  1. If you're a member of the Forestry Contracting Association they have a question check list that will give you a scoring as to employment status of a subby. It's quite detailed. Although not entirely the same as working for an arb company there are a lot relevant questions to establishing work status.
  2. Don't worry about it, as I said in my first post a month ago to you............ "Take plenty of notes and remember that you need to respond to the questions in the way Lantra wants them answered not how you think they should be answered. There are key words and phrases and some things that just need to be learnt pigeon style." There is a retake option at some of the centers. I think Arb Assoc run them as well as others. Give it another punt while its all still in you head.
  3. And don't forget a manhole lid when you're installing it so you can close the hole neatly afterwards.
  4. We put them in the ground 1000mm deep, 200mm dia, plastic sewer pipe. concrete in a nice sharp square hole with about .6m3 of concrete around it. The exact volume depends on the ground conditions. We use this up to 28ft height. Probably a bit over spec for a 20 ft tree.
  5. No probs, here you are. Had it made and tested by a local engineering company. Plated for 1000kg. I like the webbing over the jib for strength, two retaining pins to stop it coming off the forks and 2t hook and shackle on the nose. Here it is doing a trial lift.
  6. First big one of the season. First use of our new jib.
  7. A couple of mates were talking about these last night. Cheffins auctions have similar fairly regularly. Think most go for export. They make around £3500-5000 with cabs. I think there was about 10 at the last auction mostly 165 and 185's
  8. You are right, you must always wear googles or safety glasses when strimming in those sort of conditions. There all sorts of nasty parasitic organisms in dog mess. Be very careful.
  9. From memory it shrinks in to 950mm(the width of the cab ) and expands out to 1300. We ,ve also a 1ton yanmar that goes from 1000mm down to 760 mm so it fits thru a pedestrian gate or thru a standard door frame with the roll bar folded down.
  10. Here's our wee 2t Volvo with a bucket and toe combination. Easy moved between sites, expanding track which go down to 1m wide so it fits into tight spaces, will probably lift between 250-500kg depending on the reach. (And yes I know - a stupid place to leave a saw lying.)
  11. I think it is also important not to get to stuck just on a set hourly rate. As long as you are normally hitting your target hourly rate, what about looking at the job from as a high margin job or low margin. Some operation are more specialist and command a higher rate. For example hedge cutting may require less skill than high level crane job so price accordingly. If you have a high overhead set up then perhaps you need to apportion some of these overheads on the higher margin jobs and then you can be more competitive on jobs were price is more sensitive. I don't see why the fact we have loads of lovely machinery means that all our customers have to be burdened by this overhead unnecessarily, it should be paid for by the customers who benefit from them. It also means that a client starts to realise that your company can do every aspect of there work costed more accurately.
  12. I know what you mean but hold on, aren't we giving away our split logs a below market value. So once again we are undervaluing our selves.
  13. This is another key point - most trades make a margin on the product they supply on top of their labour input. Tree surgeons don't really have that option.
  14. You need to give Rodney at Essener Equipment a ring and get the Bank of Difflock cheque book out. Great bit of kit but expensive.
  15. Not picking holes but we were told it was not our job to recommend how to take the tree down so not to use comments like fell etc. the correct term was "remove" and then it was up to the contractor how he does that in a safe manner. That was with Chris Simpson.
  16. Take plenty of notes and remember that you need to respond to the questions in the way Lantra wants them answered not how you think they should be answered. There are key words and phrases and some things that just need to be learnt pigeon style. I found it is not all about what you know about trees its more about what the course wants you to know about trees if that makes sense. Got mine earlier this year, excellent course and very well delivered but it was a tight three days with plenty to learn.
  17. I still don't believe the hype about breathable. As far as I can see you either get wet from the rain outside or your own body fluids from inside if you are working in a jacket. Best bet is a change of clothes and a jet boil of coffee on a cold wet day.
  18. I wouldn't expect to pay no more than £3-5 per foot for good ones ex forest for Norway spruce. Not a great tree for decorating, branches too small to hold commercial lights. At that size they are still manageable by hand for putting up, if they are nicely trimmed they can make a fine hotel size tree. Pop it in one the extra large crinko? Self watering holder for indoor use or they,ll be bare in two weeks in the heat. Pines and needles website has them.
  19. I am always fascinated by process and transformation from one state to another. Excellent project. Had a look at their website, quite a project and client list. Nice one.
  20. Spot on, just thinking about taking it to the next level and linking the memory to the product. (I,m just jealous)
  21. You need to get those log sales graphics that you talked about now shes doing the firewood. It coming together as a nice wee quirky head turner.
  22. A few falling branches are nothing, we had a suspect device at the bottom of our road in Holywood yesterday and there was a lady trying to duck thru the warning tape and having a heated exchange with the police while the bomb disposal were doing their thing that she needed to get to her car to get to a hairdressing appointment. :scared1:
