  1. Turned up on site today to check on the Gums and a couple of Pines that were looking sick and wadaya know. Theres a fella complete with funnel in drill hole pouring a mixture of tordon and roundup into it. My offsider chased him around the streets while i called the police. Charges are now being pressed. Result.
  2. Treemotion I like for nearly all of my work but I have to say that I prefer the Skylotec if I'm lugging a bigger saw around the tree. Just seems to hold up better and doesn't pull so much.
  3. Could it possibly be a touch of arfur?
  4. Really? Why would you spend all that cash on a LJ or SJ and then leave it in your bag except for rescues? seems a complete waste of money to me. That's like buying a treemotion but using a Treescape harness everyday.
  5. Looks like a really useful website. Can see me spending far too long on it the Facebook page didn't see to work properly though.
  6. You can get some lubricating stuff that you spray the back of your throat with but don't know how good it is. Loosing weight, stopping smokingetc can help and if all else fails buy the wife a white noise machine and a set of ear plugs.
  7. My offsider found this wee fella today. Fairly reasonable specimen I'd say.
  8. Flattened a heap of trees and and a few houses. Some of my mates are on tree crews up there. They got a stop work so rescue workers could hear any cries for help.
  9. Two tornados, one in Auckland the other in Rotorua. Three people dead, utter carnage in some places.

I've also heard the same story as Drew. There was a thread in here recently about double checking before releasing your lines. This goes to show you should double check nearly everything. Let's learn something from this. Condolences to friends and family. Another tragedy in the industry.
  11. Some most excellent photos there. An old fella I worked with when I first started out had a Matador. Loved em ever since.
  12. Hmmmmm connie hedges Priced up a Macrocarpa hedge once (previously topped several times) but didn't bother getting up close and personal. Bad mistake. The hedge was heavily tangled, had grown together most of the way along and was full of bottles, stones and all sorts of other rubbish. By the third day I'd had enough of dismantling and decided to fell one of the trees and deal to it on the floor. Tree one was tangled in tree two and got dragged the wrong way flattening a galvanised steel lamppost on its way down. Replacement cost of the lamppost was half the price of the job. The last connie hedge removal I did I brought in a digger and let that deal to them.
  13. They'd have to sort those colours out before I'd think about trying one and I still couldn't justify the price. And at least I can hide most of my boots under my trousers or several layers of dirt
  14. Drew, I don't think it'll fit Mason's head bro :lol:he struggles finding baseball caps to fit. Anyway, budget is earmarked for a few other things come February. If I bought one of these I'd probably be laughing stock of Taupo. Can you see yourself turning up at Asplundh wearing one of these? Hmmmmm maybe I should get Mason one
  15. Don't think I could justify the expense when the Petzyls do a perfectly good job. 180 quid is an awful lot for a lid (yep, I get that it's your head) and are they that much better than a vertex? Even if they are they might want to tone down the garishness a little. As far as ground helmets go; I couldn't go back to wearing one. Cheap head harness makes them uncomfortable and forever wobbling around on my head. The ones we had came without a chin strap or with this horrible cheap bit of elastic that hooked on to the helmet. Not only did they fall off every time I knocked it climbing a tree but also every time I looked up when checking on the climber. And good boots are a must. It's not just about protecting your toes but also about long term problems associated with your feet, posture etc. ever seen what high heels do to women's feet, ankles and back?
  16. Got to say I don't know many people who climb on mechanicals. In fact I think I only know one off the top of my head. I am keen to see how the zigzag measures up out in the field against the other mechanicals. The price is good but will it be enough to get me to change from the SJ or is it yet another piece of tree bling.
  17. Yeah right (as the Tui ad goes). Even if it is I'll be sick of waiting for it and will have gone with Stihl seeing as they already have a damn good saw up and running.
  18. Annoys the hell out of me to see a football player rolling around the floor in apparent agony after a slight knock from the opposing player and then watching rugby players smash the living daylights out of each other for 80 minutes and somehow nearly always managing to pull themselves off the deck and carry on playing. Ditto league. The prima donna attitudes in football have turned me right off the game, the world cup is now one of the worst for it. Cudos to England for the win, apparently it was fantastic match. Now they just need to keep it up for more than one game
  19. Shoulda stppoed at kerosene creek on the way back for a soak under the hot waterfall.
  20. gotta love the Ozzies
  21. Glad to hear our useless immigration department finally sorted out a residents visa and you're adding to the expat fraternity in the land of the long white cloud. Now, enough with the niceties, it's your shout when you get here
  22. I get; oh you're an arbatrist. We love trees we do but there's one on the berm that's to big and drops leaves, can you take it down? Or; every time we come to lift a tree for footpath clearance we get, cut it off at ground level followed by laughter. Why people think we would think this is funny is beyond me. I think the most common one is; we're tree lovers, we planted all of these copper beech/oak/sorbus/Totara/etc because we love trees so much, now, can you just cut that copper beech/oak/sorbus/Totara/etc in half so we can have our view back.
  23. I currently work for council (as well as running my own business) and this statement is pretty much bang on the nail. I'll add that there seems to be a feet under the table mentality. Many people not capable of doing the job but have their feet firmly ensconced under the table with no chance of them being moved on because it's in the too hard basket or the people above them are also feet under the table employees.
  24. I hate to say it but some of the young fellas I've met just starting out in the industry aren't what you'd call the sharpest tools in the shed.
  25. And unfortunately, H&S now dictates that you need the tickets to do the job. OSH came out recently and said that you are 7 times a likely to die in the industry in NZ as you are in the UK or Europe. There's a big push now to straighten the industry out and I'd imagine its going to get even bigger with stats like that. Turangi (my home town) is a big forestry town and most of the contractors I know won't even look at you without both tickets AND experience unless you want to work for pocket change. A guy dies last week when a tree fell on him. I think that's 30 odd for the year. Probably best to ring some of the bigger logging companies and get the info from them.
