Likewise with 'chipper insured as a trailer'. My mate had his chipper nicked, rolled half a mile up the road and dragged another couple of hundred yards. It was a Vermeer so easily repairable for a grand (!) but the insurers saw it as an uninsured chipper as opposed to a trailer which they would have covered. Worth checking with NFU - and getting in writing if not already - if you don't change insurers.

How about a day's hire of a Bobcat/similar with mulcher if the chainsaw/chipper option doesn't appeal?

Saw the same a few days ago on a semi-mature sycamore: completely ring-barked by strips at ground level and patches of bark missing at 15' or more height. There are a lot of squirrels around this year; does sycamore have exceptionally sweet bark being a maple? This is in West Sussex btw.

You can also tempt her with the knowledge that a similar agave is what they distil tequila from and if she looks hard enough she'll find the Peyote cactus from which is derived mescaline. She's got quite a trip (ha ha) in the offing...

Have just been to my mate's farm near John O'Groat's and helped him deal with the bigger bits of a 25 ton load of conifer stem he bought to see him through a couple of winters. He could not believe that such an apparently small axe was splitting 26x16" rings. It's a seriously good axe.

Thanks for that. Seeing as probably 100% of the information in the book will be new to me I'm happy to pay the Kindle price: I think the hardback would have been stretching things a bit. Jon -

I run 24" & 30" bars on mine and love it. Parts availability not a problem it seems as I've just put a new chainbrake handle on.

Have had the same thing in a large garden in Epsom; they're very territorial and our one could make the length of the 40 yard garden in just over two minutes to get to us!

I get similar every now and then. Check the H and L screws are at factory settings (refer to manual) and see if that helps: they made need a fine tune from there but the saw should run well enough. If that doesn't do the trick you need better advice than I can offer.

What's the likely long-term prognosis if these trees are left untouched? Perhaps the weather could change to conditions in which the trees could put on strong growth and outdo, or at least live with, the infections. There's a 40-odd year old one at the top of my road looking poor; very few leaves on it but I haven't looked closely for the scatter-gunned appearance so I really have no idea what the problem is. I had thought 'general stress' due to having mown grass up to its bark all its life; it's always lived in a lawn.
