  1. Willesden being NW London it may be worth trying Gristwood & Toms; their hq is in Shenley, Herts.
  2. Google for woodturners' clubs in your area and contact them direct: works for me. I sold Monkey Puzzle to Surrey, Wiltshire and Devon from one tree in West Sussex.

    Birds

I've seen one swallow this year on April 14th; sitting on a phone line near East Grinstead. I should think it was knackered and a pound to a penny it's a goner now as we've had frosts since then. Hopefully the answer to your question is 'yes, too early' as it's cold and wet - not good weather for flying insects. Jon Oh - nesting; had to turf out a robin that had made a start on one in my daily used tool holdall.
  4. A few years ago Andrew Gale had his wagon completely kitted out by someone quite local I think - he did tell me the name at the time but of course it never sank in. You could ask him. Jon
  5. Paying to lose it is going to cost you more than a tenner a load I'm afraid. I know of trade green waste sites at Fetcham and Keston (Biggin Hill) and they'll want £20. There must be one closer I'd have thought.

    Jokes???

I've just spent a couple of hours defrosting the fridge or, as the wife likes to call it, foreplay.
  7. Could you not use a disc mower, perhaps with reinforced blade edges that smash rather than cut? I've seen one of those made (steel welded along the leading edges) and behind an MF35 it was taking on 10' gorse on steep hills in mid-Devon. Mind you no-one wanted to be within 50 yards of the thing - it was lethal until some strong skirts were added.
  8. How will they know it's your own writing?!
  9. Ha ha. There was one of those (a Murcialago) going round Parliament Square Saturday night before last. It was pretty damned loud without a modded exhaust. I reckon I could stay down here in the deep South and still hear you if you did mod it. Thinking... you hadn't just nicked it had you?!
  10. Well I'm glad someone (else!) has asked at last! I've had a 6.25lb Faithfull splitting maul for about 8 years and have never touched the blade; it works fine. I was planning on carrying on that way, the thinking being that the blunter the edge the less chance of sticking the axe an inch into a tough lump; either the lump will split or the axe won't penetrate. A darned fine question A!
  11. Have you read the notice at the top of the Arbtalk screen Darren?!
  12. Right, I'm with you. Hopefully others here can expand on 'variations' for you but I'm aware that there are Kohler and Honda powered models and 13hp or 15hp engines; mine runs on a 13hp Kohler and is a 1997 machine. Whether both makes were used in both power options I don't know. You've got it with 'they are pretty basic anyway'; I don't think you'll have any problems with spares or servicing as there are still a good number of the machines in service. Let me know about the manual situation if I can help. Jon
  13. Is it so important to have a serial number Darren?
  14. 1) As stated I'm sure Timberwolf can help: I got my 34-page manual from the private seller. If you get stuck pm me and I'll get a copy done (sorry Timberwolf!) 2) The serial number on my 1997 model is on the black and grey plate you can see halfway along the nearside in the pic 3) I'd say that loud is normal but you can tell the difference between a loud but correctly silenced engine and one that's not properly silenced; a holed silencer produces a raw, piercing sound; that's how I'd describe it anyway. I bought mine from 'Joe', a gardener/landscaper in Stourbridge who went into electronics recycling only to regret it months later. Small world. Jon
  15. Definitely drill the knot: the hole will have grain encircling it, giving the cup an almost unique feature.
  16. ...and D.odora? I trim bits off every year and haven't had a problem with it.
  17. ...and for my Navara.
  18. V. rhytidophyllum is the worst plant I have come across to put through a chipper: the dust generated is way more irritant than that from either Buddleia or ivy. Definitely stand upwind.
  19. Important point well emphasised.
  20. Sorry, don't have any pics; I haven't had an outbreak in years! I suppose I could try and induce one when the sun comes out... I may have been lucky but I seem to remember that there was no discomfort, just a bright red weal. Jon
  21. Beat me to it. Not a tree but a common plant - the milky sap of euphorbia (the English version being spurge) has a similar effect. Often found in dry soil under trees.
  22. I find that customers are reassured by the mention of PL Insurance when they know that any broken greenhouses etc will be paid for. The out-of-work accident insurance is a good suggestion: I've had a non-profit policy (i.e. the money is not invested) running for over 20 years. The premium is low but in the event of loss of a limb or eye you stand to gain a 5-figure payout; there are lower payouts too for lesser injuries. Jon
  23. ...or alder: isn't that what the neolithic piles found in the fenlands are made of?
  24. I know naff all about milling but I've just taken three 4' lengths of 16" cherry for milling. The guy uses a Woodmizer and 4',6' 15' - not a problem. Have you actually been told that 4' is too short?
  25. ...allotments, owners of small woodlands with a network of rides...
