  1. Yes it is sickening and a regular occurrence. The last tree poisoned was a protected cypress on a council berm. Drilled and poisoned and when this didn't kill it the tree was set on fire. We were tempted to leave it in situ just to make a point but it had to come out in the end. Replant? Not on your nelly. The culprits will rip them out at the root and anyway, why waste the money on these pillocks. As you can probably tell, I haven't calmed down any.
  2. Yep, get em on Doug Fir in NZ. Only the younger ones though. I wash most of my climbing gear the same as has been posted. Warm temp, no spin and just a little washing powder. Cleans up ropes nicely. Another good way is to let them drag in a fast flowing stream if all else fails. Not sure about metal gear and flip lines. I even had my SJ clog up after doing one ugly Doug Fir.
  3. See if someone close by can let you have a fly on one before you buy it. Had a chat with a supplier the other day who told me some people love it but others just can't get to grips with it. Personally I love mine.
  4. Timber, how deep do the holes need to be? I'm presuming into the soil not drilling the roots. MS200, I'll start dealing to the drill holes Monday as I can't get there before then. Thanks both for the tips.
  5. So the sugar thingy; even if the foliage has browned this might actually work? We were considering leaving the trees to see if we can get them to throw out a heap of epicormic growth over the next year but if the sugar trick works it might be worth a shot.
  6. Be interesting to see how it compares to the SJ.
  7. The police were called when the Pine was first done but they didn't seem that interested. Unfortunately, the Council are not keen on rattling too many cages either so it's been passed on to local media to see if they want to run a story on it. Spineless springs to mind which makes it all the more annoying.
  8. Seriously peeved today to say the least. We got called by one of our guys that mows and maintains the reserves (council employee). He'd spotted these Gums and on further inspection found drill holes around the base of all of them. It's been done in the last couple of weeks and the foliage on two of the three has already browned off. The third is sure to be close behind. The trees are approximately 30m tall and in the fall zone of an 11KV conductor. We're not sure if it's one of the residents whose property is shaded by the trees or one from further up the hill whose view is blocked. Whichever, I'm not impressed. The last picture is, or was, a weeping Pine that the locals didn't like so drilled, poisoned and then systematically dismantled. They had the firewood and burned the rest on site. It looks like the trees will have to come down unless anyone can indicate otherwise
  9. Wire rope for tree work. The first lot we had on our chipper was synthetic and it lasted less than three hours working time. It got roughed up really bad just winching limbs up a bank to the chipper. The whole lot snapped in half on the third job. Turns out it hadn't been wrapped on the drum under tension and the last 15m that HAD been spooled on under tension(because we were using that 15m) bit in and melted to the loose stuff. When we unwrapped the lot the last two wraps had melted themselves on to the drum. I'm sure it's good stuff but I doubt it'll last with the rigours of tree work.
  10. I was told not to tow full stop. That was on the turbo diesel auto. Also blew the gearbox in it. Mitsi tritons exactly the same.
  11. Toyota Surfs blow head gaskets like there's no tomorrow, especially when towing wouldn't touch one again with a barge pole.
  12. Cuddly, how polite. I'll have to remember that description for myself. I had a pair of the progress and they are a nice trou for the more " cuddly" amongst us. Pretty hard wearing too. Certainly not as flimsy as the HiFlex. I've just bought a pair of SiP 6.1's and they're just as comfy but a whole lot warmer than the progress. Can't comment on the stretch airs as I haven't tried them yet.
  13. No doubt they'll attempt to re -wire their house next.
  14. Sounds like ill be giving the Zermatts a crack when my current pair of Meindles give up the ghost in 3 years time.
  15. What a primo gift. How's the pronunciation going with them silky?
  16. Is this the best one yet?
  17. Smells like a mix of farts and puke to be honest. Smells worse going through the chipper.
  18. Hard as nails and very hot. Smells a bit funky but as long as it isn't full of borer it burns beautifully.
  19. But the shops have already started with the Christmas push. Seems to get earlier every year. Anyone remember the days when the shops shut midday Christmas Eve and didn't open again until after new year's?
  20. Not a Christmas fan I'm afraid. Find it a bit hypocritical to be honest and having been raised in England it seems even less like Christmas when you're sitting in 30 degree heat and having a BBQ for Xmas lunch. The tree and lights go up to keep the Mrs happy.
  21. Cheers Ewan, I watched it just so that you hadn't wasted five seconds of video and god knows how long uploading it sometimes it pays to just stop and look eh but then if I hadn't asked I'd probably still be cursing
  22. Joe, is there still illegal logging going on in Tazzy? I'm sure I watched a doco sometime ago that said some of these magnificent trees were being felled on a regular basis. I note that the Guinness book of records has a Eucalyptus as one of the tallest trees ever measured. Something like 424 feet for one that fell over.
  23. Ok so I had a look this morning and sure enough there is a pocket and yep, you can get the rope in once the pin is in the pocket. Should probably look better next time eh would still be nice to have the push button though.
  24. I haven't noticed one but ill check tomorrow.
