  1. all sounds very good, i would say lisa you have to charge what you can to cover your individual costs, work out what will cover your costs and make you a decent profit back , remembering to work in a bit for machine repairs/fuel costs rising and always remember to add in your own labour even if sometimes you dont take the wage. we never look at what our competitors charge as what you need is what will give you a good return to make your business profitable, each company may have different overheads to take into consideration all the best joy
  2. as mentioned in the thread - key thing to remember about wood is air flow - if stacked with no air in an enclosed building logs will get mouldy and dank, good air flow of either stacked cord wood or good air flow around cut logs - alot of people think you can store it like coal in an enclosed coalhole and then wonder why the wood is damp and dank even if rain does get to the face of the cut log if air seasoned it wont permiate into the wood but forced kiln dried wood is another matter it will absorb more moisture from the air than the air seasoned wood, like john says solar poly tunnels are just like air drying but speeded up somewhat to a few months rather than kiln dried where moisture is forced out unnaturally leaving timber like a sponge to soak up atmospheric moisture
  3. depends what you want, we can still supply in nets logs and sticks, no problem - still some seasoned hardwood & softwoods for both log nets- depends on quantities as we have had alot of our wholesalers repeat order at the last minute - but can usually sort something out - joy
  4. ed surely your not referring to the great bulk bag debate:lol: all the best ed - happy new year - guess who broke her thumb chopping my own firewood as the lads were too busy - got out of christmas dinner - but typings a devil! joy
  5. sometimes you have to bull it up a bit to make it sound more technical than it is:blushing: else we would all be doing it:sneaky2:
  6. sounds v .good , but to be honest a lot of talk for just streamlining cutting pallets into sticks mate - where you a consultant in a previous life:001_tt2: we all move machinery to optimise best practise and work rate - but i know what you mean no thanks, thanks for the offer ,but we produce our own sticks from our felled timber to optimise the workrate for forestry workers to find a better rate of return for a raw product of forestry - oh i cant do consultant double talk all the best joy
  7. your answer makes me want to know more - japan tobacco, pepsi, cadburys - i thought we were selling wood is it that into rocket science to streamline kindling production from these industries:confused1:, is this pallet recycling? and just give me a hint as to new methods - its really making me think - what new methods can be involved in making sticks?? aahhh - just read your next post -pallet recycling - questions answered - thanks joy
  8. i might be sounding daft - but is this just yew your wanting or all trunks? - we have some large yew trunk in long lengths with v.nice colouring, was going to mill ourselves or cut for turners, whats your offer prices -thanks joy
  9. is this coming from recycled timber? and 80k is some investment for a kindlet machine - you quote order quantity and commitment - both admirable - what about quality? new methods to the table - enlighten us please - sounds interesting
  10. thanks john, we already have some FC to fell, and the FC auction lots are not 100% what we want - but thanks for thinking of it for us - joy

  17. laar lar lar lar larch bits, sweepings up from the splitta machine, offcuts of sitka and scots from the firewood machines, all the bits we dont sell, me and the kids bag up, 3 bags a night of bits - keeps us toasty and warm - hot hot hot - then last thing at night a big beech log and keeps in til morning - loveley
  18. be careful over the tensions/compressions on said trees if not quite on the floor
  19. well I didnt want to be pedantic and draw your attention to said spelling error - for spotting this mistake award yourself a discount of say 15% for the price of your logs and treat yourself to a G & T with an added 10% on top as a sweetener for a slice of lemon
  20. thanks dave, should have heard the alarm bells ringing when he wanted a discount for spotting a spelling error, and then would pay for the load prompt cheque c.o.d - which in my book is not c.o.d. upon us deliverying an extra 10% ontop off the 3m3 he had ordered - as a "sweetener" - i said we dont do discounts or sweeteners - but as a goodwill gesture would fit in that night and give him 3 bags of sticks - shouldnt have bothered he came out and stood over the lads chucking it back on the truck and didnt like it when they were jovial and informed him that load was going straight to stafford for a immediate drop off, he was really wanting free logs and discounts off ontop - no chance - i wont be delivering to him again and to threaten trading standards, when we delivered the load in the cubing metre bags to show he wasnt getting a short fall - he even suggested some of the load wasnt beech - when my husband showed him it was beech without the bark on and by the way it was from a beech woodland and we had the FSC accreditation number from the FC where it had come from! i wouldnt mind - but it was a good load and we're genuine people, trying to sell quality products, i would welcome trading standards with open arms as all our quality checks and procedures are up to date and correct - bring it on!
  21. jon, stanleys are great, weve had ours over 10 years, bought it second hand for £500 and had no probs, runs 8 radiators, hot water and cooking - all on larch and softwood - Mr. saves all the hardwood for customers - and no softwood isnt a dirty word its fantastic, banging hot water and always a whistling kettle for a drink, oven hot for stews/roasts and bottom oven for drying off those wet boots - hang a clothes airer from your ceiling over the top and dry all your washing as well - thats for mrs.jon. all the best joy
  22. well it was inevitable really dave, we had our first bad egg of the year - and lets hope its the last - he was complaining about the moisture content of our load , after hed tried to get discount for noticing a spelling mistake on our web page! - hubby went to collect load as i said wed give a full refund and collect the load back if not happy - he was moisture metering with a log in his hand, covered in frost and snow after wed delivered to him on friday night late - in the snow - and pushed the moisture meter into the frost and read 32% after i said wed guarantee 25% and below - hubby explained you had to split the log in two to get an accurate reading in these extreme weather times - but wanted more discount and more logs - so we said no find another supplier - 500 tonnes delivered so far this season and no complaints - had to find one bad egg I suppose ! take note people who deliver to blackbrook near newcastle - beware of this bad egg! he even wanted another 3m3 to give in compensation! and then talk of trading standards - he didnt like it when i said bring it on we have nothing to hide in measure or moisture measuring. also said there was larch in - it turned out to be debarked Beech ! aarrghh - i suppose one bad egg in 500 loads aint bad! so far so good joy just goes to show a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous - or a moisture meter in the wrong hands - no good pressing moisture meter into a wet outer skin of the log - push it into the split open centre to give an accurate reading -
  23. stick it out big man, your time will come! - weve had a hell of alot of people selling, well i wont call it logs, wood round us and our sales had dropped off, but we stuck to our guns with our prices and did not drop even after loads of phone calls saying "we can get it cheaper from ...." i did not drop - and true to form have had three regulars come back who bought the so called cheap logs - first load was all twigs one said, second customer said was wet wood and another customer said all pallet wood with a few logs thrown on top - so hang on in there - as everyone says winter has just started joy.
  24. well dave, thats why we do mostly wholesale, pallets on a forklift me and the sister in law can shift about - barrow bags - leave to you beefy boys with your hernias and overweight transits:lol: its like ive always said in my previous threads - logs are hard work and there will be a lot coming back out of them after year 1, when they realise the amount of kit and man power you need to shift stuff. hope its all ok thou Dave - joking aside:001_huh: buy off the baron and save yourself alot of work:thumbup: joy
