  1. Always wanted to see those Planes. Only 15 miles down the road and haven't done so yet.
  2. My thoughts exactly. IMO the vast majority of hat rack reductions are carried out by either improperly/untrained or lazy tree surgeons. It takes a bit more effort and time to do a proper reduction but the end result is a more natural looking tree which will respond much better to the work. The biggest compliment is when a client says "you would not know that the tree has been worked on". Your pictures of the Lime would be a great educational tool for clients that think harder reductions = more value for money.
  3. Nice work on the Lime Tony, should come back nicely. I was asked to reduce this large Plane recently to reduce weight and minimise risk of failure as it has a large cavity in the trunk. What a pain it was!! Virtually all branches got hung up, and the dust was horrendous! Sorry about the after pic - it was getting dark by the time we finished.
  4. why oh why did I waste days doing my 30/31 when Bob teaches you it in 30 seconds! A gob cut "No more than two thirds the way through the tree"!!!!!!!!!!
  5. Anyone knows when the fault was corrected as i got a new one from jonsie only last week.
  6. If your nuts are too low the birds wont like it as the pussy's are within easy reach.
  7. I have a couple of old pairs kicking around. They would be size 46 which I think is about 11.5 and probably aren't water-tight any more but you would be welcome to them if you want them. Ed.
  8. Mister solutions website has all manuals available online. Can be quite difficult to find on their website - follow this: From homepage select third tab down on the left hand side "Stihl chainsaws, brushcutters, etc" From the drop-down list select Stihl Chainsaws. Scroll down and select your saw model. You'll find a link here to the parts lists.
  9. Yes, i did think about both of these when it was happening today. The sprocket is a bit worn but not the worst that i've used. The chain did look a bit dry and has probably had it's last sharpen. So I think a new chain and sprocket and while the sprocket is off I will have a look at the oil pump. Fingers crossed, that should sort it. Many thanks all.
  10. Anyone knows why this happens?
  11. Seriously tho, trackers seem a good investment. I would like to protect three or four bits of machinery. Would be very interested to know the best produce/service and rough costs.
  12. I've looked at most of the treads on this over the past months and they all tend to be 50:50 for and against. Haven't got a 201 yet as I'm manageing to keep my 200's going at the moment but I do like the recessed exhaust (less burnt trousers). Dont understand the scabbard tho - anyone using one and keeping the scabbard on as they pull it up the tree?
  13. yes, my dad does the same - these last two wet days he has run a load of scap in which gives him his days money and then spends the rest of the day in the yard splitting wood. He spoke to a policeman the other day that reckoned you need a special licence to carry scrap. He has a WCL already. Going to look into it with the Envir Agency. Thinking about it, it may be a good way to cut down the metal thefts. If you remove the cash side from the business and everyone dealing with a scrapyard requires a licence then all you have to do is remove licences from anyone caught with stolen metal.
  14. 34459-call-spade-spade-they-theives Sorry - don't know how you link to a tread.
  15. Yes, I think we are being racist. These poor traveller folk - we've breeched their human rights by arresting and detaining them. After all, they were only doing what has been a tradition in their culture for hundreds of years. And we don't think of all the good that they do. All the cleaning up that they do when people carelessly leave metal lying around. The toxic lead on church rooves. Just think of how many lives they have probably saved by going out of their way to knock on peoples doors and inform them of the tree that is about to fall down. We should all give them some slack.....................................and a trapdoor!
  16. On my ipad i have tree sketch and leafsnap which are ok as they are free - wouldn't pay money for them. Trees of Britain is pretty basic. Been considering Site Survey for measuring tree height - have a look at that. Ed.
  17. I've alway used Stihl two stroke oil. It's always been Red except for once when it was green. Can somebody tell me what the difference is (except for the colour).
  18. The professional arborist will advise the client. Most tree owners won't know all the options. For instance, quoted for a job this morning; client had planted, some years ago, a Thuja close to his house. The tree is now tall and straight and at gutter level and he wanted it felled. I advised that another option for this particular species of conifer is to reduce hard and maintain as a large shrub. He didn't realise that that was an option but still wanted it felled - fair enough. There are always options, thin rather than reduce, fell and replace with a more appropriate species rather than top&lop. Personally, I could not bring myself to putting a saw into a beautiful specimen tree but thats just me. I love trees as well as loving tree work, it seems to me sometimes that the majority of tree surgeons just like the work and the money in their pocket and will do what is necessary to get it there as fast as possible. Oh, and a proper reduction is a reasonable practise in the right situation.
  19. Well said! I would walk away too. I'm not going to turn into one of the tree butchers that I detest.
  20. Dimensions, for those that asked.

    Ramps

you dont need 3metre ramps. Mine are about 2 metres (rampco) and if i'm loading it on my todd I use a small hand winch and a strop attached to the headboard of the truck. The winch is the type you might use to load a small boat onto a trailer, it's lightweight and only cost me about £20. It takes me about 2 minutes to set up and get it onto the truck. I'll take a pic of the set-up next time I take the grinder out.
  22. I use invoice2go on the ipad. You can buy a version for the desktop that you can then sync your ipad to but I think that the PC version costs about £70 a year. Answer to questions: Yes Yes No Yes Yes Dont think so.
  23. And one more question. What sort of price would you expect to get. I know "length of a bit of string" comes to mind but is £50 for over a ton and half of 2ft diameter Elm reasonable? Whats this piece worth. A Walnut that I took down three days ago. (other soft drink brands are available)
  24. I'd like to know what timber is worth keeping rather than cut up into logs. On the occasions that I have offered trees to timber merchants its either the wrong sort, not worth the trip to collect from site, not straight enough, heart woods wrong - not central, too many branch collers on the trunk, etc, etc. So what do they want? - species, length & diameter would be helpful in the future. Thanks.
  25. Possibly not a joke. My dad has told me a few times about how they used gelignite to blow apart stumps in the 60's/70's, including one time when they thought the boss had gone up with it.
