  1. Don't dwell on it, I'm pretty sure we've all done it and I know I have on several occasions. It's part of the learning process.
  2. Funnily enough I just came straight from that thread. Reminds me of being asked to peer review a tree report put in to Council for the removal of a Lombardy pop with notable status. The applicant wanted to remove the tree for an upgrade of the area (Department of internal affairs). The report, from an arborist, was one paragraph long stating the tree had an inclusion and was dangerous. I declined the report on the basis there was nothing wrong with the tree, there was no inclusion and it didn't represent any more a hazard than any other tree in the district. ONE PARAGRAPH for a protected tree!!!! The applicant still hasn't forgiven me but the tree still stands.
  3. What he said. Straight past all that rubbish and into clear wood. As for the comment from someone else on "no rope"; dumb comment!
  4. Have the same problem here with Douglas Firs. Gets to the point where mechanical or rope hitches just don't work. We've taken to using a length of Cobra bracing sheath over the top of lanyards to stop gunking and they work well.
  5. When you say 7 tonne are we talking pay load, GVM etc? Just trying to figure weight differences between the UK and NZ.
  6. Bandits are awesome machines. Would have one myself if I could but not sure about towing one on the back of a tranny or van. They need something bigger if you're going to be traveling any distance.
  7. Awesome, thanks guys. Intend to finish up the trip with a week in Vancouver so that base is covered. Looks like Jasper etc will win over Montana and Wyoming.
  8. I have an Asplundh check and duck and it'll clear the front of the truck by 15-20 feet.
  9. It's not Oak as in Quercus. Many people seem to be allergic to the fine hairs, saw dust and sometimes the sap so check first.
  10. Alrighty then good folks of AT. Looking at planning my next big trip to the US but have a curve ball just thrown in. I had planned to fly from NYC to Minneapolis and pick up a car, drive Wyoming and Montana (mainly Glacier National Park) and then head to Seattle but.............someone suggested that Jasper and Banff might be more spectacular, less packed and nicer driving so I'm also considering a round trip drive from Vancouver. Has anyone done either of these areas and if so, give their thoughts. Ta.
  11. I had one of the older versions, the boss has a newer one. Surprisingly good little truck for the money. Very much a lightweight but drives more like a car than a ute.
  12. Mario, can I ask what you are able to do should you fund the culprit behind this?
  13. Ted, wondering if your Silk Oak is the same as our Silky Oak or Grevillea?
  14. Nice shot Adam.
  15. Cabin looks like paradise. Can imagine going to sleep and waking up to the sound of the ocean with the embers in the fire still glowing.
  16. Summer here in NZ but haven't managed to get a swim in the lake yet unfortunately. Maybe this weekend.
  17. Looks an absolutely primo spot.
  18. Pretty much the same so I think you can drive this on a class one (car licence) if it's empty but need a class 2, which I think is up to about 13.5 tonne, if it's loaded or towing. Then you get into class 4 and 5. I have a class 2 so I'm OK. It's a big chunk of machinery and I'm still sweating the amount I'm spending on it but it should hold its value so if it doesn't work out for me I can sell it. My little truck has done me proud but it's about time I stopped asking so much of it.
  19. Just upgraded after I finally realised (after 8 years) my little Isuzu was struggling with the size of the chipper. This is pre bin build and I'm hoping to get that organised in the next few days. She's an oldy but pulls strong and good. Drove 40kms today all in sixth gear and didn't need to change down once. Pulls from 20kph in top. 5 tonne payload, 6.9 litre normally aspirated diesel.
  20. We stayed in Brookings, right on the beach in a Best Western and then a couple of nights in Arcata I think it was. Probably not the closest places to the Redwoods but plenty suitable for out needs and very reasonably priced for the quality of the hotels. The entire trip from Seattle to SF was outstanding and one of the finest drives I've done. Dropped into Eureka for a feed when we stopped at Arcata and found it to be quite a quaint little place. Lots of homeless but mostly harmless and minding themselves. Also found the locals at the restaurant to be a thoroughly friendly lot. Anyone doing the drive; I can highly recommend the Shearwater inn, Newport. Best nights sleep I had in the entire 5 and 1/2 week trip. Much further north mind.
  21. 185Hp Ty. Couldn't afford a new one unfortunately (Everything in NZ is darn expensive). Anything new I could afford was too small in regard to the chip box I could build. Not much bigger than what I already have to be honest so I had to go older and bigger. Aiming for about 10 cube compared to the 3 cube in my current truck.
  22. Well, ended up with a 6.9l Nissan Diesel 5 Tonner. 6 speed so it sits comfy on 90kph without feeling like you have to have your foot to the boards. Should pull my chipper nice and easy. Will post photos up in the other truck thread once I have the back built up.
  23. Was the strider the one with the back pedal brake? Had a couple of choppers myself before progressing to Dawes.
  24. You know, I actually quite like the thought of that. If some people cared half as much we might still have a lot more trees left in the world.
