  1. We use 2 BCS tractors on the tree nursery I subbie for. They are not an anvil of a tractor, Lots of plastic components, The reversible drive is useful but the 2002 volcan model has now got the steering console held together with cable ties and wobbles. Also the geometrey of the rear linkage does not suit some equipment especially some pto operated equipment Depending what you are after in a tractor the simpler you can have it the better for hard forest work. However for power 80-90hp on a small footprint very good. I notice your Kubota is fitted with turf tyres and mid mounted mower, what work would a replacement tractor be doing?
  2. As kids we bought cheap split green garden canes. Sand them smooth if fussy to get rid of splitters. sharpen tip with pencil sharpener. Fix a nut (nut and bolt type) on tip end with elastic band wrapped around many times. Fill old ici fert bag (giving away my age) with grass cuttings. Tie baler twine round neck of bag and suspend from tree. The "thwack" noise was authentic hollywood style. Many school holiday hours went this way at little cost and no hospital visits. Probably not the answer you are after but a quick way to get going and establish lengths weights etc.
  3. I cheated and looked it up, now I can sleep unbothered.
  4. I rub a chalk rock on my files every so often then using a wire brush or old tooth brush rub chalk out. Then twist the file through a rag. Files last me a heck of a lot longer. Also I use a length of pvc pipe(diesel fuel pipe) bent to kink it a little, over the file when not in use. Only on windsor files at the moment. P.s DN22 that woodchip pile is half gone now.
  5. I keep checking this post, I've had no success with amazon, but I have found it on walmart site for $39.99. Walmart don't do international. Could we get an order together and would an arbtalk member in the states send it if we organised payment first?
  6. Excellent real world risk assement me thinks. Slow motion is the only way to fall out of a conifer in my experience, did it lots as a kid, delibrately.
  7. Agreed, the aim I think for the h&s person is to bring about a standstill. To illustrate I did a day on a concrete mixer truck. One site all bannered out considerate constructor, etc. Building a school. To avoid sticking to their own liability, all subbies on site. Everyone miserable cannot wait to get off site to another job, always made to feel like a naughty schoolboy. I had to fill out a form on entering site, thou shalt not and around 10 commandments, The form also asked how far you had travelled to site(assume this is for another penpusher to fill his/her days figuring out carbon footprint whilst running heating and lighting in an office! One of the commandments was.Do not leave the ground without appropriate fall arrest equipment in place. I said "Ive got the ladder on the back of the truck that will do?" The security guy said ok. But if not I could not of washed the concrete chute and hopper out at the end of the job and concrete would of dripped off the back on the road, ruining their image and potentially causing damage to vehicles on the highway. Another one DO NOT REVERSE WITHOUT BANKSMAN. Which you have to do several times because no one wants responsibility and lack interest as they are always watching their own backs. Then what really amazed me on site a Man in full fall arrest gear on a flatbed artic trailer hooking up a cranes hook to lift concrete beams off the trailer, he was attached to a cord hung off the tines of a large merlo telehandler. My personal risk assessment would be. If anything goes for example the crane driver has a heart attack and slumps slewing the crane round wiping the handler out, bungeeing me on a tether. I'd rather risk falling 5ft in to a mudbath. I incidentally drove the mixer between the merlo and the trailer, whilst he was attached as no one was helping me where to take the load. But I wasn't bothered because like everyone else on site a ban is in your favour. I don't have a bad attitude to helping people but, H&S is now getting excessive, costing a fortune demoralising staff taking away self esteem and job interest, and in some cases creating power hungry unreasonable tyrants. Incidently my only dangerous experiences on a concrete mixer are getting hung up in a hi vis vest, on the inside of the cab door and on once on the ladders at the back!
  8. We use a bryce Suma (400kg hammer) too with a case 4230, It does it though. Its a a choice between nimble or high capacity work rate. The bryce is phenomenal in work rate without all the backache of adjusting top links etc, and forcing the mast to stay put which I had to do with our old knocker. It doubled our workrate from 100 to 200 meters a day stock or post and rail. When good going If entering the fencing game I'd find a specific area to specialize and get the gear for it. We have a nail gun (doubles rate from hammer) auger, wire spinners, tensioners long wood drill bits for gate posts and so on but you never seem to have everything you need, especially when you 1 st set up. Nice pics big bolt, we should take more photos.
  9. To throw another one in Hickory. several species available to chose from. Carya ........ The open crown habit looks similar to hickory.
  10. Millions of babys probably waiting to grow on the floor, might take a few years to keep on top of them.
  11. I was same initially it was intimidating, some instructors I had were stress pots. But 2 were very good. Most people have a casual attitude its only a bit different to other things, reality is quite a bit of adjustment. You will get the hang of it, I only drive trucks occasionally now. But would prefer to drive a truck over anything else(not a dodgy one tho) I did mine 16 years ago and only had to go for the C+E Due to red tape I wouldn't go for it now. Its the easiest way to be fined I think, these days. Also the cpc which has to be done by every commercial LGV driver is a real off putter. 5 days off work. Around £500 in costs. You are looking at the thick end of £1000 at present rates then you need to do it every 5 years, when you reach 45 medicals are up to £150 every 5yrs (i think) after thats what I would be trying to justify. However if you are going to use it regularly give it a bit more practice. Its a good skill to have but not to waste.
  12. Iseki front 4wd seal from iseki £39 each. Local seal and bearing distibutor £5. Same goes for all iseki parts it seems. I ranted to Ransomes simms and Jeffries the UK distributor online through the contact form and explained that the after sales pricing puts me off from buying this brand in the future etc. Sent the email on october the 13th 2011. Still not heard back. Email acknowledgement from them below. Having struggled to find ready accessible dealer info for iseki. I eventually found your site. I have downloaded the pdf files for the iseki tf321 which we have, It is leaking both front seals on the axle pivot points.Part no 1614-433-002-00. Thank you for putting these valuable resources online. Due to not finding dealer info I tried local bearing and seal distributors who could only supply seals 1mm out from the original part for £7 each. Finally today, Through our local dealer cherrys of north frodingham I find the seals are in my opinion excessively expensive at £39 each, Is this really the price we have to pay for an unessasarily bizzare sized original part. I see no reason why the castings couldn't of been 1mm larger etc. This practice also occurs with kubota another japanese manufacturer I understand, It would make me purchase non japanese machinery in the future as a captive market is not future proof, if companys disappear or get acquired by larger cooperations at a later date that no longer intend supporting the products. I hope you can help in explaining and justifying these prices At the end of their email the following statement! "Please expect to be contacted within 5 working days." Still not heard. Who Cares?
  13. I have same saw, It tends to leak oil if left in a warm place, a vehicle for example on a hot day. I try to keep it less full of oils and fuels in storage. Also I use veg based oil which I think is less stable than mineral oil. I imagine if it is stored with a full tank, liquid being the only none compressable form of matter its got to release somewhere, whereas air/gas is the most compressable form of matter. Hope this makes sense, and yes a fantastic saw.
  14. The royal botanical gardens in scotland are excellent, Dawcyk, Benmore and Logan are very contrasting. I liked Edinburgh the least as its more urban. I need space and realise it more as I get older. Well worth the visit.
  15. I used to fancy the idea of taking the central leader out of an oak tree and training the sideshoots out horizontally to support the floor of a treehouse then train upwards for the wall beams. Never had the opportunity to do it in a secure location. Long term ideas but worthwhile.
  16. To think gas was burnt off as a waste product once. Now a rising fuel/energy in cost. Somehow the concept of a yard full of timber " You've got loads of it , I only want a bit of it"remains, and the you get free wood mentality. We burn the rubbish that no one burns ourselves. Yet this chap practically counters his own argument. Time and fuel now equals ££££££££s. Machinery/equipment running costs. etc. I'd go with Andy collins Idea. Take a few days to settle gather thoughts. I assume alot of people won't assume its you. You right an informative article on firewood processing. Or get someone to do it. (An arbtalk comp!) Acknowledge there are rogue merchants. It will counteract the negative publicity. With your name on the end. But the fact he wants to gossip/slander where he got it from aint good. But solicitors are the only real winners in such cases. But if someone went to see the pile and ask who supplied. I doubt it would be counted as evidence. Hope this gets corrected publicly.
  17. Heres larger I hope.
  18. Classic sweet little tree in a pot "That will look good there" with no long term thinking scenario. Is my eyesight failing or is there an idiot stood right underneath it, in front of the building at the left of the tree?
  19. Postcode or location Steve?
  20. Have you tried a little heat if possible, The weld heat may help. Sometimes Ive reshaped the head square and suceeded. Still an infuriating waste of time, Maybe if the head came off and the pump you could get the stud remover on. I 2nd agg221. He typed faster!
  21. Can they do any decernt tricks on their BMXs or are they total wasters?
  22. If its a robust chipper, I don't see a problem. My bearcat 8 inch chipper didn't do many road miles (probably less than 50 before the A frame cracked. but shaking and swinging around on linkage cannot be good for them. It won't harm the tractors though its less than half capacity. Put more info on or even pictures, then you will get over peoples experiences and opinions.
  23. I think up to 5 cubic metres of timber per quarter = 3 months is allowed.
  24. Wow a rare error in your favor error from the dept of zero error tolerance. I passed Class 1 never did Class 2. It was 16 years ago, before the money making training schemers arrived:thumbdown: first full time job was on a 4 wheeler tipper going forward was fine but I automatically tried to reverse an artic trailer a few times on the first day. Maybe your mate knows storys of foled artics from Rigid drivers.
  25. J.A.Cox Based in east yorkshire perhaps worth a ring as they specialize in UK Ireland and Agricultural, price unknown though! Farm machinery haulage - Driffield | J A Cox & Son Ltd
