  1. Dig it rough... not like in the textbook Dig it dry if you can Put tree in and then flood it- and i mean flood it Then backfill with a bit of jollop Firm in Job done
  2. C/S gloves designed before chainbrake developed yet H&S say to wear them Talk about backwards. Like I say, I can only see the point in them as padding for the back of your hand when applying the chain brake- the need for chain protection is not there Manufacturers love H&S- £20 a throw
  3. Spent the day in east anglia yesterday listening to quite passionate researchers from the forestry comission explaining the various hopelessness of their situation- with some positives. Interested to note that control of OPM largely ineffective as the area now infected is quite large centred around west london. There was talk of another area where it has been found My question to all on here is Have you found Oak Processionary Moth and if so where?
  4. I don't know anyone who has made a claim- employers/public liability Anyone?
  5. Rob You're using some sort of tree ident book-am I right?
  6. leylandii is still a tree treat it as such and you'll love it
  7. interesting thread ....compared to chainsaw cuts These silkys need a CS course anyone......?
  8. just check the small print
  9. used to wear them filled with the knowledge that cs31 gave me but now feel they are generally too expensive though make it easier to put the chain brake on when you move about- not so painful on the back of my hand
  10. does all our nuts H&S are the new unions- there to stop exploitation of the workforce but actually rule out common sense application of your knowledge and ultimately your responsibility. Just wish staff could when necessary opt out (and I know thats what they often would like to do)- I know it will never happen but you gotta dream
  11. over 7000 views:001_huh:
  12. nfu's now for farmers only I think they had a forray into other trades and got their fingers burned. Messed us about something dreadful and after 9 years claim free trade from us. Nice people but their underwriters are now too cautious and they don't quote and hope you just go with what you have which in our case was- no insurance over 6 metres- GREAT!
  13. take a day out and do something else
  14. one reason is that the south pole is ice on top of land= not floating ice Check out antarctica on google earth It fills the whole of your screen when looked at from below Thats mile thick ice sitting on rock
  15. how many lumps of coal in a coal sack- similarly ridiculous Best not to argue with customers though You don't always know where customers are coming from Maybe she reckons to burn say 10 per night and so 300 logs would last a month in her head OCD is universal how many steps on a stairs how many matches in a tree
  16. thats gonna keep u fit
  17. This is almost exactly what we found plus there is a hearth issue We got our stove about 1.5kw too big and don't regret it. We leave the room door wide open- can get it really toasty even so plus the wood is theoretically free so efficiency isn't a huge issue. The installers insisted on a liner and because they were HETAS registered they didn't need building control to sign it off- saved about £200 from memory Obviously not as cheap as doing it DIY but don't forget the insurance issue- if the house burns down and is not insured then thats expensive DIY.- I'm being all sensible here I know. Model is clearview- brilliant
  18. Someone commented earlier Even with factory bought machines- you have to have your wits about you. If you design your own then please be careful Definately be careful if you ask someone else to use it- any injury and you will be in deep dung- you will have no kite mark /BS and I doubt insurers will help. I have to say I love some of the homegrown affairs though- very imaginative:thumbup:
  19. watch it with the liner thing I think you need a liner or the house insurance is invalid I may be wrong but building regs apply to log burners Liner/air vent/ hearth size It's crap isn't it If you're going ahead anyway- I like big- basically means you can chop bigger logs which is less work:thumbup1:
  20. I know exactly what you mean Even when you say- stuff this chasing around thing every year Still they change the wording on the policies and suddenly you find nfu only insure up to 6 metres- tree surgery!!!!! So you move and suddenly they want evidence of all certificates gained including H&S courses, risk assessments in place AND the price goes up- AND you've never had a claim Insurers just take the (p*ss) premiums regardless and if you haven't read the small print then -lookout Then you have to shop around the next year 'cos they've increased the premium by 20%= do the whole thing all over again. It was so much simpler 30 years ago
  21. So as an employer you have no choice Pay to train employees up or face the consequences Try to engender good relations and a happy workforce and maybee trained staff will stay and give you a chance to get the training money back I believe as an employee you are pretty well protected with all the duty of care stuff being laid at the employers feet. And you wonder why your boss is stressed out today:001_rolleyes:
  22. If I employed you I would put you through the training Must get employees to sign similar contracts like YOU do
  23. Just needs a bit more professionalism from everybody Testosterone males need not apply
  24. Hold on fellas Don't just use this to have a go at your employer He/She has got a hell of a situation Trying to keep you busy employed but all the time trying to confirm to updating legislation. It costs a fortune to a. pay for the ticket b. pay for you to have a doss 3-5 days getting the ticket Do you not understand the expense. At the end of the day YOU have the ticket and the employer has nothing. YOU can leave and seek employment elsewhere with a ticket that your current employer has paid for. If you are being disruptive then can't you see that your employer thinks you will not stay with the firm. Why should he pay for your ticket Doh It's hard running a business YOU have probably never done it so YOU don't understand. If you have done it and failed then don't start rocking the boat just because you've got a chip on your shoulder Them and us.... it's a 2 way street Rant over...For now:sneaky2:
