  1. What kind for kit are you after?
  2. I've got one. They are a good saw and as said, big saws don't normally get used too much. I don't think that they are any heavier than a 880. If your looking for ideas of what to offer, i'd go in at £400, hopefully you'll get the discount down to £350. If it's in reasonable condition you could get £500 on ebay.
  3. All of your opinions are much appreciated. There definitely was already a bank there as the fence in the background is at the road level. So i'm guessing partial excavation plus some leveling of the soil on this side of the tree once the wall was in place. The fungi seem to be only around the wall so the theory of feeding on dysfunctional root sounds a good one. Think I will recomend monitoring for now.
  4. I'd say that the walls is around 2+1/2 ft. There is some root flare but not as much as I would expect so I think possibly a bit of both.
  5. Possibly, but they are growing through the oak sleepers, way below the mulch bed level. Not visible on the picture as the client hacked them of when they appears so that his kids didn't play with them.
  6. Help please - i'm confused. At a regular clients today doing annual tidy up. He has a mature Sycamore which has been showing gradual decline of the crown over the last couple of years. There was major landscaping of the garden sereral years ago which must have kicked the tree in the nads (if it had any). Hopefully i've attached pictures of the fungi which has popped up at numerous places around the rootzone. My first thought was Honeyfungus. but no partial veil and a yellowy flesh of the stem makes me doubt it. second thought was sulpher tuft but I thought that was purly saprophytic. Any help much appreciated.
  7. I'd definitely go with Art. I used the Grillon for seven years but replaced it this year with a positioner. Great compact device that is just as good as a Grillon and a swivel positioner makes it better. What really hacked me off about the Grillon was that Petzl insists that it has to be used with their rope (£35+VAT for 3metres!) for it to pass a LOLER test.
  8. Probably stating the obvious but: - model number on a metal plaque with rivets = very old. - 0** models on sticker = old. - MS*** models = newer. As already said, it all depends on how hard a life the saw has had. Just keep in mind when looking on ebay for saws that sellers can make them look a tidy saw by steam cleaning and/or putting newer bars/brakes/side covers on. I would try and zoom in on the parts that are less likely to be replaced like the side/top handle. Any saw thats had hard use will have plenty of nicks out of the rubber. As soon as you can afford to, buy new, it often costs less in the end.
  9. Looks very similar to a Gano found on one of my clients trees - can you confirm? Also, I think that the circum- at bh was 385cm. Do you think this would be of interest to the Woodland trust tree hunt?
  10. Hi Wil, Saffron Walden is a bit out of my area. But if you get nothing better, I could give you the details of someone South-East of Cambridge (approx 13miles from SaffWald) who would likely take them. Ed
  11. Had to get a County Couty Judgement once before, which was a waste of my time and money as the guy turned out to be a serial limited company starter. I've ofter wondered about doing this. I've got a debt owing for a few days of hedge reduction/trimming in the gardens of a million+ house (anyone else find that it's the richest that think they can haggle/shaft you). But whats the come back from tipping chippings/hedgecuttings. Could you get done for fly tipping as it's not the original waste that was removed from their grounds? What do you think the Police responce would be when called? The last thing I want to do is to be made to clear up the mess made infront of the people that owe me money.
  12. Only done it the once and I still don't think I was at fault. Received the job spec from foreman "fell Ash tree at address". Went to that address. No Ash in the front garden. Only one Ash in the back garden so took it down. Was then told later that it was one across the road from the house. How am I supposed to know that!
  13. Agreed - here are the local registered tip sites local to Cambridge & Huntingdon in order of cost (lowest first): AWO - Ramsey Heights, Huntingdon, PE26 2RU, 07753 786200 Huntingdon Recycling - Ellington, Huntingdon, PE28 0AE, 01480 810431 Mick George - St Ives, Huntingdon, PE27 4YQ, 01480 498099 Donarbon - Waterbeach, Cambridge, CB25 9PG, 01223 861010
  14. 1st October would be good for me and it would give us time to drum up some interest.
  15. Huntingdon Recycling will take chip or brush but don't take any trunk wood in on the load (over 6 inch) or they will sting you £70 odd rather than £32+vat.
  16. If we're talking Saturdays. I can do 10th September or 1st October.
  17. September is fast approaching, is there any update on this possible tour? Cheers.
  18. Just different species. The one with abundant sprouts is the Common Lime (Tilia x europaea). Without could be Tilia cordata.
  19. I've bagged myself a place as one of the climbers but need to get my Kit Loler inspected before the 7th September. Anybody know of any inspectors near Cambridge that I could use?
  20. Congrats on passing. I really wanted to do the Tech cert but now that it's been revised to a level 4 and the price has gone up to well above £3k, I'm not sure that I can afford the money or the massive amounts of out-of-class study time. I could get in an awful lot of short courses/seminars for that kind of money. Interested to hear opinions tho.
  21. Recently looked at a Cherry tree that’s situated in a lawned area in the communal gardens for a block of flats that I do work for. The Cherry has quite a spare leaf covering (probably less than 50%) but no major dead wood and no obvious signs of fire blight, bacterial canker or fungal fruiting bodies. So, do you think it is worth trying to give it a nutrient feed to try and help it? I’ve not had much experience with this kind of thing so any advice would be greatly appreciated. There is a bit of intervain chlorosis and some leaf curl from the sides. Question: • How and what to apply. • How long to expect to see results. • Can treatment of lawns affect trees? • Has anyone tried applying sugar into the root zone to give a tree a quick boost? Heard this at a Dr Glynn Percival seminar once. Does it need to be any special sugar or would caster work just as well? Thanks in advance, Ed.
  22. Or drying off soggy clothes around the camp fire on the Saturdsy morning. Turned into an expensive weekend for me. Key snaped in the fuel cap while I was filling up at Reading services on the way home. £120 for a locksmith callout!
  23. Never figured out how to use those black things. Buy a proper piston stop. Only £3 of ebay - Item number: 140566886012
  24. I sure that there were more than 12 tents. May be that how many actually paid. I'd like to thank Timbertim and slackmygirdle for supplying me with drinks around the camp fire on Friday night. There was only so much I could pack on the bike and cider didn't quite make my essentials list. Cheers.
