  1. He's still not got that old thing back on the road then? Did he have Stretch with him when he worked with you? He's subcontracting now isn't he rather than getting his own work isn't he. Anyway from what you've said do you have a L200 crew cab? Just guessing:lol:
  2. Isn't it just. How long you been married then? I had Bailey working with me a couple of weeks ago. He's doing ok for himself now isn't he?
  3. You would not say that if you spoke to some of the guys i know!! Poor old me this, oh woe oh woe. You've never heard anything like it:lol:
  4. Ha ha yes of course i know them!! So if you worked for Maurice Fitch you know Bailey and Spokes then?
  5. Ha ha you nosey lot. In the day i work for the local housing association and in the evenings i'm batma.........ha ha no evenings and weekends do my own thing. Do you have much local work then Harry as i have never seen you about or do you not have a sign written van? I know a few of the local lads just thought i might have heard of you especially as i was from Norton and we used to knock about with one of the lads from Watford!! You're probably a lot younger than me:lol:
  6. So there isn't a lack of tree surgeons in Daventry and Northamptonshire!! I live and work in Daventry and i know of at least six tree surgeons in the Daventry area. I think we're over run rather than being short of them:lol:.
  7. Strange you should say about a good reason for working on a Sunday Mr Bullman. The only Sundays i ever seem to work, which are few and far between anyway, are for next to nothing as a favour for a friend or that special family member that only phones when they want something:lol:
  8. Not into it really. Have to keep one day for the family at least don't you?
  9. Like it Smith77. Jokes are great plus it's a nice way to split the guys up:lol:.
  10. It's handy sometimes isn't it? I traded firewood to buy carpets for my living room and i also paid for my puppy with firewood!! Cheap for me!!
  11. As i have said on another thread about this sort of thing, I listened to a gentleman on the radio that has been involved with other transactions that have happened regarding woodland. His point was that there are only two or three types of people that will buy woodland. Firstly those that care about their environment so obviously will be looking after it and then those that want it as an investment for the family avoiding inheritance tax so will take care as it is a long term investment for their own family and lastly those that buy it for an investment to sell on. These people have to look after it otherwise they'll lose money so i did have to rethink my original take on what i thought. What's the worst that can happen? They won't let them clearfell as a covenant will cover this and that is just scaremongering so the worst thing that will happen is that Joe public will be excluded from these woodlands with the mountain bikes and foot traffic that compact the ground. Perhaps there will be less litter and used tyres etc left strewn around for others to pick up, so perhaps this could be a good thing for the woods!! Although the sad thing is that the price of timber will be on the up so will this be another situation where they sell the 'gold' at the wrong time and lose out on a long term investment? At the end of the day it comes down to management as private companies will makemoney from the woodland so the FC perhaps should have looked at how things were being run.
  12. Love the one about the dog getting shot!!
  13. I bought a small one off the net. 30 tonne ram and it does vertical or horizontal. I use mine in the horizontal position most of the time i just find it easier that way. Anyway point of post is that i only have a 9hp engine to power my ram and it will run for the whole day non-stop (without lunch) on about a fivers worth of petrol! Only reason i mention is that if you're towing a big diesel lump around and if you're only doing arb waste is it worth using a big diesel lump? Just my thoughts!!
  14. Ha ha it's true John. When i was typing it i was thinking about a wood near me. If i owned it i think i would try to stop the public going in there!! Littered with rubbish from fast food resturants, tyres and other implements from sexual activities. Broken fences for access and dissused tents and Joe public think that is acceptable. Who would want people in there woodlands? I know if i had one they wouldn't be welcome!!
  15. You don't seem to have much luck with some of the people you work with do you from what i have read!!
  16. We use Timbrel. Expensive but we just paint it on and chip off home. Ideal!! Roundup is for wimps:lol:
  17. To be honest i think it's a difficult call. I was with you all the way until i heard a genleman explaining that the company he works for has been buying and selling woods for years with no difficulties. The points he raised were very valid. Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to put a covenant on the woodland before its sale to stop wholesale destruction as was said also he said if you were to buy a wood/forest why would you want to destroy it? Two types of people would buy woodland. Those that love the woods and those that invest. If it was bought as an investment you would take care of it to ensure you get the maximum return on it and if you care i think that says it all. I think i would tend to agree that the sale of the woodland isn't really on as it belongs to the British tax payer so we should have the right to use it whenever we like but there is two sides to every story.
  18.
  19. Exactly. Why waste your life worring about things you can't control. If it happens it happens and i'm sure it will do one day. Perhaps give the planet a well deserved break from us lot:lol:
  20. I'm afraid i'll have to disagree with this statement (obviously having more than my quota:lol:). I would just like to ask how you would feel when you get older to be told that there is no money left in the pot. Can't have your operation there's just no money. No pension! People are living longer and they want their pensions still, as they need to eat and live, and everyone was only allowed two kids (because Dean said:lol:) we no longer have enough money going in to pay for everyone. Sorry Mr Lofthouse we appreciate you paid in but join the queue for the payout. I actually agree that it will be a big problem but why worry about things you can't control?!!
  21. I would say that if you are going to price for a job like the hotel to be realistic about the pricing. If they want you to drop everything to go and work for them then i think that the price should reflect this. I appreciate what Chris is saying in this post but don't worry about everyone else. Work out your own overheads and arrive at your own price otherwise you could get the contract and then spend the year dropping everything for them losing other work and ruining everything you have already for next to nothing!! By the way i do my own work on the grounds for a few private clients and a factory unit and i think that between £25 and £30 per hour is a reasonable price and that's just for me a hand mower and a strimmer. Depends how much you want it and what sort of job they want!! Good luck whatever you decide:thumbup:
  22. Nice pictures. Don't know what the growth is in the last one mind you:lol:
  23. The rich people can afford professional help should they be caught whereas we can't so have to do it the right way!!!
  24. Right here we go. I was under the same illusion as others on this forum about this very subject. If the tax man does come asking questions and you say you phoned and someone said you don't have to declare anything you'll need a minimum of times and dates and a name if not a reference number as you will not get away from the tax man. You do have to declare anything you earn however little it may be. I work for a housing association in the day and run my own business out of hours. These business' should be run as any others income and outgoings etc. Your books need to be kept up to date as the tax man might just want to have a look. Should you decide not to bother and you are caught you will be fined immediately and then you will be investigated!! You will probably find that you will run at a loss for the first couple of years if you have to buy new kit but however little you earn as profit you will be expected to pay tax on it!!! The only thing you can opt out of as you already pay in your main job, and as long as you do earn less than £5,500 is NI and i know as i already have the letter from HMRC. I have to do a tax return every year so for those not doing it all i would say is be very careful otherwise one call from a jealous neighbour and you could be facing an immediate bill.
