  1. Remember... we were only milling wood; right?!
  2. And while I'm here why not celebrate another native.
  3. Nothing special in terms of quality but an uplifting sight 20 feet from the house.
  4. They'll eat bloody anything and destroy anything they can to get at it! I count my blessings that until two winters ago they'd never stopped in the garden here but now they're regular visitors, though few in number. They roost in hundreds if not more a couple of miles down the road on some marshes.
  5. I read it as tongue in cheek, the 'emergency' being felt by the caller. Hope I'm right; you're quite right to want clarification of course.
  6. If the above happens early enough give me a shout: I'll be taking the pickup to Caithness around April 10th so could throw the wood out en passant. Jon
  7. Another one getting e-mailed 'you have a PM' but no PM on A/T. The reverse of a few weeks ago!
  8. I couldn't come close but it looks like that stack sheds half its rain against the house wall; not good. On a more positive note - yes, it's a bit sad!
  9. John:

If you want to try out an Arb Trolley before buying give us a shout. I'm sure I could manage without it for a week or so.

  10. Point taken! Keep any e-mails etc that show you've made the effort because one day a resident who genuinely likes trees will make noises and ask 'what are the tree guys doing about it?' The ones hiding behind their rocks now will stay there but point fingers at you: we all know how they work. Best of luck to you but it looks like an uphill struggle there.
  11. And why should you calm down? Is no-one there forward-thinking enough to make a stand: plant replacements, put up CCTV, publicise the whole thing and deal with any culprits? If this was a one-off the above would be OTT of course but it seems to be a habit that needs breaking.
  12. Sickening isn't it. If the trees do go will the Council replace them with twice the number?!
  13. Likewise: just too far fetched but fascinating nonetheless. The author has been widely rubbished!

    Strong bridge

Good to see that the Yanks have let the numpties carry on being just that: here it would have been the bridge's fault, necessitating an instant rebuild, an inquiry into the granting of permission to build it and counselling being offered to the poor innocent motorists.
  15. If that's who I think it is - we communicated re him a couple of years ago - he travelled to Horsham to collect some then. Jon
  16. The difference in sapwood and knotwood is huge. When you're cutting it it's a bit like cotton wool with lumps of iron in.

    Jokes???

Teacher: If I gave you 2 cats and another 2 cats and another 2, how many will you have? Johnny: Seven, Sir. Teacher: No, listen carefully... If I gave you 2 cats, and another 2 cats and another 2, how many will you have? Johnny: Seven, Sir. Teacher: Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you 2 apples, and another 2 apples and another 2, how many would you have? Johnny: Six. Teacher: Good. Now if I gave you 2 cats, and another 2 cats and another 2, how many would you have? Johnny: Seven!!! SIR! A very angry Teacher: Where the hell do you get seven from?!?!? A very angry Johnny: I've already got a cat!!!
  18. That's just a bonsai nursery with a bit of bottom heat.
  19. Have been to numerous osteopaths down the years and one chiro. The osteos all treated the symptom while finding corollary issues, with varying degrees of success. The chiro takes a more holistic view and treats the whole spine, the ethos being that a spine that's in order leads to an unstressed nervous system and hence a muscular system that's also in order: what he's actually working on is the central nervous system via the musculoskeletal system His treatment has led to way longer lasting benefit than any of the osteos'. But I'm not bashing osteos: some worked better than others but you soon find that all practitioners, whatever their title, have a slightly different take on things. I would recommend a chiro myself but only by trying each will you find what's best for you: you may try a rubbish chiro but a brilliant sports physio.
  20. Well I did see PEN 15 a few times years ago...
  21. OK, saw the guy today and have some egg on my face. I asked 'what would be the top price you'd pay for a 6' x 9" piece of top quality laburnum - one with a large, straight and dark heart'? £40! But you should get more selling directly to a turner if you can find one keen enough on the stuff. Every turner I speak to for the first time who answers the question 'what woods do you like?' includes lab. Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up. I'll crawl off now... Jon

    Elm trees

Have a look at the leaves: Wych Elm's is fatter with a distinct form to the tip but the difference isn't huge and once you've allowed for natural variation there's not a lot in it. And don't think that because 'it's Wych Elm, not English' the wood isn't of value: I have this very day sold an 8' x 14" piece for milling.
  23. Best of luck with it Luke. If you got home in the same time you got here you will certainly have blown any cobwebs out of it. Hope it serves you well. Jon
  24. Also if it's a Frisia it may be suffering the whatever that closes off the vascular rays, which are narrow in the variety.
