  1. I like the sound of that. If you want to hop over the border for the shopping you can at least make a day trip out of it. I also like the idea of the bigger shops shutting on a Sunday. Be a pain for a while until you got yourself organised.
  2. Don't know any Pitto that grows to 2-3' through. Pittosporum eugenoides is one of the bigger species but generally tends to multi stem not far from the base.
  3. Here's some advice from a 45 year old. QUIT while your ahead Seriously though, when I first started out I worked with a guy who was in his early to mid 60s. Awesome awesome dood, started with axe and cross cut and taught me a whole lot about how to work methodically and safely. Be an interesting thread to follow will this one.
  4. There's a guy here in Taupo who did just that. Bought a spider lift brand new. Now selling his tree business as the spider lift hire is more profitable. Granted, it's a completely different country. People are hiring it for Christmas decoration installations, tree work, painting; all sorts.
  5. I'm old fashioned and not particularly keen on 24/7 opening. Sometimes it's nice on a Sunday just to window shop through closed doors. Even on Christmas Eve here shops are open until midnight. The almighty dollar.
  6. Even doing nothing is hard work. 28 degrees in the shade and high humidity. I can't even be faffed to go for a swim in the lake.
  7. Hot, sticky and energy sapping. Can't wait for either rain or at least a cooling off.
  8. With the drop down sides already on the truck when I bought it, it seemed the cheapest solution along with not wasting any of that "middle" space you get with traditional style cabinets. The bit you can never seem to reach.
  9. Nice bro, some decent sized Robinias. Where is it?
  10. The finished build on the truck. Spray painted and sealed. Just need to give the inside of the bin a coat of rustproofing and get the sign writing done. First working run tomorrow.
  11. It seems I have both tennis and golf elbow the advice about dropping starting maybe good though. Not good practice for sure and I do find it can aggravate mine.
  12. I have an image resizer. I take hundreds of photos so can't be bothered changing my camera's file size for the odd one or two. I shift click on the photos I want to resize, chose the size I want them and then click OK. Works perfectly. Usually I'm downsizing for emailing. Happy to let you know what I use if I can figure it out but it was a freebie I found on the web.
  13. Got it myself. Got a strap for my arm which helps but regular massage of the tendons really helped heaps. Plenty of YouTube vids on how.
  14. I'm dealing with this on a regular basis. Trees hacked, felled or poisoned. now one of the Councillors has taken it a step further with getting it in to the media so hopefully we'll get a bit of publicity around it. Shipping containers would be awesome but it's never going to happen unfortunately. Well, not unless I'm the CEO!
  15. Thanks mate. Just trying to compare with NZ licence classes and weights. For example I have a class 2 and can drive up to but not more than 18000kg GLW or a gross combination weight of 12000kg. Then you get on to class 4 and 5 which are the heavy rigid and heavy combination. UK sounds confusing to me.
  16. Would someone explain to me the weight classes please? When you talk about, say, a 14 tonner are you talking about gross vehicle mass, payload etc? I've just upgraded from my little truck to something more substantial but not on this scale. It seems the older gear is (hopefully) bullet proof as there little in the way of electronics and turbos to go wrong.
  17. Took a young colleague out to see a Redwood in Taupo recently. Measured at around 100 feet with a half decent girth. He marvelled at the sheer size.........then I showed him the photos I took in the forests over there and his jaw dropped. I still have very fond memories of lying on my back looking up through the trees and just being overwhelmed by the immensity of them.
  18. 'Selfish vandals' hack up trees to protect Lake Taupo views 'Selfish vandals' hack up trees to protect Lake Taupo views | Stuff.co.nz Seems to be an ever more regular occurrence around these parts. I'm losing count of the number of trees I have to deal with that are poisoned, hacked at, snapped off, topped etc and pretty much all for views.
  19. You want expensive? Try living in New Zealand!
  20. Having worked for a very large firm I can tell you that, with contract work, large portions of time can be written of to those contracts so that private work can be quoted cheaper e.g. You price a private job for a couple of hours knowing full well you're going to be there at least six. The remaining hours/time that you work over are written off to a large contract where it will be "lost".
  21. 1994 Nissan Condor Diesel, 4 tonne. 6.9l 6 cylinder. And I'm hoping it is built like a tank.
  22. Progress at last on the truck build. Opted for a smaller back which will give me somewhere between 7.5 and 9 cube depending on final measurements. I had the back built to the size the steel sheet came in which saves on costs.
  23. Definitely a nice looking rig Ty. I'm used to slightly bigger stuff here but that looks pretty good to me.
  24. New Zealand pure it definitely is not. Commercialism at its finest, now seen with the removal of tree protection in order to make land development easier. We already had GE corn so forestry is conceivably not that much more of a step. I seem to remember hearing something about it in the not to distant past but that could be my half pie memory.
  25. I went the other way. From full time self employed to council work running my own business on the side. Going full time is incredibly fulfilling; way more so than banging your head against the wall for council. Just make sure you have done your homework first. Have you enough work? Enough to cover holidays, sick time etc. make sure you have your budgets sorted. Running a part time business with a full time job paying a steady wage is way different to doing it all on your own. At the end of the day, you'll know if it's right. Personally speaking, if you have the work or the right business ethic, I'd go for it. You'll never know if you don't try.
