  1. You can check it too, not just the old bill.
  2. Obviously I've no idea what you want the rooted cuttings for but cornus do well as sticks stuck in compost.
  3. I thought that barb for cattle was for them to scratch themselves on. If there's something the other side of it they want it certainly doesn't stop them. But then again every herd seems to have an individual or two that apply the same attitude to electric fence. So yes, I wonder at the use of barb for cattle.
  4. I'd gleefully pay more to be 42 again!
  5. At that price I don't think you're going to save more than £30-40 with anyone but you could try Low Cost Commercial Vehicle Insurance From Commercial Vehicle Direct I paid £550 for my 57-plate Trek last February and I'm in Surrey, just outside London, surely a cheaper area than yours.
  6. I doubt there's been any criminal offence committed by anyone: property law is a horrendous minefield. Re access to your kit however... I believe it is still the case that even when bailiffs are seizing property under a warrant they don't have the right to a man's 'goods and chattels', i.e. the clothes he wears and the tools of his trade. So you may have a case for demanding access to your equipment - to move it out. Speak to a solicitor who deals in civil law. It may cost you but unless your knowledge of the law is at the same standard assume nothing.
  7. It's done with eggs by the million so I don't see why it couldn't be done with logs. As with anything new outlay would be high but if someone's producing enough logs... But that all has to be weighed up against the number being stolen: the chances are that if that many are getting lifted there's a major security problem best sorted by means other than stamping firewood. But the original suggestion's not as daft as it may seem.
  8. Did he not just need to bump the trailer to release the brakes that automatically apply when the drawbar piston is compressed? That's what happens with my Indespension trailer and the chipper I tow; I'm pretty sure that's what's meant to happen.
  9. You're a long way from me but I see the Checkatrade marker on tradesmens' vehicles all the time so it may be worth a punt, but only after more research: I can't offer any guide as to how much trade it brings them. Good luck to you, Jon
  10. No but he did well: had balance and upper body strength lacking in most of the others. Personality aside that - ahem - gentleman from Oop Narth - the one in the glittery pink teeshirt - showed fantastic balance in his first round. That program as a live show could earn a mint in this country if only we were allowed to put ourselves in a degree of danger without the state knowing better and preventing it. Hence it being staged in Argentina!
  11. That's brilliant re the tarps Jam - cheers: I've always struggled to find the size I really want - long and narrow to cover a pallet-based stack - but these are perfect; cheap too. I'll look into secondhand Heras too; I've used reinforcing mesh panels (11'x6') for my own stack at home. The plus side with them is that you can drag logs out through them - you don't have to make gated access so to speak - but obviously that's no use in a commercial setting. Happy New Year to you, yours and everyone here. Jon
  12. This subject was discussed on here many moons ago and someone who seemed to know his stuff mentioned that MDF was awful stuff to burn domestically because the many chemicals it produces include benzene-based ones: compounds based on the 6-carbon benzene ring are highly carcinogenic.
  13. ...or design. I'm forever knocking on the brake of my 262. I swear at it and live with it.

    Jokes???

I told the wife that according to reincarnation we all come back as different creatures. She said "I'd like to come back as a cow". I said "You obviously haven't been listening".
  15. Mine has a spring-loaded catch for the ratchet wheel that locks in the open position for releasing. It helps a lot because, as you point out, two hands just aren't enough otherwise. Jon
  16. Is the wood available? I'm not interested in the ridiculous tub thing...
  17. This be they. Dead quick and easy to set up but they have a short cable so they're only good where a short pull is needed. 2 TON PULLER FOR FARM TRAILER WINCH LANDSCAPER RATCHET | eBay
  18. I helped hack off 50% of one of those some years ago in autumn and we had some very cold weather that winter. But the tree was in a sheltered spot and even in heavy but fertile clay (Merstham, near Redhill) and didn't suffer a jot; exploded into growth the next year. And that I believe is my 1000! Jon
  19. An excellent post sir - I doubt there will be better on the subject. You should consider a job at The Independent!
  20. The methodology of the experiment was heavily questioned. At a recent physics seminar at Oxford University the question was asked 'do you believe that the experiment revealed the presence of particles that travel faster than light?' One person put their hand up. Doesn't prove anything but the relevant scientific community is highly cynical.
  21. I think the kid's reaction, or lack of, is so sad ; that kind of behaviour is the norm for him it seems. The woman's spending Crimble inside on remand, probably for her own protection as much as anything - there's a lot of bad feeling locally - but also for psychiatric assessment. Jon
  22. I don't worry about my hands but spent a while this afternoon getting conifer sap chipper spray off the roof of the pickup. I'll try milk next time but was using ever so trendy Lakeland Plastics Sticky Stuff Remover and didn't quite sneak it back into the house before the wife came home. Jon's in the doghouse again...
  23. Not talking about this one are you? (Sorry for derail). 'On a recent trip to the United States, Tony Blair, Ex. Prime Minister of the UK, addressed a major gathering of Native American Indians. He spoke for almost an hour on his plans for a Carbon Trading Tax for the UK and Europe At the conclusion of his speech, the crowd presented him with a plaque inscribed with his new Indian name - Walking Eagle. A very chuffed Tony then departed in his motorcade, waving to the crowds.. A news reporter later asked one of the Indians how they came to select the new name given to Tony Blair They explained that Walking Eagle is the name given to a bird so full of **** that it can no longer fly.'
  24. OK, Santa's got the order. I have wood at two sites 30 miles apart so if the two axes are even stevens I'll just keep one at each. Yeah, we're all big kids aren't we - until we've been splitting logs for a while, at which point the age difference between mind and back makes itself felt. Thanks all, Jon
