  1. Road Lice ! like it !?
  2. Sounds like you need two tractors. definitely need 100hp for that sort of weight on the road, especially if in hilly areas. Farmers might prefer you use a lighter tractor on their lands though. classic aged tractors don’t depreciate as quickly as most things and don’t cost a fortune to insure so not the worst investment so long as they are reliable.
  3. Enjoyed that. seen the credits. did your machine operator die?

    Stihl 028

John Cathcart, stihl dealers Enniskillen N.I. Have a lot of parts for old stihls
  5. Does anybody else dab toothpaste on thorn stabs and scrapes? very soothing and once it dries it’ll stay on til you scrub it off
  6. I had to replace directional valve in mine . Sounds the same.
  7. When I started cutting in 1987 , a lot of our work was line thinning on steep sites extracted in bundles of 5 or 6 foot logs with a jones high-lead set up on a 764 County. Looks like that’s what they were doing in the last photo. The bundle would pretty much bounce it’s way down the slope pinball style, many bundles would open, many of the side trees would have bark damage. The chocker- man was only safe uphill of the bundle and he dare not poke his head out when the cables were whipping around the place. The 2way radio were erratic at best. The guy on the controls hadn’t it easy either, on his knees on the tractor seat while winching, climb out of tractor, climb stack, open chocker, tidy logs , down off stack and back into tractor maybe 5 times per ton. Really makes you appreciate the remote control winches we use nowadays.
  8. Great to see. ? The “ falling objects protection “ in the last two photos not too good
  9. Interesting thread ? I have looked at some of the smaller plastic bundled tanks, 250 litres or so . is it still the case that nowadays MGO has a shelf life of just a couple of weeks? This is main reason I haven’t bothered setting up 1500 litre tank at home.

    Covid-19

Yep ! My sister is a respiratory nurse, doing 12 hr shifts etc all with full ppe ( including out of date masks) I bow down to every single one of them. I have to wear them for maybe an hour max when on wards doing maintenance, and that's more than enough. But what pirates me, is the fact when all this is over, the frontline staff will be forgotten about, whist the stay at home 'managers' will be taking all the credit. And €180k a year in many cases
  11. Could never get on with those roller thingys. found the stihl/pferd multi ones good but they get a bit loose and giddy after a while. Also one for each file size run into a nice few quid. The old flat guides are as good as any, cheap and last forever.
  12. We got Farma 180 shear grab about a year ago. Use it on Valtra/botex or 3ton digger. For what it cost it justifies itself mostly as a ‘tiltable’ grab for grabbing standing stems, holding/sectioning down stems,holding/easing down small to medium trees. Great for taking tangled Leylandi hedges apart . pretty good for feeding chipper ( not as good as brash grab but better than log grab) great at crushing forks. Have only used a couple of times with blade on. Takes a bit of practice to get a feel for what it can and can’t cut. has exceeded expectations really but will probably go for Jak 200 or similar at some stage

    Covid-19

That’s just about the most intense job there is, especially wearing all the ppe. A friend of ours works in icu, her face is now all marked from mask. can only take pre planned breaks cause have to change ppe to use loo, so next to impossible to drink enough to stay hydrated. must be exhausting. hope your daughter stays safe and well?

    Covid-19

I’m sure there are many cases like that. Probably be cases where neighbours will fall out permanently and cases where don’t like each other to begin with will put in reports

    Overloaded

Didn’t think it was overloaded TIL I tried to tip.
  16. One of my battery huskies is leaking chain oil inside . oil weeping out of trigger. Anyone had this ? might have a go at it next wet day.
  17. Tw 190: 2500hours . New radiator, hole worn in discharge chute and needed new axle when I sold it. Still going strong. jensun 328 tracked: 3500hours. Needed a few parts over 6 years we had it. Most expensive part maybe €250 to 300. Still earning its keep for new owner
  18. Bit of wall building on farm
  19. Agreed. Hopefully Britain/Europe etc will start manufacturing our own stuff, components etc instead of importing from far side of world made by what is borderline slave labour. stuff will cost more but so be it.
  20. Sounds like a good use of time. old people here have a saying ( in Irish) roughly translates to. ”in times of stress, put your hands in clay”
  21. If lockdown goes beyond a month, (and I expect it will) might do a bit of chainsaw work for harvesting guys I’m friends with. hard going and not great money but I enjoy a few days of it every now and again for some reason (sad, I know)
