  1. I understood it's a notifiable weed, so landowner should do something about it. Root barrier wont stop a few seeds popping over the fence, and will need to be very deep if plant is established. Quickest route may be to get go-ahead to spray, spray, spray.
  2. Hi SallyRZ It's not the most beautiful tree ever, from the last pics. Be glad it's dead. (Doesn't look like a drill hole to my eyes, and wouldn't have killed it outright by injecting there.) You can have it taken out and replaced with something prettier. And a specimen guaranteed to cheese off your curtain-twitching neighbour. I'm sure there will be many suitable suggestions from the Arb Bretheren.... I might go for pyramid hornbeam, carpinus betulus fastigiata, to kick off.
  3. Have a look at the Dowling Stoves site. The Sumo (wood only) is a fine piece of kit. All welded steel, no bricks or ropes or other wearing bits. Not to everyone's taste to look at, but the best stove I've ever had for heat return on wood. ZigZag is multi-fuel, and will heat a cathedral.
  4. Fiskars X27 here - light but very strong.
  5. Another consideration is final product. What are you intending to make with your wood. If it's joinery timber you might want to think about a swing arm mill. Have a look at the Turbosawmill site - it's Jake Peterson's new-ish venture. NZ based, but basic kit is very well engineered and versatile. Big slabber option, 13hp unit is excellent value, trailer kit if required.
  6. that Welmac polish made logger, storing piles of brash once cut until they are dry enough is a pain and waste of energy doing the job twice. Green wood can be logged into their bags and air dried - no double handling required. A good machine for recovering more value from what would be waste. I've no affiliation to the company. Default chipping always seems a waste of energy to me.
  7. What about a Welmac branch logger? Turn your "waste" into saleable, bagged granny logs and garden mulch. Around £3K new last time I looked:thumbup1:
  8. Or get a decent Silky pruning saw / Bahco bowsaw and an old billhook/axe. No need for fuel, PPE, oils, spark plugs, spares etc.
  9. More than raise concerns. We should be telling OP to put the saw in the shed and get something smaller till he knows more about cutting. So, put that saw in the shed and go get something smaller, along with basic training, PPE and so on. If I recall basic felling starts with a max 15 inch bar...
  10. Garlon and Icade. Works a treat and cheap compared to revisiting time and again. There is no forestry approval for either, which doesn't help....
  11. Oh great, another which saw is best thread. Glad I logged in. And , no , I didn't have to read it or write this, but I just could help myself.
  12. As above. We wrote our own - pretty straightforward.
  13. Get a working Bedlington Jon. Brighter than a Border Lakeland, and nicer round the house IMO.
  14. New trucks to me are just a pure waste of cash, however they're bought. There are plenty of brilliant used vehicles on the market that, with a lick of paint and some decals can be as eyecatching as any new truck. New stuff is often vanity. Spend your money on something more worthwhile - booze, women, travel, whatever.
  15. Nice bit of larch here to keep the hot water ticking over. Due a sharp frost tonight so we're nicely toasty here.
  16. The Power of Arbtalk! Up pops a message from Sam at Silver Oak Tree Surgery to say they're removing sycamores a mile or so from my site, and would I like their chip? Many thanks again Sam - fresh, leaf-free chip - perfect.
  17. Thanks Mark - Logosol guys are helpful, I know. Norwood package adds up to almost Peterson money when you chuck it all in, and there's a lot more to go wrong. It's on my shortlist.
  18. Bit like the helmet / gloves / boots threads....but here goes.... I'm looking to buy a mill to use to build larch-clad buildings - modular sheds, workshops, etc. Currently using a Logosol M8 and big Stihl (so I don't do much milling!) Have had a go with both Lucas and Peterson swing arm mills, which seem useful tools. Haven't Woodmizer budget. Would like mill to be semi-portable. Am I missing something? Does anyone have sales leads? Lad on Arbtrader with Lucas didnt reply, so his must have gone in the blink of an eye. Should I buy new or s/h? Thanks in advance
  19. Thanks Waz77. Just packing the tarpaulins.... Another bump, for any remaining Yorkshire treefolk hiding out there
  20. Rich, coming from a French sailor. Zut alors ducky!
  21. A low-key affair, looking at rural craft skills, wood products, access to woodland for enterprise. Avoid the Easter crowds if you're in South / West Yorkshire Wood Fair Poster Low Res.pdf
