  3. hi steve , i hire in various ones when needed, love to own one but mrs (who wears the trousers) is after holiday home,,,,the manitou 526 turbo like above is by far my favorite,,,tried the buggyscope and sent it back straight away,,sinks on soft ground,,friends have merlos,,,and they rate em,,,,I will get one but reckon it`ll be the 526 turbo,,,,,,have also hired a jcb one,,,,nice but very bouncy,,,,
  4. i think ,big J has experience with all three types of machine, woodmizer/lumbermate and alaskan,, so I personelly appreciate his honest good reviews,,, I run a woodmizer Lt40(20yrs old) hydraulic,,,,and await his next chapter with a better mill,,,
  5. very good mate,,,,

  8. has to be a bigger an stiffer pole then? good luck,,,
  9. robin wood uses a traditional lathe ,and he turns big bowls, he uses a mandrel to wrap his leather rope around which gives more torque,,and a big larch pole, nobody said it was easy,,hence they moved on to the treadle lathe, then belt driven, then motor,,,if they could have used a motor they would have, !! i use both, mainly between centres on my pole lathe now adays! (rob copied his lathe from george laylies lathe which is in the reading rural life musuem).

  19. cutting and splitting? long day? think I want to employ you
  20. whats your local competetion? dont forget with a mill you need obviously,1/timber to mill, 2/a loader?forklift or tractor,3/ storage,,(you`ll be suprised how quick you fill the yard,) if you`ve got all that covered, and good contacts to sell the end product, then hey,,,sure beats office work, just not as consistant wages,,,,,speak to other tree surgeons, countryside services, ranagers etc, see if there interested , or go halfs on a mill?
  21. Went with trust today, knocked £330 off my new renewal quote from my previous insures...tis too easy just to renew,,,,,
  22. Hi mark let me know how you get on, in the same boat,,,,
  23. I agree, my lads saw up when they have a few hrs spare, or even on the job sometimes,
  24. its a good question,,,, we manage about 1m3 with a riko 11Ar spliter every 45 mins, if its nice rings under 18inch,,,,,,, from arb waste. I question buying in artic loads of straight firewood at £40 per ton,+ £10 per ton delivery, so a ton on average producing 1.5 cubic meters (presuming the timber was green when delivered)= I charge £80 per m3, so 1.5 m3 from the ton would return me £120,,,,after costs of,,,,,,,£50 wood, then add labour, storage(ie yard rent)fuel for delivery, cubic net bags, ,,I cant see it makes commercial sense unless you have a fancy bit of £15k kit,(processor) plus £10k worth of loader,,,,(which you need a return on) then i see why your m3 price must be £100 plus! I think people selling arb waste firewood can afford to charge less for the end product as we`ve usally been paid to remove it, but it takes longer than processor timber!
