  3. There's a new recipe awaiting release - Nag Bol.
  4. The pic is of sap icicles. I pruned it one cool day in December and it froze hard that night. There have been no ill effects; the tree's fine with no dieback near the wounds but that's not true of the three 3" cuts I made: they broke back 7-8" behind the cuts and there are now dead stubs. Of course that may happen regardless of pruning time; I can't say whether it was the timing of the cut or the size of the cut that led to that small dieback. Jon
  5. You're not wrong Clive: turners' advice to me has included 'mill it, then the thick boards can be cut up for blanks'. Hence what I did to 9" robinia branches. Jon
  6. Cheers Clive but they are as I get them; I haven't touched any of them. Having any wood milled is something I've only recently done (see the v small robinia boards): shorter stuff I manage to flog to turners. I take it the word 'longer' at the end of your post refers to length of wood, not length of time? Jon
  7. They'll bleed just about any time they're cut!

Lawsons was what I had to hand the first time I made one. It not only burns well but if you're not too close (smokey) it gives off a lovely smell which I can only describe as a cross between lemon and vanilla!
  9. If any of your kit has unique identifying marks - broken bits, cracks etc - that you can describe accurately I'd contact Herts Police and put it to them.
  10. Have a butchers through these, sitting on my drive. http://www.dropbox.com/sh/eqhbfcmu6unrn6h/i42TslbTGm
  11. Funny you should say that; I was thinking yesterday how good for the sport to make it The Seven Nations - Hungary next I guess - but that would involve too many matches on top of club duties. Your idea's better; a European league. Good one.
  12. Too right it does. Had asparagus twice last week and I think 'unreal' is a very good word for it!
  13. I've had two allotments in my time but ran out of time to manage them. Would have enjoyed it a lot more if I'd had the time to do things properly instead of always playing catch up. I used to run a strict three year rotation and tried to avoid any chemicals (without knowing what residues were in the manure). I even tried a bit of companion planting to exercise pest control - onions among the carrots, that sort of thing. We'll move house one more time, then there'll be a veggie patch at home instead of 15 minutes walk away. Tony, a bit of planning will go a long way, but I'm sure you're organised enough for that anyway. Best of luck with it. Jon
  14. Slope makes a big difference for all materials, so much so that I sometimes put the front wheels up on a set of Halfords wheel ramps.
  15. Nice one by the commentator early in the game - 'Twelvetrees felled five yards from the line'!

Thanks for the frank reply. Good luck with it: I think you'll do well.
  17. Beware the word in bold if such a person does roll up: check everything!
  18. I don't think the branches will be of use as it's the eyes that appeal to turners. The branches do make exceedingly good firewood though. Jon
  19. I'd agree from my own experience. 400mm's a good size to sell; enough wood to turn something of size but not so much that a larger than average lathe is needed. I've had problems shifting bigger stuff in the past becasue of the oversize and hence weight. Do you have any smaller pieces, e.g. 10-12" diameter? That sells best of all if it has decent eyes (knots).

I like the fact that the cups hold the cut stuff too. How long does that beam under the cups last and how do the cups fix to its replacement?! The beam's life would be extended if each cup was on a separate block so there was clear air below your last cut. You need raised cups!
  21. Dan, PM me during the last few days of February if you're still after some and I'll put some aside for you. I'm in Caterham but regularly use the M Twenty Car Park clockwise if it's a trek. Jon
  22. Yes. It's the closest thing there is to a universal property database for general stuff: of course there are specialist ones for plant.
  23. I'll have a stem or two from Coulsdon/Banstead borders on March 1st. Please don't say you want it in 10' lengths; I've only got an Arb trolley and a trailer! Jon
  24. Luke, in a recession as we are I cannot believe the tax man is going to want you to sell your means of making money to pay his bill: that would be cutting his nose to spite his face as he'll be wanting money from you in the future. As said contact HMRC, explain the situation but make a realistic offer that shows you're not taking the mick. Mr HMRC will get his money, sure, just not now.
  25. Okay, I'm a convert; I underestimated it. Thanks all; Gus - I won't read it all if you don't mind (!) but the plant seems to have surprising potential for a weed. Any one know why Holland want/wanted large amounts of stem (in the report)?
