  1. I would strongly recommend not buying any van that belonged to a tree surgeon.
  2. hello avant owners / operators, 1) does any one run a flail / mulcher on an avant (e.g 600 series), how does it cope with stuff at the heavier end of flail work, e.g light gorse, rough bramble scrub etc). We would unlikely be doing grass work but like the idea of something for clearing sites. 2) If you had to pick just 2 attachments for tree work, what would they be? why? 3) If you had your time again would you pick another machine? why? either avant or not. 4) What would you expect the value of a 635 with around 600 hrs (reasonable condition) be? 4a) roughly, on average, how many hrs a year do you put on your machine? 5) how easy have you found it to adapt your own (non avant) kit to run on the machine. 6) the avant winch looks pants. is it? has anyone ever adapted a hydraulic timber winch to work on their machine? I found a 3t timber winch online that needs a min of 60lpm to run, 635 runs at 66lpm, Am i dreaming or could this work? Thanks guys. more to follow I'm sure.
  3. yeah, at around 8.5 - 9k
  4. really love mine, no issues. Ad-blue is a new one on me but so far easy enough. don't underestimate how huge the double cab is.
  5. yeah, and we had our piece in the garage so glad the sounds not on.

    jap knot weed

    grand, cheers mate.
  7. we are moving into a new yard, had the back area scraped and bunded. on Tuesday i noticed jap knot weed sprouting up through the mounds. Will hitting it with glyphosate from a knapsack repeatedly be enough or will it need stem injected?? Also thought about painting straight onto leaves, whats the most effective way? Cheers
  8. client sent me this today, she had a gopro set up in the garage window. (and before you start, the tree was originally scheduled for complete removal but she decided to retain the stem at 10ft the last minute.)
  9. years ago when i worked for a firm in aberdeen, we were pulled, both the driver and the owner were prosecuted, 3 offences each, front axle, rear axle and vehicle not fit for purpose (poor condition). the owner had to pull two more squads off work to shovel chip into other vans, what was in one barely fit in three legally, vosa also inspected the other two vans as they came in, expensive day for the boss.
  10. six chippers tom, i still regularly remember your article in the FJ, it was my inspiration at the time. well done.

    Solo Tree Work

when i first started out I did a lot of work on my own, I remember rigging out bits on a figure of 8 in the tree using both end of the line and having to go down to tidy up every 2 mins. Now as an employer, I cant afford to even think about sending guys off on their own.
  12. two grand? I've probably done a small countries GDP over the years.
  13. this is the type of detail that really marks well thought out and engineered furniture making. one seat for daddy one for mummy and two for the kids. this is obviously why it carries the larger price tag, bargain.
  14. yeah, ok, but how much have you claimed back dealing in firewood?
  15. if your selling/buying firewood to trade vat is applied at 20% when selling/buying to end used vat is applied at 5% you dont really reclaim vat. you have to keep a tally of what you spend in vat and what you earn in vat and you pay the difference.

    Guying a big log

if you use chains with grab hooks be aware that they can pop off when the log bounces and tension is released. I had two chains on one log, one held one popped off. aye squeaky bum.
  17. most of the guys that beat at my old mans do it for the keepers day at the end of the season.
  18. remember to pay your tax and ni on that boys.......
  19. Just out of curiosity, what does this go for / used for I mean?
  20. i so firstly I never give a verbal quote and quotes are written +vat with the figure of vat shown then total cost, eg: 500 subtotal 100 vat (20%) 600 total
  21. don't be afraid of the vat, I can honestly say its probably been one of the best things for our business. Change your attitude, change the way you approach jobs, dont change your pricing, price what you need +vat, stick to your guns and it will balance out. I was worried about loosing work but 3 years later we are booked till Christmas.
  22. is this from Morris Leslie? I'm getting a telehandler delivered from them next week or so. in dundee.
