  1. i would much prefer the industry as a whole trying to promote english softwood alongside english hardwoods as a firewood option - softwood isnt a dirty word you know
  2. seasoning only means reducing the moisture level to an acceptable level to burn - i.e. =<25% around, getting to this level can be speeded up with many methods
  3. umm i thought that, is it because BAZ is wanting the lightest weighing wood to volume out of it and so doesnt want Oak as it weighs heavy?? so going for what Sycamore?? although i note he states hes shipping at the moment chestnut and cherry?? on the website
  4. Hetas

i thought it was some ridiculously expensive cost, as i looked into it and when seeing the cost, dismissed it straight away on cost alone - we try and keep our overheads low, buying into this scheme the money would have to be recouped somewhere and im guessing we would have to raise our price per cube to recoup - therefore cutting our own throats to those who havent registered-- just my opinion j. - or is it keeping another quango afloat:sneaky2:
  6. no it keeps the consultants out of a job:blushing:
  7. save on paint and marking as the lads have got there eyes zoned in on the ones to come out - pick a winner everytime:biggrin:

    Hetas

i looked into the hetas scheme, but i may be wrong, but i seem to recall it costing us upwards of £350 to register each year and yet more paperwork? in the current economic climate i wuold have thought £50 would have been a more realistic charge and less paperwork!
  9. it will take careful consideration to go into something like this, as to resell as any form of decent compost, it will have to be put into windrows to create heat to kill any weed pathogens etc, also any windrows will create heat, there may be some smell as they need turning, then you get into the environment agency rules re; watercourses with regard to runoff theres a fairly big company near us and they are doing it in a big way and get nothing but bad press from local community every week - i would stear clear, unless you can get your setup well sorted from the beginning and make it pay
  10. after plugging in new relays i still cant get the stress control to work on my pto chipper, is there anything else i can try in the black box to work out whats wrong and what part i need to order? it works intermitantly when starting then when timber gets fed in its almost as though the vibration knocks it off again and it must be a loose wire, cant get anyone to come out and look at it this problem has been ongoing since the warranty ran out - can you give me details of another dealer who is willing to come on site and look at it for me, a brilliant machine but a frustrated user and located in Uttoxeter, staffs.
  11. when hedgelaying if the hedge has alot of stones or debris in the bottom best to lay with a axe or large billhook to save the chain and easier to use in this way than the saw and safer too ensuring no stones kicked up etc
  12. id check that your meter is accurate, as even bone dry inside wood would only read about 15% at its lowest, im not having a go, but just check it, as at this time of year wood will only dry to the atmospheres moisture, so even at the height of summer it would go possibly no lower than 17% - imo, j
  13. yes the rocking chair next to the stanley was definately vacant this evening - but then banging hot water every one in the bath (not at the same time I hasen to add!) - needed it after todays helping the lads chip up the brash from a thuja dismantle, stunk of pineapple all afternoon:thumbup:
  14. nice stack - what did you cut it with a processor?
  15. forest of dean with ray mears on know , looks interesting
  16. yes wusses - we only came back with a few midge bites, nettle stings and a few thorn cuts, throwing the cruck up to knock the apples off dodging that and with sheep round your ankes nicking the pickings and trying to knock us over - what are people like:blushing: and charlieh, i knew youd have to bag a bigger forage than us - show off:001_tt2: will have to take mr. concentration with me next time to beat you:lol:
  17. Sunday, kept the kids busy while dad was slurry spreading (note not on our field!), walked all the boundary fields collecting damsons, apples, blackberries, kids loved it, and filled the pull along cart with free food:thumbup1: - anybody else go forage
  18. glad your joking their mate, no all arisings stopping with customer:thumbup:, note to newbies - never ever do a job for free firewood, never have never will - its never worth it anyway, youll get nails in the trunk or something goes ary, we have always had nice virgin rainforest to massacre anyway:001_tt2:
  19. Mr. forgot his flask this morning so off i pop with some extra chain oil for him and when he said a large thuja next to a house - he wasnt joking, stopped for a bit of feeding chipper and photo taking nb the plate glass bow front window and glass roof to said window
  20. so true 18 stoner - got my stanley burning some nice seasoned larch tonight, cant stand the heat had to get out of the kitchen !- excuse my pun
  21. ive said it before and ill say it again "honesty is always the best policy"
  22. as said <=25% moisture content is the standard acceptable, humidity as dean rightly says will affect readings at different times of the year, aiming for around 25% , j
  23. birch is one of the nicest woods to mix in, if you start just pandering to folks like that it spoils them, as all wood is good, if you give it time to dry out, soon we shall all have to offer mixed species whether hard or soft or mixed between them. nothing wrong with arb waste steve, and calling it waste doesnt help promote firewood sales really, as a good mixed load of wood priced accordinly well will be a good product to anyone - j:thumbup1:
  24. tbh cant really see alot of timber left, it looks like the harvestors brashings, the top and branches that arent very big and leaving some standing deadwood for habitat, unless im missing something - brash baling is an option if terrain conditions permit - usual stuff as i can see
  25. always good to wear a belt with c/saw trousers, to attach your first aid kit and tapes etc when you get further advanced. oregon do a pretty cheap pair of trousers that will suffice if your not sure whether to go into it too seriously yet. good luck
