  1. Expanding without too much stress:laugh1: It's not that so much as being able to cope when the inevitable stress occurs Get a hobby/sport- anything to get your mind away from work and you will find stress easier to deal with- I know- not easy when you are trying to develop a business. But- it is very important and don't overlook it. Try to keep weekends free always and only use saturday as a day extra if things go pete tong Have flexibility in the system and don't price up too tight hours wise- the weather will always play a part in the profitability of any job Be prepared to walk away- thats from jobs and from people who just grate on you. Above all be prepared to say NO!
  2. This is so true Also if you've got flu and someone tells you theres a £50 note dropped in the street you just can't be bothered. Most 'flu's' are just colds. I've had flu once and it was just like this- also- You wouldn't be on arbtalk if you had flu- not a criticism but a fact:laugh1:
  3. I thought I saw you there but I didn't get a chance to say hello- Summing up was a demo on biosecurity kit which was funny Final chapter was the FC main man being hauled over the coals by the audience for not having enough passion for the job- not gunning for more grant money though basically having a fantastic team around him.(so maybe he is doing his job right- as I assume he puts the team together) There is an extra £7million available over 3 years but I now understand that this is to be competed for by the FC and universities so the future looks bleak for some FC research. I too fancied a walk around those woods- there were some big trees there!! and very relaxing part of the world other than the single carriage way route home congestion
  4. Janey- a couple of years ago we had a number of cases of hairy caterpillars causing rashes on people- not seen by me on Oak but on cotoneaster and hawthorne- do you know what this beestie was?
  5. I would prune it next April Olives generally tough as old boots- we spent about £750 on three last november and they all survived the winter Phormiums and Bays didn't
  6. I think your approach is to be applauded Certainly for me the danger is part of the fun
  7. Dig it rough... not like in the textbook Dig it dry if you can Put tree in and then flood it- and i mean flood it Then backfill with a bit of jollop Firm in Job done
  8. C/S gloves designed before chainbrake developed yet H&S say to wear them Talk about backwards. Like I say, I can only see the point in them as padding for the back of your hand when applying the chain brake- the need for chain protection is not there Manufacturers love H&S- £20 a throw
  9. Spent the day in east anglia yesterday listening to quite passionate researchers from the forestry comission explaining the various hopelessness of their situation- with some positives. Interested to note that control of OPM largely ineffective as the area now infected is quite large centred around west london. There was talk of another area where it has been found My question to all on here is Have you found Oak Processionary Moth and if so where?
  10. I don't know anyone who has made a claim- employers/public liability Anyone?
  11. Rob You're using some sort of tree ident book-am I right?
  12. leylandii is still a tree treat it as such and you'll love it
  13. interesting thread ....compared to chainsaw cuts These silkys need a CS course anyone......?
  14. used to wear them filled with the knowledge that cs31 gave me but now feel they are generally too expensive though make it easier to put the chain brake on when you move about- not so painful on the back of my hand
  15. does all our nuts H&S are the new unions- there to stop exploitation of the workforce but actually rule out common sense application of your knowledge and ultimately your responsibility. Just wish staff could when necessary opt out (and I know thats what they often would like to do)- I know it will never happen but you gotta dream
  16. nfu's now for farmers only I think they had a forray into other trades and got their fingers burned. Messed us about something dreadful and after 9 years claim free trade from us. Nice people but their underwriters are now too cautious and they don't quote and hope you just go with what you have which in our case was- no insurance over 6 metres- GREAT!
  17. one reason is that the south pole is ice on top of land= not floating ice Check out antarctica on google earth It fills the whole of your screen when looked at from below Thats mile thick ice sitting on rock
  18. how many lumps of coal in a coal sack- similarly ridiculous Best not to argue with customers though You don't always know where customers are coming from Maybe she reckons to burn say 10 per night and so 300 logs would last a month in her head OCD is universal how many steps on a stairs how many matches in a tree
  19. This is almost exactly what we found plus there is a hearth issue We got our stove about 1.5kw too big and don't regret it. We leave the room door wide open- can get it really toasty even so plus the wood is theoretically free so efficiency isn't a huge issue. The installers insisted on a liner and because they were HETAS registered they didn't need building control to sign it off- saved about £200 from memory Obviously not as cheap as doing it DIY but don't forget the insurance issue- if the house burns down and is not insured then thats expensive DIY.- I'm being all sensible here I know. Model is clearview- brilliant
  20. Someone commented earlier Even with factory bought machines- you have to have your wits about you. If you design your own then please be careful Definately be careful if you ask someone else to use it- any injury and you will be in deep dung- you will have no kite mark /BS and I doubt insurers will help. I have to say I love some of the homegrown affairs though- very imaginative:thumbup:
