  1. I'm not fat! just a little short for my weight! 6'4" and 16st or thereabouts. ( 1.94m and 99kgs) I'd feel better at 10kgs less I reckon, I can really feel my bellie wobble when I run...
  2. The Clarks jackets? Dunno?? Maybe try........ Clarks? http://www.clarkforest.com/shop/safety-clothing/jackets/cutandclimb-arb-jacket
  3. I've just treated myself to an Alaskan for Christmas and am on o job just outside of Bedford at the moment. So I'm interested! Would it be possible to lift it on a trailer?
  4. Have used these a lot and I've never found a pair that's better. I've not had to buy a pair from my own pocket money though.. http://www.worldoffelco.co.uk/cutting/Felco-Model-No.-22--FM22.html
  5. Felco (F22 I think) is where it's at. Curved, not straight though. No pair of properly adjusted, properly sharpened, properly used bypass loppers should leave a tear. The felco ones are strong, simple and easily sharpened and adjusted.
  6. Was that the survey he posted on here a week or so ago? This one? http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/large-equipment/51661-wood-chipper-stump-grinder-survey.html I'll have an XXL please
  7. Last time I pulled any serious trees over I had the good fortune to be able to piggy-back a road-closure and had one of these to pull.... 25mm rope, rated at 15 tons or so, and the saw became almost redundant:thumbup1:
  8. Looks like mould to me? Possibly the timber was not dry when it was cut into T&C? Or the storage afterwards has allowed it to get too wet. If you make sure the timber is dry and it'll stop growing and you'll be able to sand (most of) it off.
  9. Did not look either dead or a pendula to me? Good on ya for just having a go. Be careful though, and try to get your quals, won't hurt and may teach you a bit more to keep yourself safe.
  10. It'll not likely be dry though, however long it has been standing dead for. Oak has that peculiar habit of not really drying at all unless its split.
  11. Welcome sparrow, a nice choice of name indeed! I've had about 4 months worth of hedgelaying cancelled this winter so I know what you mean it being quiet. Keep going at it, I've always found the best way to gain customers is to lay hedges! People that have seen me work make up 95% of my new customers so even doing a but if work at cost or severely discounted for say the local village hall or such can pay off well. Good luck.
  12. Got a bottle of gin and a jar if chutney today, from a guy who was looking for my neighbour to give him a turkey!?! I walked round with him, tried his workshop and his mobile and the gut gave me the gin and chutney for my efforts?
  13. Some might well do, but their habitat is in tatters and they will not be likely to come out of hibernation again next spring as they're quite sensitive to temperature fluctuations (bark is a good insulator) and a pile off chip will quickly get hotter than the maximum temperature the beetle can survive at.
  14. Finished off Monday morning, back on the tools on the 7th. Three weeks of those jobs at home I never have time for.
  15. Elm bark beetles won't live in chip, they need bark on trees so seems logical enough to me?
  16. Ahem!! I'll have you know some very trendy young folk drive rovers too! Mine a 75, with heated electric memory seats, cruise control, 48mpg average loads of leather, real wood dashboard, etc etc etc. I bought it for £1250 3 years ago, and have put 125K m on it since. In short, Rover Rules.
  17. They need to move their wings to build up some warmth in their bodies to be able to flee and fly away from you.
  18. Why? Btw I have an axe called Finn...
  19. Nice tractor. A Dutch tractor magazine did a series of tests a while back, on older tractors, looking at what the maintenance costs had been, common faults, etc and also how much there was left of the pto horsepower. They tested a fair few tractors across the brand range, and included a 5140. It was the only tractor in the test to have more power than what it left the factory with! It had not been fiddled with, normal maintenance schedule, one owner from new, about 6000 hours on it. It's a good tractor (my brother bought the actual tractor they tested) and only had a few minor niggles with the electric system. The battery is not in a handy place, especially not with loader brackets but it looks like you've not got the cover on it anyway. I made some permanent "jump lead points" on my brothers for jump starting (-other vehicles). Well done

  21. We used to do a lot of moorland work, including birch regen up to 3" with a trailed forager. Then we had a silage wagon pulled behind the forager so only needed two tractors and operators. We had three wagons, to keep both tractors busy. Worked very well and very little to go wrong mechanically. Needs a fair amount of HP though.
  22. "Oooh, well I'm not really supposed to tell you but: we're making space for the new rehab centre" Always goes well along with: "to make space for the multi storey car park for the new Tesco's they're gonna put here"
  23. The new silky Tsurugi. Almost in budget. Silky Tsurugi 300mm large teeth | F R Jones and Son
  24. When one moves the T one space down, so it comes after the N it becomes slightly obscene. Just blokes' minds at work there...
  25. Tony, like I said in your other "we're all shagged" thread, though I admire your perseverance preaching won't get you far. If it did we'd al be Jehovas! .
