  4. Do you ever feel in danger of loosing the shiny toys as they need replacing?
  5. I would be very interested. When would you be able to do this
  6. Just wondering if anyone on hear can recommend a good course for learning more about tree reports. We are regularly asked to report on trees on sites where we work but I'm getting the feeling this is just so the landowner can use us as the scapegoat if there is an incident. They obviously need species & condition report plus recommendations. I get the feeling this is a growing area within the arb world and feel we could do this work well- but would we be able to stand up in court with authority without training in this field.
  7. Blimey- you keep your blades nice and sharp You want to put some road granite dust through- that'll sort them out. You'll not cut yourself then:001_smile:
  8. small electric is pretty tough but we found they overheated quite quickly if used hard and kept tripping out. This though may have been just our machine
  9. Very accurate but is it really necessary Could you not use other more 'countrystyle' methods We used to use a set square and spirit level and just sight along the angled edge- provided the base was level walk back or forward till you sight the top of the tree- always worked pretty accurate I presume though you had the laser for other work and have found this to be another
  10. Thanks I know what you're saying about end February- nesting does start really early Just get the feeling there's only likely to be maybe pigeons and possibly collared doves nesting now and we've seen no evidence of either and as theres plenty of other habitat on the site that we're not touching I feel now is about as good a time to do the work as there is. My concern is that I know there are a few people who have put bird feeders out in the area and who will be annoyed at what we have been asked to do. There is bound to be some ruffled feathers. I should be hardened to it I know. But if the s**t hits the fan what legally am I obliged to do. Anyone?
  11. We have been asked to cut back some mixed shrubbery containing ivy/ cherry/sycamore/ cotoneaster/ eleagnus/ senecio. Being aware that there are some bird lovers in the area and there is evidence of birds perching and feeding but I would be curious to know what legally do we really need to do before commencing operations. I have looked and not found any nests but is there anything else we should do before getting stuck in.
  12. Well said that man Surely no one is in that much of a hurry that a 30 second delay ruins their day
  13. I find even day rate is problematical You work hard and finish early and they ask for some money off or expect some xtras They don't also understand that your day doesn't finish when you have swept up
  14. £500 a tree
  15. Can you not just use stem injection with roundup
  16. This timber thing is just too complicated I'm gonna stick with nuclear physics:001_smile:
  17. Thats the one I'm putting casual climbers down as an additional employee on top of existing It's not worth the risk otherwise
  18. Thats put my mind at rest I've checked with my insurer and he confirms Thanks for your help
  19. Having noticed several posts on here advertising for climbers (experience and kit essential)- I am curious how no one specifies that they need to be insured (own insurance) to be what the insurance industry calls bona fide sub contractors. Or does 'fingers crossed' work. Needless to say I'm just going through the small print on my insurance.
  20. vat is a tax on enterprise we pay approx 30k to the gov each year for what not sure yet but there must be a reason any ideas?
  21. Don't give up coffee we've got some of the best coffee in the world The life of an addict is not so bad- going from one coffee fix to the next:thumbup1:
  22. It's a real mess ain't it OK so long as you're vat registered but a bit unfair if not. Mind you- what about seatbelts/airbags on cars- are these vat exempt Fire extinguishers safety glass non slip floor tiles anti vibration mounts on chain saws i'm sure the list is lomger
  23. bank charges are always too much but you get a good deal i suppose- don't tell the bank. Don't withdraw cash or pay it in
  24. we've got about 6 stihl polesaw heads it seems common for oilers to stop working This may be something you've hit on I'll check with my fitter- he has had a look at them previous
  25. un fortunately you need the courts so we can sleep happy in the knowledge we have done our best. Without that judicial event we would be blowing in the wind subject to public perception
