Ive been 3 times each 6 weeks or more. We buy an old car then sell it. Its easy to get insurance they are geared up for traveling tourists. Last time we went it was 2008-09. You also get to sell the car at the end. South island is spectacular. The ferry for Wellington to picton amazing views. Milford sound is a long way out and I wouldn't go there again. But have been twice. Christchurch and canterbury is flat and boring. The arthurs pass is a brilliant drive with good walks off it. West coast of south island wet and dull. I recomend at least a month on first trip.

I remember doing pipeline hedge planting a few years ago with a berlingo van, it was winter and wet but we got everywhere, I think I only jumped out once with it in gear to shove it through a sticky patch. Never got stuck. That only had regular tyres. Only downside to vans is towing ability legal weight.

You may get away with scarifying with a good industrial type of scarifier. Some flail mowers can get interchangeable blades to mow or scarify. To do this sort of job as a business you need a 2 wheel pedestrian tractor or 4 wheel compact I think. If you use an allotment type garden cultivator you will wreck it and yourself.

Tree is not Alnus cordata or glutinosa, incana is dull. I dont think its rubra either. All alnus ive seen including various grafted cultivars are much more widely spaced in the leaf habit.cones certainly look like alder. Have they fallen of another tree nearby and got wedged in mystery tree. The tree twig looks like a malus spp. But could it be an exotic such as Tupelo known in latin as nyssa i think or similarly spelt.

Ive not used skidsteers much but they can be very capable tool carriers,Ive seen northern tree transplanters treespade in action on a bobcat with tracks in muddy winter conditions. Impressive. Winch and logsplitter should be no problem either, treespades need good hydraulic capability. northerntreetransplanters
