  1. Prunus padus.
  2. Looking from an English legal point of view... I doubt any court or insurance company would pay much heed to a 4-year old alleged verbal assessment; they'd want a report upon which to base judgment.
  3. Yes the pot limits size and the tree remains healthy as long as it's looked after, i.e. fed and watered.
  4. If you don't mind a bit of pruning how about a Wisteria?
  5. I guess if it had been horribly sticky you would have said so so it's probably not Cotinus - Smokebush. If the buds in the last pic are from the same it definitely isn't. Now wasn't that a worthwhile post!

  8. joebepi, to give you an idea of cost an accountant is probably going to be a few hundreds of pounds; certainly not thousands. The savings will be more.
  9. The sensible thing is to find yourself an accountant to do your annual return. Don't worry about his fees being yet another expense; he will save you more than the fees.
  10. I agree; they look really good. Well done.

I've tracked down the above gent and spoken to him. It seems there were a few Trekkasaws about at the time as they were made in Dorking and he worked for the manufacturers before setting out alone. It's almost certainly him in the pics as he had the Hilux there. I think the jigsaw is complete. My thanks to all who have contributed. Jon
  12. Has been done by quite a few Americans for exactly that reason - it's cheaper to live on a cruise liner than in a home.
  13. No problems here. My cages aren't in a particularly exposed site so horizontal rain isn't an issue. I don't see why there wouldn't be airflow in the middle of the cages; the logs are thrown in and you can clearly see huge amounts of airspace. But whatever the hypothesising experience says 'no problems with middle logs'. My roof consists of a 1.25m wide scaffold sheet laid along a row of cages. Of course the sides get wet in any rain that isn't vertical but it soon dries off.
  14. By vertical chippers I take it that 'wee' chippers is meant. My Jo Beau M300 weighs 145kg and I get it on/off my pickup myself with no problems; ramps @£140! A trailer for the chipper would be even easier of course.
  15. No! For starters I have nowhere indoors but it's not needed anyway. A good deal of seasoning happens through the winter moths; don't think it stops for the cold. Airflow, airflow, airflow is what you need so leave them outdoors and don't worry about a bit of rain. I actually had a heap of split logs on the ground a few years back that I never got round to putting in cages. I sold them off the ground bit by bit, taking a load at a time off the outside in dry weather. Jon

Is that the guy in the pics? If so you are a star. Not important in the grand scheme of things maybe but to put the pieces together after 30 years would be so good - the known source of the timber, another Arbtalker that used the same machine, my lad using some of the last known board for his table and now perhaps the name of the guy milling the tree. The pics are going to be kept in an envelope taped to the underneath of the table in a flat in West Dulwich. I'm sure I wasn't this sentimental as a young man!
  17. How could I? It's her birthday!
  18. ...Just that branch I take it...? Ta for the info.
  19. On its trailer the weight comes in at a jot under 3 tons; worth bearing in mind when choosing your tow vehicle. Legal for my Navara - just - but not the most comfortable journey!
  20. Does it have to be 100HP? Orange Plant at Plumpton have a Carlton 7015 (70+HP).

It does sound like that saw is a few years old! Do you still use it? If so some pics would be good.

You know the colour of a good free range egg yolk Al - that rich and bright yellow? My dad had an Allegro that colour.

This is brilliant chaps - thanks very much. Even if I never get the name of the mill's owner it's fascinating to see the connections here, there and everywhere. Keep it coming...
