    veteran tree oak

Ayo! I have an oak at work, 150yrs old minimum, likely 200+. It isn't having the best of luck. It's been smacked by lightning and now there's springs popping up all over the place and half of its rooting area has been severely waterlogged. There is very little live crown now. There is much deadwood in the remaining crown. It was reduced approx 5 years ago. Before I got a say in anything, it was mown right up to the stem. I imagine there has been some damage as it used to be carried out by a tractor mounted batwing mower. Noone knew any better. I mowed here too so I'm as guilty as anyone. I can't see any damaged surface root but I imagine that the tractor has caused damaged sub-surface. It is currently host to Ganoderma applanatum and Fistulina hepatica. Now things have changed. I've changed the culture from removal of deadwood so that people can lounge around underneath to allowing the grass to grow underneath to discourage it. It's now 2 foot deep in buttercup and still really really wet. I wanted to get half of the RPA mulched with oak chip obtained from some footpath crownlifting. I daren't put it on ground so wet though. I will obtain photos of the current crown next week but here is the tree today. Is there anything I can do to promote survival?

  13. Tooth Fairy must have been pretty generous.
  14. Looking forward to busting through this once my course has finished! Unfortunately veteran trees must play second fiddle to propagation n that.

  16. Is it worth me hassling the TO then do you think, to ask how it has been allowed?
  17. I wandered into a porn shoot at my work. Was proper readers wives material too. I was like 'got a school group coming here in about 10 mins so hurry up innit'.
  18. Hi, An associate has raised concerns that some TPO'ed oaks in the field behind his house are about to be crownlifted by 3m. A hedgerow has been grubbed out already (although not one I believe would come under the Hedgerow Regs). There are no current access points near these trees. I'm thinking that it is 'possibly' to improve tractor access when flailing or something innocent like that. On the other hand, I'm one of lifes pessimists and I have my suspicions the intention is to divide the field up into paddocks. I have looked on the local councils planning portal and confirmed that the trees form part of a group TPO. I couldn't find any applications regarding these trees. The tree officer has told my associate that he has agreed the works. There are no other planning applications apart from a refused one in 2008 to turn into into a cricket pitch. My questions are, should there not be a paper trail? If not, are tree officers allowed to agree works without making public the plans? These aren't in my area and I haven't seen them 'in the flesh' but it strikes me as totally the wrong thing to do. It's the wrong time of year and it will be detrimental to their form, not to mention depriving them of their latter-years insurance policy. The trees in question are those at the back of the photo: Thanks for looking.
  19. Nasty! Good luck getting yourself up and running again!

    Parkrun

Yo, I have one of these at the park I manage in Havant. They started about a year ago with around 40 runners and now they are hitting 170 a week. Proper carnage. Not run it myself yet, always seem to be arm-deep in toilets or getting harassed by fishermen. I'll run it one day though!
  21. The volume of assignments is proper fun but is a trade-off for relying on exams to go right on the day. The coursework submission dates are guidelines. Stray from them and you can end up swamped. The teachers are good. The library is good. They sometimes neglect to serve carrots in the eating place though which makes me sad.
