  1. Fascinating thread Glen but what a kicker re the accident; really sorry for you. Do as you're told and get well soon! Thanks for coming back to us; it's feeling like a drawn out soap now!
  2. A healthy one will certainly take annual trimming but it's a strange way to treat a Robinia. Do you want a tree or a shrub? If the latter perhaps removal of the Robinia and replacement with a desirable shrub is the way to go...?
  3. I've got a blue pair; I've been called a chainsaw gigolo and someone on here reckoned they looked like part of a clown outfit. Think I'll go for red next time They are very comfortable and nothing's broken but then they haven't had a hard life. I do like them, make no mistake. My only problem with the cut is that like most modern trousers the crotch is only half the depth it needs to be; the waist button pops out from under the belt buckle the whole time and if you try to lift the button you can forget about having kids. For £100 though I think they're excellent value and from a retailer not known for their low prices. That's a euphemism.
  4. Magnificent - as they should be. Over here Red Robin's become the new leyland for cheap domestic hedging.: clipped regularly (nothing wrong with that) but never getting the chance to flower properly. Such a waste of a tree that has showy flowering and berries.
  5. I wouldn't rate it as highly as English oak but have no problem with mixing it in with all the other species. It's considerably lighter in weight when seasoned than English.

    Night Shifts

I used to work 7 Nights and by the 6th night was just getting used to it when shifts changed - ugh. If you haven't done Nights before it'll take a bit if getting used to but hopefully you're doing a decent run of them which, as per above, are better for you and easier to live with, than two or three. As for what Nights do to your guts.... we'll leave that one there!
  7. Sure does. I love the fact that he has an expression and not just a blank stare; adds real character. Good one.
  8. Have only seen 2 of these this year but then my eyes aren't so great.
  9. Well done! I like both the finished article and the attitude behind it - great stuff.
  10. Oh yes; mine too. I still find this thread a huge feelgood, especially as I've had a similar result with an 8' tall apple!
  11. But won't they crack radially if just left? Not arguing, just asking...
  12. I keep a pair of potted horse chestnuts going that my lad planted when he was 3; Andy's conkers!

  14. Good advice as ever Andy: the bit about keeping the phone on you is a virtual must as the technology's there but when I nearly needed it a while ago it was 50 yards away in the pickup because it's a bloody great lump that doesn't fit any phone pocket - a Blackberry in an Otterbox. When I change phones in the future I'm going back to a Samsung tough phone. Hope the vessel heals up OK. Were you deliberately avoiding detail about how your injury happened?
  15. Further to your 'timber contacts' thread the source I was referring to at Helmsdale was the Navidale Estate. They delivered 25 tons of softwood stems to Wick for my farmer mate there.
  16. Good to know I'm not the only tightwad here! 95% of my home burn is conifer with the other 5% being hardwood bits too small to call 'logs'.
  17. ...if they're dealt with politely and fairly, which should be the case of course.

    Badgers

Can be but not always. I have a rellie who dairy farms outside Tiverton. He has two active setts within 200 yards of the house that he knows of and yes, he has bTB in a big way and has had for years. Financially it's been hugely disadvantageous but not crippling; he's still in business but has learned to manage the situation. Bull calves get kept for many months longer than desirable but they always go in the end. As far as the badgers go he's sanguine: he's happy for a cull but doesn't expect any good to come of it. He certainly doesn't want each and every black n white varmint shot on site; in fact he's never done anything to harm one as he sees the need for farmers to work in, around and with nature, not despite it. A steward of the countryside perhaps? Jon

  20. I reckon mine will last at least 10 years and almost certainly more. £40 a year to save miles of walking, smashing every border plant with brush 4' either side of me, moving 6x what I can carry on each trip, moving logs many times heavier than I can carry... what a bargain.
  21. Following on from James correct advice you could just nip off endweight now to relieve the flopping, then hit them as hard as you like after flowering late next spring. The biggest risk though if you do that is snow damage if there's a big fall.

    Jokes???

Some children were asked to identify the flavour of some sweets by their colours: Red.....................Raspberry Yellow.....................Lemon Green..................Lime Orange ...............Orange Finally the teacher gave them all HONEY Lifesavers. None of the children could identify the taste. The teacher said 'I will give you all a clue; it's what your mother may sometimes call your father.' One little girl looked up in horror, spat out her lifesaver, and yelled 'Oh my God - they're ****holes!' The teacher had to leave the room.

    Jokes???

A guy is walking along a beach when he comes across a lamp partially buried in the sand. He picks up the lamp and gives it a rub. A genie appears and tells him he has been granted one wish. The guy thinks for a moment and says "I want to live forever." "Sorry" says the genie; "I'm not allowed to grant eternal life." "OK then; I want to die after a Labour government balances the budget and eliminates the National Debt." "You crafty little bastard" says the genie.
  24. To derail slightly... happy with everything from Vistaprint? I wasn't; Google 'Vistaprint scam' and you'll see why. Worth checking in your own case. Best of luck for the future.
