  1. hope you get your grant, we cant get anything around us, if we were a few miles closer to Birmingham wed have grants coming out of our ears - had to buy everything we own ourselves and never had a helping hand from anyone - am I bitter - no, :sneaky2:just jealous - hope it works out for you all the best them log people in Staffordshire:thumbup1:
  2. Knowing Richard & Peter at Fuelwood - they are tweaking their machines all the time - weve got Splitta & Transaw and had Kindlet and we demo for them and they are always working at improvements all the time and because they are all handmade at Beausale they will add on any bits you want or tweaks etc that you may require - they DO actually listen to your feedback and are constantly improving - which I think is very good of a small company trying to stay ahead of the game and making a British Product to compete with all that foreign equipment - ooh dear I feel the National Anthem coming on...
  3. yes fair point, but I speak as I find, and we have had large forestry kit off jas'p's before and had probs - sometimes ok & come out ontime others they seem to have off days or three - but we do deal with other people all over England & Scotland, Wales & Ireland and they may be brill as encountered by others but thats just as weve found. not so with Fuelwood or yes even Caledoniaon we do deal alot with many other Forestry companies but sometimes the chap down the road is better than the one 200 miles away? isnt it?
  4. thats alright if you live in Scotland and want spares or advice quick - but you cant beat fuelwood for backup - we deal alot with them and they give advice, spares and mechanics call out even on a Sunday! which means alot in this game. People who sell things a way off may have a good product - but not always a good backup service - regards joy and rohan
  5. I would buy a kindlett off fuelwood, thats what we started with many moons ago, as I always think its better to produce your own - like you say - keeps a check on quality product etc. And why rent or buy in if your thinking long term - you can start payback your investment straight away. We are wholesalers - but if you want to setup and get it right straight away - make sure your processor can cut at exactly 6" for the kindlett, and that the wood is pretty much knot free (I know - almost impossible) but sort it as your filling it, keep the knotty bits for logs, keep the good bits for sticks - Larch is v.good, then scots - Bag supplies for your bags - very good quality, although pay a bit more , good quality bags. Have you got your truck sorted - got our new transit on the road today
  6. If you are wanting Forestry Contractors - pm if you are, we carry out this sort of thing if you are interested in us see our web RM Yeomans Forestry Contractor and Firewood Merchant | Home cheers joy
  7. would have loved to buy a cabstar but cant get hold of any decent ones at what ive got to spend - so went to auction thursday got a Transit tipper 05 at auction to replace the LDV thats on its knees - like driving a galleon she blows port and starboard when she hits a pot hole - poor girl - repalaced king pins, steering box(what a b'..d that was!)pump- can see floor through passenger side - told the lads its for extra power - put feet down and run! Transit to be on road Monday cant wait! - then I can also sell my lucky heather, read fortunes, sell my lucky charms and haul our caravan, kids and dags around.
  8. in that case - what id do uuummm Nissan Cabstar tipper (tight cab) but reliable and good looking tipper Jappa brill machines or if wanting something bigger we use the Fuelwood Transaw brill machine (not getting commission for saying this but we do demo for them) had ours new in August to replace our old jappa you can put though 14" diameter stuff and go all day cutting and not feel tired - already put through 200 tonne on ours since August - could have done more but have to keep felling it ! Buy your stuff in - try and sell mix loads - as hardwood is getting harder & pricier to come by - thats why we fell all our own from Forestry Commission - we buy as standing timber. Get a kindlet for small diameter pine to sell as sticks along with your logs to give your customer added value and a complete service and then once youve done that, sit down at 9.30pm and go on the computer whilst having your tea! all the best joy
  9. WOW samtheman - with that wonga your not setting up a firewood business your creating a firewood EMPIRE you cant go wrong with that amount of filthy luca
  10. 8K to start up - you lucky, lucky boy!!
  11. could you tell me my fortune please ...... or rather lack of it
  12. for a minute there I thought we were all talking like 14 year old hoodies "Street" language - bad/good - wicked/brilliant
  13. Internationals 784,785 something like that, cheap parts, lots of dealers still up and down country, easy to use. or any little tractor of similar ilk. Always be honest with customers, weve found is the best policy and theyll thank you for it, (although some people weve dealt with arent honest back but heyho its a funny old world and dont give them another thought - lifes too short) it is a competative market place at the moment with tree work and firewood selling - but if youve got a good product with a good service and a friendly face thats prepared to give advice to customers and a smile youll soon get your good name and reputation about. Competition has never been a concern of ours as I always think competition is healthy it keeps you on your toes and offers the customer a choice! pricing - difficult - try and find out what your nearest other sellers are selling logs for and price accordingly - never undercut, as i think if they are selling at that price, theyve worked it out that thats where there is a good margin in it. it may also dont rub people up the wrong way undercutting - make friends going up you might need them when your on your way down. Weve been at this business 10 years and Id like to think we are fair and honest with eveyone and we have a pretty good name about ( I hope!) as many people have posted - word of mouth is your best advert. it may be that to get to where you want to be instead of offering cheap logs offer to deliver weekends or evenings with a 48hr delivery service as an incentive to get work without upsetting any rivals etc all the best Them log people in Staffs.
  14. weve often mulled this over, if your just doing logs, cant get better than a transit tipper or iveco - as you can reverse up difficult drives better than with a trailer, also have it sign written nice with your landline number on - this distinguishes you from the dodgy dealers the ultimate weve often thought would be a hicap landrover with ally tiper body fitted - but we all have dreams dont we. All in all if your just doing logs and not tree surgery (chipping etc) go for a tipper like everyone else says - if your doing 3 + drops a day you will soon get tired of hand balling the logs on and off - best to tip and collect your money. L200s are OK but very uncomfortable if your a big guy, (like us ) tend to give you back ache if in allday - Landrovers brill can fix yourself, parts cheap, go off onto peoples lawns etc into wood Before they went bust you couldnt get a better truck than a cheap and cheerful LDV go for miles on £20 of derv. Mitsubuishi have to be serviced by Merc - so expensive Isuzu and Nissan brill trucks, but expensive - and tight cabs., but go well. Ultimate log truck - Unimog with tipper body and hiab! lets all build one! all the best in your venture youll never make a mint but have fun trying
  15. thanks Charlie regards joy - hope the sticks are alright!
  16. thanks for that, will get on website, cheers joy
  17. hi everyone - timber hauliers/merchants/foresters- anybody got any nice larch for sale or can get hold of some with a price to Uttoxeter, Staffs - weve got plenty of scots pine at the moment that were felling for FC at moment but a client of ours likes Larch logs for firewood ideal spec would be 10-14" diameter in 10-12ft lengths (anything over 6ft ideally) ideally 40tonne plus if at right price cheers joy
  18. its a timbermaster skyline (i think) - sorry about this joy replying - Rohan fast off in the land of nod as usual! built by a&B scotland (yes think its abs),, runs off our case 956 or valmet, needs quite a bit off oomph i seem to recall when ive seen the lads setting up as the mast to go up needs quite a bit of power off the tractor - yes i think it is pto driven. some pics off our website RM Yeomans Forestry Contractor and Firewood Merchant | Home go onto our flikr page to show should be some pics when the lads were up at aviemore withit skylining at the glenfeshie estate. is a good thing and can runa line a fair distance - will try and roust Rohan tomorrow he will dictate a better reply for you - cheers - nice to find people with an interest in the kit, we took it to our apf stand last year and it created a bit of interest from the old boys who remember them. nite nite joy

  20. Yes, we have had a new customer with similar problems - wanted us to cut a longer length of wood than we normally do, so we did, processed it straight into back of tipper, delivered on our normal size tipper which we quote as holding approx 2 cubic metres (an ldv tipper 3.5 tonner), we had nt realised that the longer lengths had more spaces between and didnt sit well in the truck and when the customer then stacked it they complained that he was a prof. and measured 1.8 cubic metres or something to that ilk - wanted to keep the load - didnt want money back, but only wanted to pay for half of load due to "not as supplied quanitity and threatend us with trading standards" needless to say, we wont be selling any more to them - but everybody, just be aware there are jobs worths out threre - and we are not in any habit of ripping people off - always offer full refund if not satisified - but some people I think cause trouble cause they enjoy it!
  21. we dont sell by weight only by volume, and when at the end of the season youve sold you 1,000 odd tonne stockpile - you get desperate to dry stuff quick! - yes polytunnel works, got one - but thought about a burner to use up the mountain of bark, stick offcuts, wood waste and mountain (big big mountain) of sawdust just a thought - thanks for info joy and rohan
  22. only wanting to know about it, as when we get down our large stock of seasoned wood , you always come last end of spring start using up your last stocks, and theyve hung about with snow on and got very wet, and the poly tunnel is good, we do use it, brilliant for sticks, but thought we could power something withe the waste we get from making sticks, and the huge amount of sawdust we have - i know once it comes out the kiln it sucks up the moisture in the air etc, but thought we could attempt something with a storage container and a blower attached to a dragon burner or similiar and wanted to know if anyone has tried??
  23. trying to source a cheap way to build a firewood drying kiln - anyone know how to build a cheap one - or any ideas
