  3. sorry should have said "WOOD BURNING STANLEY" ,said Aga as no one evers heard of a Stanley - same thing as a Rayburn
  4. dont need one at moment, just wondering if anyone had used one and how they had got one, particularly with fresh felled stuff like Rhodie etc with alot of green on, all good input, thanks for replies, will keep all contact numbers etc if i need to get back to you all - thanks again
  5. yes, brill stuff, burning it at moment on our aga, some people think softwoods a swear word! EDUCATION!!
  6. have you had a look at Oxdale products, they do a good splitter, I think it comes in a range of power supplies, electric, off tractor, motor - its a good product with a single spool lever that could be operated by one man quite quick. - try google oxdale - they usually go to APF etc - and they are reasonably priced
  7. think this thread is getting a bit to heated - shouldnt you calm down a bit, after all its only a forum discussion - you invited discussion - shouldnt you take all inputs given no matter if you agree or disagree with them?
  8. all this talk about whats a cubic metre of firewood, value for money - whats happened half way round the world on the News just puts into perspective how lucky we all are in this country. and how our problems can soon be put as minute compared to theirs.
  9. didnt see any of this in the thread - are we all talkining about different threads? - anyway all this for one load of firewood - for godness sake!:confused1:i'm burning what some would describe as rubbish - to save the goodstuff for the customer! try some wet larch & wet conifer - burns a treat, cooking on it, hot water, rad's banging! all wood is good in my opinion!, if a bit wet, stack it next to your cooker/stove if your supplier says hes got mostly ash on and a pickup for £80 go buy it sounds alright to me, especially if hes been patient and answered all your questions, if moneys that tight you can always pawn your computer:001_tt2:
  10. know what you mean gensetsteve - we had one lady who bless her! was told by the stove installer to ask for 3-5 year old seasoned beech! shes happily had our wood off us for this last season - no probs reported, beech cut and dried in vented bags for 12 months - MC 18-25% Beech - lovely.
  11. got ours off ebay, weve got some big ones and these little handy pocket ones go from zero to 60% which is perfect for firewood, that the loads have in their trucks, and in their pockets, cheap enough if they get lost but weve had them over a year and all ok - german technology ! on ebay under moisture meter, they have got proper spikes to go into timber and i think we paid £15.99 plus VAT etc p&p , cant put up a link but try this off google- TOP-MESSTECHNIK *** SAGT DANKE - Willkommen
  12. just caught this thread - ash has a creamy pink hew to it, but i'd say just stipulate to your firewood supplier you want :some decent dry hardwood with a low moisture content, that way youll get something thats good, ash is a bit overrated really it is a good wood but not worth paying any extra for and certainly no worse or better than any hardwood, but why not get any decent hardwood which is just as good, beech, oak etc all very good. green ash is a myth, all wood needs to be dry. get a reputable firewood merchant - ask around, word of mouth is always the best recommendation - if hes any good he'll have a moisture meter get it about =<25% and will give you what you ask for - ask for a sample, if hes any good he'll let you come and have a look or have a small net to try surely - i would try and get it around £60-£80 cubic metre - but ALOT depends where you are as prices do seem to vary around the country. hope this helps - good luck with your search. a good tree ident book may help with future log deliveries, but if you get a good supplier i wouldnt worry about ash.
  13. these are the figures weve used when processing hardwoods for firewood, especially beech into log form - people think you can get more than 1 - 1.5 cubic metre per tonne but you dont when youve logged it all up. - i think some of the people whove bought in timber at 26 tonne lorry loads will soon realise its harder to achieve those margins as they think theyll get more cube out of it.
  14. was he not wearing it this afternoon! when you called round:lol:
  15. keep a count and we can all have the definative answer to that age old question - how many cubes, how many barrow bags, how many logs, how many loads!!!!!!!! how much work - all the best
