and how many can operate and run a large stenner on there own......its a catch 22
22. type, quantity, and condition of timber, size supplied and size required, acsessability and condition of "yard", these all have a bearing on the cost, as well as your kit,
23. the biggest problem with the older set ups is complying with H&S requirments....usually costs more than the kits worth, thats why so many are being pulled out and scrapped. Its possible to buy in a complete new mill from eastern europe cheaper than trying to re-rig an old stenner or forrester to comply with regs
24. check with your councill, if they have an arb crew, you should be able to tweek there risk assesments and method statement, just be aware that sometimes councills ask for higher than normal amounts on the public liability insurance, i.e. 10mil instead of the normal 5mil, have also known them to ask for proffesional indemity
25.

postcode here is KA18 2RF, last cabinI built was 1 load, run in around 20 ton, but this again depends on what the wagons are rated at, 100 logs is being on the generous side to cover any problems during the build, and allow for changes, ie porch, partitions and boarded floor and roof lining, the group has a budget, and although its not finite, I'll need to try and stick to it. hoping it can all be done in larch, lasts a lot better and a lot less shrinkage, also dont have the sticky sap problem...lol.....getting a bit tooold now for the black "spiderman " hands every night!!!
