  1. Anyone whittle the odd spoon? Here's one of mine...
  2. Hi After some ash in 4m lengths for a milling / steam bending job. North Yorkshire or within a reasonable distance. 6" min dia - enough to make 40 x 2' x 1" x 158" Cheers
  3. I've asked him if I can go for a look but he's not got back to me. I'm near York and keen to see it, but he's not picked up the phone....Not seen this machine working locally - haven't a clue how it's turned up round here. Looks well-used though. What's a fair price if it isn't a bag of s***e?
  4. The picture's called "fstihl.jpeg" so I'm plumping for fake. If it's done a few hundred hours without exploding then it was probably a bargain....
  5. Hard to kill. I've done it over a lot of seasons by repeatedly bruising and applying Grazon, or RoundUp. Whip it with a rod so it tears but isnt cut off and then dose. Repeat annually, again and again.
  6. I've been milling 7 inch wide boards for benches in larch and making em up straight away - at the stump. Haven't had too much trouble. I'd say oak was a different story, unless you can find some that's all heartwood and waste the slabwood.
  7. As all above, but longer term look at core strength and Alexander technique. Some really good posture exercises helped me after a very bad back accident. Work on core and walk tall. Watch reliance on too many meds and see an osteo / physio regularly till it's right.
  8. Speak to Spudulike on here. He may have something on the shelf worth having. Sorted me a fine old Husky for rough jobs for less than your budget. Other secondhand saw purveyors are available of course. I'd not recommend Makita personally, for saws. Avoid Evilbay too, IMO.
  9. Seems you've turned up a web cul de sac and found you're in the wrong place here Daniel Matthews. Surely it's a bit too sweaty and dusty here for your slick global vision, where Chinese peasants are grateful for your patronage and insanely happy Malaysians bask in your waste heaps, gaily scavenging from your detritus. You wont win a lot of arb friends by promoting kiln-dried logs from Turkmenistan / wherever. You sound very friendly while you're trying wipe the floor with Muttley. I was told never to trust a grinning cat. "Just saying"
  10. £8 per cubic foot is usual round here for sawn larch. Don't do work for mates - you never make money. Be lucky:thumbup1:
  11. Micron Shop - Herbi 4 Herbi 4 with 5l backpack. Only need to mix 500 - 1000 mls at a time to do a morning's spraying. No nozzles to mess about with. Works every time for years and years. Just needs a set of good batteries and you're away. Just about to do a kilometer of new hedge, and it'll be like a nice country stroll.
  12. I've got a Viking orchard mower and it's about ok. Not brilliant, but ok. My Honda does fancy stuff and it's superb.
  13. Make sure you have a good, deep, friable soil for the plants to root into, with plenty of organic matter dug in to retain moisture. School grounds are notorious for having former buildings under them. Always do a few test pits (sorry if this is stating the obvious, but I found out the hard way once) Careful with some of the willows used for biomass - they grow quick and are pretty ugly. Salix viminalis and s.triandra are good varieties, if you can get them.
  14. Anyone fancy a job? Hello? Hello? Anyone.....?
  15. Still burning away here in damp old North Yorkshire. Nice bit of larch crackling away every evening to warm the bath water and dry the dogs / washing.
  16. We haven't put the bin out in about four years. Councils should give discounts for us wood-and-waste burners. Don't buy any plastic, but everything that will fit in the front of the stove gets burned. It's free heat and hot water. So long as you don't put nasties on, it's a great way to get rid of rubbish. (No painted stuff, no glued boards, no plastics etc) As China is currently producing about 6,000 million tonnes of greenhouse gases a year, you do wonder to some extent what's the point.
  17. If you have an old tyre lying around, fit your block inside that and your logs wont go flying off in all directions. Just walk round the job, swinging and chopping as you go.
  18. RemovALL 520 - 3.8 litres - Cirrus Systems Ltd Not cheap but used this on a fifties kitchen with eight layers of gloss - worked well.
  19. Swallows back in the dog kennels here in North Yorkshire - nearly three weeks later than last year. One pair where there were two pairs last year. Waiting for swifts and yellow wagtails.
  20. Subaru Forester pulls 1950kgs easily and well. Go forever. Petrol, but average 31 mpg. Great all-round car when not towing. Comfy. Cheap to insure. Excellent off road when well-shod and plated underneath. Steer clear of turbos and imports.
  21. Contact wants a few softwoods down in a wood adjacent a B road. Newcastle Emlyn way, I think. Anyone fancy it? pm
  22. I had a local dealer tell me it was no longer policy to supply straps and rivets (you know how they get lost out of the bag and you need the odd one now and again) - not safe for him to let me make my own chain. Thought it was a nice way of him earning a bit more cash....
