  1. When you see the first house martins and swifts of the year. Already seen the House Martins which is incredibly early for them.
  2. If we are tree felling on the trailways at the back of properties we are normally offered teas, coffees and sometimes even cakes. The last big job we did we were all given a box of beer each (only a fridge pack). We were really chuffed as we werent expecting it. Sadly the landowner of the fields where the trees were overhanging didnt want too much done to the trees as the were obscuring his veiw of the "poor" people houses. So we reduced them back to the boundary. The trees look odd but we coronetted them up so they would become monoliths.
  3. Just copied and pasted it into google Janey and damn your good. Exactly the same leaves.
  4. Dont worry m8. Most council guys are tarred with the same brush. Although i work for a council, we are different to the highways guys. We work in all weathers and will not stop until the job is complete.
  5. Been stump cutting this week with the carbide chain and it well worth the money. The only issue is to sharpen them you have to send them off. The chipper chain is ok. It keeps it edge better than a semi chisel whilst stump cutting. One of the stumps had a nice big lump of railway iron growing through the middle. Made me jump and the colleague who was just down the slope from me. Never seen him run so fast down the embankment.
  6. Stab vests are last thing i think tree surgeons/arborists are going to want to be wearing as well as chainsaw trousers. Hope his has a swift recovery. It just shows that anything can happen.
  7. Oi!! We got aint got many yellow ones left. Got mainly orange now. Got some bright green ones and even some pink ones too. Whoever wears the pink one has to act "camp" all day. It flipping hilarious.
  8. We have both Stihl Chisel and scratcher toothed clearing saw blades. The chisel tooth ones are easier to sharpen but the scratchers keep their edges better. Depends really on what you want. Chisel cuts quicker but as soon as it dinks a stone the edge is gone.
  9. LOL. Its normally ivy band and monitor. Im sorry but as soon as the ivy leaves drop i survey the tree for an hour or so (nesting birds, etc) then we drop it. I have ivy banded a tree and within a week its fallen over. Rather worrying when happens especially when the tree is in full leaf when you are ivy banding it.
  10. LOL. He would be inudated with calls from every Tom, Dick and Harry. He gets 5 texts a day about overtime. Last thing he wants is 30 phone calls a day about injuries especially when he has been on nights.
  11. When i get my new camera i shall take some pics of some really ivy clad ones. That would make even the best arborist think twice about it.
  12. Here's one for the game. What species is which? One is Sycamore. One is Norway Maple. Which is which?
  13. Handy when if one of your relatives is part of the NHS. When/if we have a serious accident i always get hold of my old man after we have dialled 999. Because he has been a paramedic for over 30 years he has seen almost every injury imaginable. So nothing really surprises him.
  14. Acer pseudoplatanus - Sycamore And i typed that one out off by heart not by googling.
  15. Pine:hmmmm2:
  16. If working in middle of nowhere tell them nearest road access point, nearest house and if air ambulance is required tell them to look for a vehicle next to large tree, reservoir, etc.
  17. Gas gun. Preferably Propane one. I've set up Propane + Oxy-acetylene mix ones out in farmers fields and on one of the big local estates but it would be way too loud for residential use (Parked old 110 next to it and blew out all windows).
  18. Wots the reason for HC removal?
  19. We used scare tactics for our shipping container. We had a Nitroglycerin sticker and No Smoking, No Naked Flames, No Static and No electronic tools to be used within 15 metres. It worked until a container was placed next to ours and they had a little genny outside undercover.
  20. 362 now all sorted. cheers for help. I tweaked the fuel screw to stop it from stalling when we apply throttle. The carbide chain was brilliant. I hit several lumps of stone that were embedded in the stools but kept on cutting. The last stump i cut at the end of the day had a wacking great lump of railway cast iron running up through the middle. That completely took the edge off the carbide tipped chain and blunted the chipper chain on the 341. I had to use plastic wedges to remove the blooming thing
  21. My top 5 1 - The Expendables 2 - Rambo (2008) 3 - Schindler's List 4 - Saving Private Ryan 5 - FMJ
  22. Cheers that'll be job one to do first thing as going stump cutting with the 362 and 341. Got a chipper chain on the 341 and the carbide tipped one on the 362. Will let you know how the gauze works and how the carbide tipped one performs.
  23. We still have troops "active" in the Rhineland in Germany and a couple of thousand over in Vietnam and between North and South Korea. I understand the eastern countries. But why in the Rhineland? There is a democracy in Germany not a dictatorship.
  24. Just reminded me that it was on.
