  1. Hey Arbtalkers Just back in the woods game after a few years walling and generally keeping woodchip free. Have the above machine, but it wont tune. Tried the basic throttle cable adjust, but it continues to overrun. Can the ems be rebooted somehow or is it a techy job? Hasnt done any work in quite a while. Thanks in advance Tom
  2. Im near York with a Lucas mill but Im not a guru.
  3. Bump...Holding another spooncarving day on 6 August. https://workingwallsandwoods.co.uk/2016-course-programme/ Still a few places left.
  4. I'm holding a spoon carving day in South Yorkshire (close to M1 J38) for beginners and improvers - 2 July! Great private woodland site - off the beaten track. Lunch and use of all relevant tools included in the price Check out the website or drop me a pm!
  5. Have a look at the latest deals on Logosol. I've no affiliation to them, but started with an M7 years ago and it did me fine. Good company to deal with, and their kit is very well engineered.
  6. Yes ^^ The burrs are too strong for that job. They're more for shape-making than flattening. You'll end up with low spots. A decent smoothing plane can achieve pretty good end results with a sharp blade, correctly set. With dry timber, you get a close-to-mirror finish that sanding will never give.
  7. Best gloves for logging in anyone?
  8. If they're true wrought iron made by hammer and forge, any grit blasting will damage the mill scale, which is a protection against some rust. Zinc and powder will look fine for a time, and may last you out. Wrought conservation usually plump for red lead undercoat and a good topcoat, and expect to get the wire brush out and repaint every few years.
  9. Anywhere I can see / get parts diagrams for Stihl machines - specifically FS460 / MS 441. Got some fiddly bits to get and can't find any diagrams. Help much appreciated....
  10. Nee Nor Nee Nor....Screeech....<<Doors slam on motor>> "Oi, Arbtalk member stihlmadasever. We're the Right-On Police, and you can't categorise Asians as ignorant shopkeepers. Cut it aaaht!" Only saying
  11. What do people think about this splitting up of larger woodlands into small parcels? Strikes me this often leads to poor outcomes for woodlands. Drainage doesn't get managed as a whole; forestry objectives in any management can be neglected; prices for woodland get inflated artificially. What are the benefits?
  12. "i liked it so much I bought the company!"
  13. 8" x 8" posts x 10' Curved crook for the hanging stile and a tapered top rail. Mortice and tenon joints and stainless bolts where needed. I wouldn't make from green oak because of all the movement thereafter if they're 12 foots. Either seasoned or tanalised softwood.
  14. Sorry Harvey It's all a bit ad hoc on the promotions front. We'll do it again next year and put something out much earlier. Might even run one in the autumn. Have a look at our website http://www.workingwallsandwoods.co.uk where there is a list of courses on weekends. Or contact me and I'll out you on our mailing list. Cheers Tom
  15. Holding a Wood Fair tomorrow at Cawthorne Park, near Barnsley. Close to J38 on M1. Small affair - spoons, bowls, games and stories for children, timber framing, drystone walling, cob pizza oven etc https://www.facebook.com/workingwallsandwoods/?ref=bookmarkshttp://
  16. I think a Stihl 441 would do a better job. Americans ought to look at themselves before building any wall or banning any race or religion. In the United States in 2015 on 209 of 365 days there was at least one shooting each day which left at least four people injured or dead; i.e., more days with mass shootings than not. (Source: New York Times) Anyone on here laughing at Trump when he says women should be punished for having abortions? Oh he's so funny, some of the things he says. The most unfortunate casualty of terrorism is common sense. Fear fuels fascist momentum, and then we're really in the ****. And no paddle. And it's goodnight from him.....
  17. Do a few spoons now and then. Thinking about getting to Spoonfest this year, if I remember to get tickets before they ll sell out. I stick to birch, sycamore and cherry in the main. Glad it's not my living though....
  18. Older rangers suffer with fifth gear problems and rear diff / axle challenges (don't ask how I know...) but otherwise are pretty bombproof. Comfier than a Hilux for me and cheapish at the pump. Look out for a good one but have some cash set aside for repairs
  19. Chestnut food safe oil is OK, but is mineral based. Raw flax seed oil doesn't go rancid - it's my go-to oil for wooden spoons
  20. Well done Dave. It's called karma. Now pass it on with another good deed and so it goes on. Here's one - our plumber came round this morning on his day off to do a little fix. No charge. Back next month to sort the kitchen we're fixing and wrote the date on our calendar on the way out. Kindness, like ignorance, is infectious.
  21. Think he's right about much of the "feel" of public spaces being usurped by companies and made corporate. I don't visit hospital often, thankfully, but last time I was there it had the look of a shopping mall. In my own city - York - the church owns a great deal of "public" space. It's £15 to visit our own cathedral and we have beggars on the street unable to find a council-run shelter. (Getting into different territory there...) Self writes some good stuff for the Evening Standard Will Self: Give the freedom of the city to our urban explorers | Comment | London Evening Standard - here about urban "place-hackers". Reminds me of a thread started by someone who wanted to climb a council-owned tree covered in ivy. Why should he have to worry? When we have our revolution, people will think differently about their entitlements to where we live and breathe.
  22. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/81477-how-has-moron-survived-wild-so-long.html?highlight=fogle It's a repeat programme from 2014 - moronic but they're looking happy. Maybe they hiked in with a big supply of files and chain
  23. Cult Pens is a good place to look - wide selection of ink pens. Sailor, Kaweco, TWSBI are all good Japanese makes, as are Pelikan and Platinum (£££). Calligraphy's good for the soul, if you have the time. Don't forget some good ink from Diamine, Mont Blanc, Herbin (the inks themselves end up being pretty collectible). Andy's Pens site has often a good range of pre-owned pens for the connisseur....
  24. Sika will be difficult to manage by culling, because they are practically nocturnal and they are clever at concealing themselves. Manpower for culling may be more costly than tubes or fencing. You could try a variety of approaches. I'm convinced willow planting works to give the deer other browsing options. It seems to be more palatable than oak... I've used small coupes of fencing to good effect where cost is an issue. Is there a Coillte yard or office nearby where they might have a pile of used deer fencing that could be reused? For Sika you need heavy duty fencing. If your woodland is big enough, consider running a couple of wide, curving rides through in two directions if you havent any open spaces, so that you can create a central glade (maybe with good willow browsing) to provide a good spot for regular culling. I do some forestry work in Kerry and have seen the deer population rise considerably in the past years - appears to be no coherent plan for a sensible cull.
